And in fact, you're not known for drums,

you're known for your feet.

- Yeah, known as a dancer, mostly, tap dancer.

FOLDS: Yeah, and you play drums on the floor with your feet,

which I think is astounding.

I love what you play.

And so I've gotten out my old drum recently,

because I used to play drums,

and then I switched to piano. - Hmm.

FOLDS: And I thought that maybe

we'd do a Christmas song together.

Can you guess what that is?

- I really like "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen."

FOLDS: No, wasn't planning on doing that.

- Oh, okay.

FOLDS: So maybe something with a musical instrument in it.

- Oh, yeah, "Jingle Bells" is a classic.

FOLDS: No, no, no, no, check this out.

FOLDS: Tonight, me, a rock and roll guy,

will perform with classical violinist Aisslinn Nosky,

the concertmaster of the Handel and Haydn Society.

So, we were talking about your violin backstage,

and tell people about this.

It's really old, but it's, it's...

You've strung it specially for this show.

- That's right, this instrument, this violin was made in 1746,

and it's the way that a violin would have looked and sounded

to the audiences and composers of the 18th century.

So I think the main difference that affects the tone

is that the strings are made of natural gut--

in this case, sheep intestine--

and that gives it a different tone.

Most violins now are strung with metal strings,

different kinds of synthetics.

FOLDS: And they're louder now.

- I think they tend to be,

but I think there's also a difference in color.

FOLDS: Right.

- It's not so much that I'm softer,

it might be that I'm a little, maybe more shimmery,

there's some kind of delicacy to the sound.

FOLDS: Well, I'm, I'm a basher, so...

(Nosky laughs)

So if you want to play "Silent Night."

- Sure, let's find some common ground.

FOLDS: I'll follow along and I promise I won't cover you up.
