JONES: HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE EXPERIENCE.

I'M YOUR HOST DEDRE JONES AND YOU ARE ABOUT TO HAVE

A MUSICAL EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER.

WE'RE GOING TO TAKE YOU BEHIND THE MUSIC

WITH OUR SPECIAL GUEST

WHO HAS BEEN CALLED AN EMISSARY OF FUN.

JOIN US FOR THIS INTIMATE LOOK AT ONE OF SMOOTH JAZZ'S

BIGGEST STARS.

BRIAN: LET'S GET STARTED.

JONES: OUR SPECIAL GUEST ON THE EXPERIENCE IS BRIAN CULBERTSON.

[MUSIC]

[APPLAUSE]

JONES: BRIAN, I GUESS WE SHOULD START AT THE BEGINNING.

BRIAN: OKAY.

JONES: YOU'RE FROM THAT OVERWHELMINGLY EXCITING CITY

OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.

BRIAN: EXTREMELY EXCITING.

JONES: EXTREMELY EXCITING.

BUT I GUESS WE COULD CALL YOU

A CHILD PRODIGY OF SORTS.

WHAT WERE YOU PLAYING AT THE AGE OF 8?

BRIAN: WELL I STARTED CLASSICAL PIANO LESSONS

LIKE A LOT OF KIDS DID AT THAT AGE.

YOU KNOW KIND OF FORCED TO PLAY A PIANO.

AND I MUST BE HONEST, I DIDN'T LIKE IT VERY MUCH.

JONES: AW WOW.

BRIAN: BUT I KEPT GOING AND EVERY YEAR

I JUST KIND OF PICKED UP A DIFFERENT INSTRUMENT.

JONES: 9 YEARS OLD.

BRIAN: I DECIDED TO PICK UP A DRUM SET,

NOT PICK IT UP, BUT START PLAYING IT.

JONES: YEAH. BRIAN: YEAH.

I JUST LOVED IT.

JONES: YOU LOVE THE DRUMS.

BRIAN: I LOVED DRUMS.

JONES: MUCH BETTER THAN THE PIANO.

BRIAN: I DID BECAUSE I GET TO PLAY ALONG

WITH MY FAVORITE RECORDS OF THE TIME.

SO I WOULD LEARN THE DRUM BEATS OF THE SONGS

THAT I WAS LISTENING TO.

I'D PLAY A LINE,

I'D PUT THE RECORD ON AND PLAY ALONG.

JONES: SO THEN AT 10 YOU WENT TO THE TROMBONE.

BRIAN: I DID.

SEEMS A LITTLE WEIRD, DOESN'T IT.

JONES: YES BECAUSE --

BRIAN: AND I, I STILL REMEMBER THE VERY FIRST DAY

I PICKED UP THE TROMBONE.

I PLAYED IT FOR TWO OR THREE HOURS STRAIGHT

AND MY LIPS SWELLED UP.

I HAD TO GET ICE PACK OUT.

JONES: NOW YOUR FATHER IS A MUSICIAN.

WHAT DID HE PLAY?

BRIAN: TRUMPET.

JONES: AND YOU DIDN'T TRY THE TRUMPET?

BRIAN: I PLAY A LITTLE BIT.

ONCE I STARTED MESSING AROUND WITH WRITING MY OWN MUSIC,

THAT'S WHEN I KNEW, "OKAY THIS IS FOR ME."

AND I WAS INSTANTLY HOOKED.

I JUST LOVED IT SO MUCH.

THAT'S ALL I REALLY WANTED TO DO WAS MAKE MUSIC.

JONES: SO HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO GO TO DEPAUL?

BRIAN: OH DEPAUL WAS, IT WAS INTERESTING.

I ENDED UP DROPPING OFF A DEMO TAPE

WITH SOME OF THE SONGS THAT I HAD WRITTEN,

I THINK MY JUNIOR YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL.

AND THEY ENDED UP PLAYING IT FOR ONE OF THE ADJUNCT PROFESSORS,

WHO WAS ONE OF THE COMPOSITION AND ARRANGING TEACHERS THERE.

AND HE ACTUALLY CALLED ME UP AND ASKED IF I REALLY MADE IT.

HE DIDN'T QUITE BELIEVE THAT I ACTUALLY DID IT.

JONES: CREATE IT?

BRIAN: YES. YES.

AND I WAS LIKE, "UH YEAH."

HE'S LIKE, "ARE YOU SURE YOUR PARENTS DIDN'T DO THAT

OR SOMEBODY ELSE?"

I WAS LIKE, "NO."

HE WAS LIKE, "OKAY WELL COME SEE ME."

