America Lost | Trailer
AMERICA LOST explores America’s “forgotten cities” - Youngstown, OH, Memphis, TN and Stockton, CA. Through a series of stories, the film shows the dramatic decline of once prosperous communities. The film sheds light on how crumbling economic and social institutions have created a gap between the haves and have nots while also offering hope for rebuilding America’s “forgotten” from the bottom up.
- I hate to say it,
the neighborhood I grew up in, which was once beautiful,
it's a ghetto now.
Seems like poverty is kind of like a really mean disease,
it just kind of slowly creeps
and consumes and it's just spreading.
- Everybody has a story.
It could be through drugs.
It could be through abuse.
It could be through violence
and our families are broken down.
Our communities are broken down.
People's lives are broken down. They're devastated.
- This is the story of three forgotten American cities.
I spent five years exploring this lost American interior.
I thought I'd be telling an economic story
but over time I discovered there's a deeper human crisis.
- My dad is in jail in Texas right now.
And he's been there for about two years.
Somebody that you really love goes away,
it's like a piece of your heart missing.
- Man, it really hit home for me.
You know what I'm saying?
I tell people all the time.
My momma raised three boys.
Both of my brothers were killed.
My brothers were my friends.
- If I didn't have a family, I wouldn't be alive right now.
The only thing that keeps my heart beating
the only thing that keeps my old heart
from giving up on me is knowing
that I have a reason why,
to keep breathing in and out and moving forward.
- Bring peace to this neighborhood.
Bring salvation to this neighborhood.
- Change starts with us.
If we can affect a person,
we can affect the community.
We can affect the city.
We can affect the world.
