Sean... [Sean laughs] we're here in St. Paul. (Sean) We are.

It's a place called the Camp Bar.

This place is campy, and I love it.

There's a, there's a lot goin' on here.

(Dessa, laughing) There's not that much goin' on.

Well not now, in the walls, in the walls yeah,

I mean later probably, yeah.

You grew up in Owatonna.

Yes, Owatonna, Minnesota,

from like the age 9 to 15 I was there.

I went to the Perpich Center for Arts Education,

it was called Minnesota Center for Arts Education then.

And that's what we all called the Arts School.

Yeah Arts High School, yeah.

So I left when I was 15,

kind of like never moved back to Owatonna

'cause I was already in bands up here and just stuck around.

You started out in a lot of noise bands. (Sean) Yeah.

And am I safe to call your most recent project R & B?

I'd say soul, R&B, yeah.

Okay. How does that change happen?

I don't know, I guess I just had like a lot of energy to burn

in the first bands. You know what I mean?

So I just wanted to scream and run around

and that's what Calvin Krime, my first band was like.

[playing hard rock]

When did you pick up Har Mar Superstar, the moniker.

It was a while ago, probably like 1999.

And everybody wants to hear you say out loud,

yes, it is referencing the mall.

Yeah, oh definitely. Would you just say it?

Yes, Har Mar's named after the mall.

I was working at the State Board of Education,

proofreading like laws and weird documents across the street,

so on my lunch breaks I'd go there

and sort of write lyrics and...

Kick it at the food court or something.

Kick it at the food court, A&W, yeah.

How long did it take to create the Har Mar persona and how

different or not different is it from you in real life?

Well it started out as a really fantastic version

of me, you know what I mean?

Like me being able to get away with things

that I didn't feel like I could at the time.

[laughs] This is a diary of Har Mar Superstar.

What's up everybody?

You think you know, but you have no idea.

(Dessa) Did you like invent a dude and then become that dude?

(Sean) Sort of, yeah.

But like, the dude I became was like less of a jerk.

that I kind of was going for at first.

Thank you.

Thank you so much, you guys are the best!

[loud applause & cheers]

(Dessa) So when did you first start getting naked onstage?

I guess the first time I did it was more of a shock thing

then it was like, it became practical when I was on tour a lot.

What does that mean?

Because I had so many like outfits made

specifically for tours; I didn't want to like, destroy them

'cause I was rolling around on the ground and getting sweaty,

and I only had two options or whatever.

So it really was like a practical thing.

As it was, I got like an extra month out of this outfit.

Reasonable, measured, careful, thing I could do,

was to get into my underwear.

Exactly! [laughs]

There were periods where I'd stop just 'cause like

people were expecting it, and like with "Bye Bye 17,"

it's like, doesn't make as much sense to be singing some

of these like more melancholy songs like in my underwear,

like looking like a giant toddler-- you know what I mean?

Do you-- so many critics lost their minds over "Bye Bye 17"

and a lot of people used words like "tender," "earnest," "genuine."

Like, do you agree that there's a progression on that record

that's a more earnest approach.

Oh yeah, I was definitely like, I was definitely more of a moody

like record, I wrote like definitely with the intent

of like getting back to like seasons,

after being in LA for like 8 years.

And I was in New York, and it was wintertime

and I just definitely let the emotions of that

play into like the writing of the songs.

Did that freak you out? Was that scary to...?

Yeah, it was, it was definitely, like,

a lot of people were like

advising against it. Really.

Oh you know what I mean? A lot of people were like you sure you wanna do that?

It was like yeah, I think it's time.

Like at this time in my life, I've finally like

had enough life experience

to like sing the painful songs like the older soul singers.

(Sean) Yes, you guys are the best, thank you.

[cheers, applause, & whistles]

(Dessa) How much of it is a joke?

It kind of was always,

I felt like Har Mar was like riding the line, at first

definitely the lyrics were more like tongue-in-cheek.

I was always like, a little like put back

when people would take it as a full-on joke,

because I'd write the songs and I don't think they're anything,

like if you heard like R. Kelly or Justin Timberlake

singing any of these songs and the lyrics I'm singing,

people would take it fully seriously.

Just the fact that I look kind of like weird.

[laughs] It's amazing. You know what I mean like?

So I can deal with that.

Like it's like, it just depends on my mood that day,

you know what I mean, like, and now the records I think are

just more sort of straight up, like I'm just makin' stuff.

Like is dancing a serious part of like the thing that you love

as a performer, or is it sort of tongue in cheek?

I think it's like, I mean it's huge when you see somebody

pull off a crazy move, or if you see a little choreographed bit

in the middle of a show that you don't expect,

like that's like huge, and people love it

and freak out, so like, it's all part of the show. You know what I mean?

Like early on was there a point where you made a definitive

decision like I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna own this?

Yeah, I guess like it was, it was just with Har Mar it was

the first time I was onstage without holding an instrument.

And I'd go out there, and I realized I was just holding

a microphone and it felt boring, you know what I mean,

to just be like standing there.

so I had to learn immediately

how to turn it on bigger, just to like be like yeah,

this is like a show, we're not like, you know,

watching me like shoegaze here like singing R&B songs,

it can't just be like, you can't, you can't do that meekly.

So you know what I mean, but like it's like I need to turn it on.

(Dessa) Do you have like a favorite moment as an, as an actor?

(Sean) Um, man, it's hard to say

'cause I've landed in a few awesome films, movies.

Drop, name drop, name drop.

Okay "Starsky and Hutch" was really fun,

'cause I got to do a huge dance-off with Ben Stiller.

Watch it man! Scuse me?

I said watch it, the floor's made for dancin',

you can tell by the lights.

(Sean) I guess that probably felt like the most surreal because

it's first off like the biggest thing I've ever done still,

like as far as a production goes

and like how far that movie has reached.

I like, I had to like take dance lessons with Ben Stiller,

like we went into a studio and figured out our routines.

And like the shoot was like three days of like

doing that thing over and over and over again,

for like 12 hours a day like it was a big-ass scene.

You know, a lot of people use the word sex symbol,

you redefine a sexy role. True or false?

Yeah, sure I think it's hilarious,

I think it's awesome, why not? I'll take that.

Do you ever confuse people at your stage show,

like do you ever look at somebody in the audience and

see that they are totally unsure of what they're lookin' at?

Yeah, yeah, I love that; that's like one of my favorite things,

'cause like, I mean I have like, you know, I have a gut

and I'm like going bald, and people like normally

would just like kind of like write that off,

but the fact that you can like go onstage

and make a whole crowd feel like involved or like part of it

or like you can like instill confidence in like

other guys like that in the crowd and like make them

sexy with their girlfriends or whatever, I love that part.

Do women expect you to be an easy conquest?

I think sometimes they do,

but it's like, I think they expect me to be

like more like a tiger when I come off stage or something.

You know what I mean? And when I get off stage

I'm like, leave me alone, I'm getting dried off here,

I'll be out there in a second to sign my CDs and stuff, but,

and then I've gotta load, so...
