And welcome to our presentation
of "Theater Close-Up,"
Thirteen's primetime spotlight
on the innovative and
provocative theater happening
off Broadway.
Tonight's play is "Old Hats"
from Signature Theatre, starring
Bill Irwin and David Shiner in a
bravura showcase of their
contemporary vaudevillian
comedy.
Although popular comedy grows
noisier by the decade, Irwin and
Shiner have created a unique
niche inspired by the slapstick
style of the great silent-movie
clowns.
Yet, far from being a nostalgia
act, Irwin and Shiner
reinterpret their classic
techniques with a modern
sensibility to lampoon all the
human foibles that never seem to
change.
Critically acclaimed as one of
the funniest shows on New York
stages of the past few years,
the production reunites the
clowns with their longtime
director, Tina Landau, and
introduces Shaina Taub as their
new band leader and all-around
comic foil.
Using music, technology,
movement, and antic
improvisation, Irwin and Shiner
work their comic magic to create
an unforgettable outing that's
side-splitting fun for the whole
family.
