[ Applause ]

Good evening, New York!

[ Applause ]

Thank you! Oh, thank you so much.

I have to catch my breath.

Have you guys seen the view?

[ Laughter ]

This is unbelievable!

I'm probably -- I hope I don't annoy you tonight,

because all I can think about is the 12-year-old girl

with a hairbrush in her hand,

in front of her bedroom mirror.

And in a way, that sets up this evening very well,

because it ends up being a retrospective about why

I'm actually standing here in front of you all tonight.

It's -- I love to sing,

and in order to sing, you need a good song.

Those of you -- anybody in here

who has ever taken a voice lesson?

[ Scattered applause ]

Yeah?

Oh, see, there's a few.

I was in Minnesota the other night,

and the whole audience went "Waa!"

Minnesota.

You know, those of you who have not had the pleasure --

and by that I mean terror --

of taking your first voice lesson,

I just want to fill you in a little bit

of what it's like.

Of course, you know that you're Maria Callas

or Luciano Pavarotti, you know this.

That's why you're in the voice lesson,

just to improve a little bit.

[ Laughter ]

And you go in, and your voice teacher,

usually a very kind person,

hands you a worn-down, battered, stained, torn,

hanging-by-the-spine copy of the "24 Italian Art Songs."

And the big question is,

is it the high key or the medium key?

Medium, okay. It's fine. That's fine.

Medium key -- I can deal with that.

And we go home and we practice

and we come back for our first lesson.

And it goes something like this.

[ Singing tentatively ]

♪ Caro mio ben

♪ Credimi almen

♪ Senza di ti

♪ Languishe il core

And it goes downhill from there.

How anybody comes back for a second lesson,

I'll never understand.

But somehow we do.

This has been turned on its head a little bit for me.

Of course, over the years, we work very hard

to learn how to master those songs.

But at the same time we end up hating them just a little bit.

[ Laughter ]

Because they're that hard, and we want them to sound

so much better than they actually do at the start.

Enter Craig Terry.

About five years ago, I was backstage

at the Chicago Lyric Opera, and he said,

"Joyce, I have this crazy idea.

Can I play something for you?

Because I think these songs,

we've forgotten how beautiful they actually are."

So that's what we're going to do for you tonight.

Would you please welcome the wonderful

and imaginative and extraordinary Craig Terry?

[ Applause ]

This intro still makes me nervous.

That's true.

It's also fitting that we bring this concert here to Manhattan

because it is possible that there was a Manhattan or two

involved in the development of this idea.

[ Laughter ]

I won't tell a lie.

And as Craig and I were exploring this, I said,

"You know, Craig, if we're going to do this,

we should actually really do this.

This is the reason we can welcome to the stage

the legendary Chuck Israels on bass.

Mr. Israels.

There are two things that have been affirmed in my mind

as we've worked on this project.

The first is, we've been essentially singing

the same song for about 400 years.

"I want more love.

How can I get more love?

I don't have enough love."

So it's the same song.

What's beautiful about this conglomeration tonight,

this fusion, is it puts to use

what I've been learning in my baroque world

for the past, well, couple decades.

When I first worked with William Christie,

he said, "Joyce," he goes, "baroque is like jazz.

You've got to bring all the kaleidoscope

of colors that you have within you."

Because we're given, in this music that's 400 years old,

a figured bass line,

and we're all expected to improvise.

It's the same as the world of jazz.

So we're going to put that to the test

a little bit more tonight by bringing in

two other extraordinary, legendary players

that you are going to grow to love, I promise you.

Jimmy Madison on the drums

and Charlie Porter on the trumpet.