SO I ENDED UP STARTED TAKING PRIVATE LESSONS WITH THIS GUY

IN HIGH SCHOOL.

I WOULD DRIVE UP FROM DECATUR EVERY OTHER WEEK TO CHICAGO

AND WOULD TAKE PRIVATE LESSONS WITH HIM

ON ARRANGING, NOTATION, COMPOSITION.

I MEAN, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING YOU COULD THINK OF.

I WAS JUST REALLY HUNGRY TO LEARN.

I CAME IN I BROUGHT A PIECE OF MUSIC

AND HE BASICALLY JUST TORE IT APART.

HE'S LIKE, "MAN THIS IS, THIS IS HORRIBLE.

"YOU KNOW THIS IS,

THIS IS NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS BOB JAMES."

[LAUGHTER]

AND I SAID, "I KNOW.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?"

SO I SAID THE RIGHT THING.

SO HE KEPT TAKING LESSONS FROM HIM OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS

AND HE SAID, "OKAY YOU NEED TO GO TO DEPAUL."

AND HE SAID, "WHAT DO YOU NEED TO MAKE IT HAPPEN?"

AND HE CALLED THEM UP

AND I GOT A SCHOLARSHIP AND I WENT TO DEPAUL.

JONES: CONGRATULATIONS.

THAT'S GREAT.

JOHN: GROWING UP,

YOU LISTENED TO A LOT OF DISTINCT KINDS OF MUSIC,

I WOULD THINK.

BRIAN: I MEAN I WAS WAY, WAY INTO THE JAZZ FUSION

STUFF LIKE DAVID SANBORN, CHICK COREA, ELECTRIC BAND,

THE BRECKER BROTHERS.

I WAS WAY, WAY INTO THAT.

AND AS WELL AS THE FUNK SIDE,

THE EARTH, WIND AND FIRE'S AND THAT KIND OF STUFF.

SO THOSE TWO GENRES WERE MY MAIN INFLUENCES, I WOULD SAY.

JONES: NOW YOU MENTIONED EARTH, WIND AND FIRE.

YOU MET MAURICE WHITE, CORRECT?

BRIAN: ABSOLUTELY.

JONES: YOU WORKED WITH MAURICE WHITE.

TELL US ABOUT THAT.

BRIAN: I DID A COVER OF ONE OF HIS SONGS SERPENTINE FIRE

AND IT STARTED GETTING PLAYED ON RADIO IN L.A..

AND EVIDENTLY HIS ENGINEER AT HIS STUDIO THAT HE OWNED

WAS DRIVING AROUND L.A. AND HEARD IT

AND ACTUALLY WENT TO THE STORE AND BOUGHT THE CD,

WHEN PEOPLE USED TO DO THAT.

[LAUGHTER]

DIDN'T DOWNLOAD IT, COULDN'T DO IT THEN.

AND THEN, BROUGHT EVERYONE INTO THE STUDIO INCLUDING MAURICE

AND SAID, "CHECK THIS OUT."

AND SO I ACTUALLY GOT A CALL FROM MAURICE.

JONES: I MEAN REALLY, WHAT WAS --

BRIAN: SO SURREAL.

JONES: YEAH WHAT WAS IT, WHAT WAS IT LIKE?

BRIAN: HE WAS REALLY SOFT-SPOKEN.

"HEY BRIAN, THIS IS MAURICE.

HOW YOU DOING?"

AND HE JUST WAS VERY CHILLED, VERY SOFT-SPOKEN,

BUT-- I MEAN, IT'S MAURICE WHITE.

AW MAN.

JONES: AND THAT'S ALL YOU CAN SAY.

BRIAN: THAT'S ALL I CAN SAY.

JONES: IT'S MAURICE WHITE.

WELL THEN ON BRINGING BACK THE FUNK

BECAUSE YOU'RE DEFINITELY A SMOOTH JAZZ FUNKY KIND OF GUY.

BRIAN: RIGHT.

JONES: WHEN YOU DID THAT ALBUM THAT WAS BRINGING BACK THE FUNK,

YOU DID A SONG CALLED FUNKIN' LIKE MY FATHER.

BRIAN: FUNKIN' LIKE MY FATHER AND THAT WAS REALLY--

IT MEANS FUNKIN' LIKE OUR FATHER'S OF FUNK:

JAMES BROWN, BOOTSY, GEORGE CLINTON.

AND IF YOU LISTEN TO ALL THE LYRICS

IT REALLY TELLS THAT STORY AND IT WEAVES IT IN AND OUT.

I ACTUALLY CO-WROTE THAT SONG WITH BOOTSY COLLINS.

