Midway Felix, rapper.

Josh, guitar.

dVRG, keyboard.

Twinkie Jiggles, Bass

Peter, drummer

Muad'dib, singer, vocal percussionist.

(Twinkie Jiggles) Heiruspecs is...

(Midway Felix) Heiruspecs is dope live instruments.

A live hip hop group.

My main love.

St. Paul.

(Midway Felix) Heiruspecs started in,

around 1997 at Central High School

sorta between myself and Sean,

originally in a recording class

in the basement of the school, jamming a lot.

We started performing and we didn't really have a name,

so as we put together our first few shows,

the flyers just said "Live hip hop."

At one point I told Sean, I'm not going to make another flyer

if we don't have a name, and this was sort of in passing

between classes in the hallway, and he'd just come from

a Latin class and he was like, I like the word "haruspex."

I'm like, "Hei--Heiruspecs," okay, cool!

I didn't know how to spell it, I didn't go to Latin class,

I don't know what it is, so I just wrote it out

the way that made sense to me, which is horribly wrong.

(Josh) Sean and Felix and I were in the Recording Arts Program

at St. Paul Central High School.

It was run by Red Freeberg, which was you know, sort of

part music theory, but it was really a lot more beyond that

about the music business and how to, you know,

live and function as a working musician, which

I think was like invaluable for us as we grew as a band.

(Sean) When you got to get a show out of the high school, so you

could put your poster up on the brick wall in Red's program,

it was the source of pride of going, yep, I did something

good enough that they'll let me do it not in this building.

(Felix) Who could have more flyers on the wall became a contest.

That was one of the ways that Red taught hustle.

If you could put your flyer on the wall,

he'd make a point to call it out in class and be like so-and-so's

got a flyer up here, why are the rest of you guys sleeping?

Get on the wall, beat that guy, you know?

(Peter) It's absolutely the case, this group wouldn't exist

if Red Freeberg, didn't have the recording program.

And I don't know if it was even maybe a joke at first

when we talked about, what if we started a scholarship?

I don't know that any of us really thought that it was

actually going to be something that would stick around

as an idea that we all would end up getting behind

on such a, a, a kind of a deep level.

I think now we can't envision kind of not doing that.

It's always just really rewarding

to get all of these applications

and just read these young people's stories

because we see a lot of ourselves, and we relate

to a lot of the things that we read about.

(dVRG) Where we came from is important to us,

so we want to support things that are going to continue

to come out of that, that, that melting pot that created us.

(Felix) The hardest part of it for me is deciding who gets

the scholarships at the end of the year, that's the hard part.

The money doesn't seem like the hard part.

Money's a reality, at some point we do actually

have to put the money in the bank in order to do that,

but like it's, that doesn't seem like a hard part.

Alright, so "Everybody out there's calling Felix a jerk

so what doesn't make you wince now could only make you better,

we'd all be better swimmers if the earth was really wetter."

That line just came from, at the time there was some people

writing some not super awesome press about my lyrical prowess,

so at that time, I really just felt like, you know what man,

just let it roll off; at least

they're talking about me; I'll take it.

But that's the thing about art, right?

Art is always subjective, so if there aren't critics

saying good things and bad things, then you as an artist

at some point are probably going to stop and scratch your head

and think, what am I doing wrong?

Is this not art, did I just make an appliance?

Did I stop making art? Like, you know, what was it?

You know, it's good to have those critics, good or bad.

It helps check you as an artist and lets you know where you are,

if you need to, if you need to recalibrate for your audience.

Sometimes that's appropriate,

or if you need to go further away, get weirder.

I think the way that we approach creating these hip hop beats

is really by kind of thinking of and emulating a lot of the

different production that we're really, I think, inspired by.

(Felix) Early on in Heiruspecs there was a part of our recording process

and our writing process, which I feel like we really wanted it

to emulate this sort of sound of that period,

which really came a lot from the type of samplers that were used,

which were primarily old samplers

that got that like digital crunch.

And we would try to do that with the band, which sounds clean,

'cause here you've got this bass, and it's going through a nice amp,

and you got nice pedals and you've got drums, they're naked,

you know, it's like we intentionally tried to make it sound like sonically not good

in many cases, and I think it's because

we wanted to bring that sound to our band.

(Josh) When I play guitar,

I often try to not sound like a guitar player whenever I can.

My whole approach is like trying to figure out

what space needs to be filled and fill it in a tasteful way,

sort of in more kind of textural or kind of ambient sense.

And so that often ends up trying to do things

that don't necessarily sound like guitars.

(dVRG) It's a balance between trying to find a texture

or a rhythmic idea, or some,

some little kernel that is maybe reminiscent of a sample.

That sounds like some, something, that a producer

would have pulled from a record because he wanted

just that one chord played on this type of instrument

to accentuate everything else that's going on.

There are sort of 10 relatively crappy songs

that you have to make the first time a live band

meets a new set of rappers, where they're like, well, yeah,

do so some hard rock stuff, I wanna do hard rock at the end.

So then you get your song that has hard rock at the end.

Then they're like, oh let's do like one jazzy

'cause we never get the jazzy sample.

It's like play right cymbal. I'm like,

do you play upright bass? That also sucks.

And it's like, we did all these.

You get through those 10 songs, what do you write after that?

When it's not just exciting 'cause it's rap, it's not just

a novelty 'cause it's a band-- what's after that?

I'm really proud of what we've done since that.