JONES: WOW.

WHEN YOU DID THAT --

BRIAN: THAT WAS PRETTY COOL.

JONES: -- HOW DID THAT ACTUALLY WORK THOUGH?

BRIAN: I ACTUALLY CAME UP WITH THE TRACK

WITH A GUITAR PLAYER FRIEND OF MINE,

SHELDON REYNOLDS,

WHO USED TO BE IN EARTH, WIND AND FIRE

AS THEIR GUITAR PLAYER.

WE KIND OF WROTE THE TRACK TOGETHER,

THE INITIAL KIND OF BASE OF MUSIC.

THEN WE SENT IT--

WE RECORDED IT AND THEN WE SENT BOOTSY THAT TRACK.

AND WE SAID, "HEY HERE'S SOMETHING,

WHAT DO YOU THINK?"

AND HE'S LIKE, "YEAH I DIG IT."

"YEAH, I DID IT MAN."

[LAUGHTER]

BAD IMPRESSION.

ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER HE SENT ME THIS TRACK

WITH ALL KINDS OF CRAZY STUFF GOING ON.

SO SHELL AND I GOT BACK TOGETHER IN THE STUDIO

AND KIND OF DECIPHERED WHAT BOOTSY PUT ON IT

AND KIND OF MORPHED IT INTO WHAT IT ENDED UP BEING.

SO IT WAS DEFINITELY THIS COLLABORATION

BETWEEN THE THREE OF US.

AND, I MEAN, HE HAD ALL KINDS OF WEIRD SECTIONS GOING ON.

THERE WAS A CARNIVAL SECTION THAT WE REMOVED.

JONES: THAT YOU REMOVED?

BRIAN: YEAH, NO IT WAS ALL OVER THE MAP.

IT WAS LIKE YOU WERE RIDING ONE OF THOSE MERRY GO ROUND THINGS.

I DON'T KNOW, YEAH IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS FUNK SOUND

I WAS LIKE I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS PART.

WE'RE GOING TO CUT THAT, MOVE THIS OVER HERE

AND SO WE DID A LITTLE FRANKENSTEIN

AND WE ENDED UP WITH THAT TRACK.

BUT THAT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES DEFINITELY.

JONES: YOU'VE WORKED WITH A CRAZY NUMBER OF R&B ARTISTS.

I MEAN MOST PEOPLE KNOW THE SMOOTH JAZZ

YOU KNOW ALL OF THAT.

BUT YOU, YOU'VE WORKED WITH AN INCREDIBLE LIST OF PEOPLE.

HOW DID ALL OF THAT COME ABOUT?

BECAUSE YOU HAVE A GOOD EAR

FOR PICKING WHO SHOULD SING WHAT SONG ON YOUR ALBUM.

BRIAN: IT REALLY IS LIKE YOU JUST SAID.

I KIND OF EQUATE IT TO BEING A DIRECTOR AND CASTING A MOVIE.

I FIND THAT YOU HAVE TO REALLY KNOW WHAT DO PEOPLE DO.

WHAT IS THEIR THING.

AND SO WHEN I HAVE A PARTICULAR SONG IN MIND,

I KNOW EXACTLY WHO SHOULD SING IT.

IT'S BEEN GREAT WORKING WITH INCREDIBLE SINGERS.

I'M NOT REALLY A SINGER.

I'LL SING ALONG WITH GUYS IN THE BAND

THAT ARE REALLY GOOD SINGERS.

BUT TO WORK WITH A GREAT SINGER IN THE STUDIO

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE THAT

FROM BRIAN MCKNIGHT, FAITH EVANS,

YOU DID, "LET'S GET IT STARTED."

BRIAN: OH YEAH.

JONES: THAT'S ONE OF YOUR SONGS THAT YOU WROTE.

BRIAN: YES, IT'S ON TONIGHT" WAS DEFINITELY A CONCEPTUAL ALBUM.

IT STARTED WITH THIS SONG, "LET'S GET STARTED"

AND IT WAS ABOUT KIND OF LIKE AN EVENING.

YOU KNOW YOU'RE TRYING TO, YOU'RE GOING OUT,

YOU'RE GOING TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

TRACK 2 IT'S CALLED, "HOOKIN' UP."

JONES: OKAY.

BRIAN: RIGHT.

SEE WHERE I'M GOING?

TRACK 3, "IT'S ON TONIGHT."

[LAUGHTER]

WITH WILL DOWNING SINGING.

YEAH.

AND THEN FROM THEN ON OUT, OH YEAH JUST YOU'RE GOOD TO GO.

[LAUGHS]

SO I WOULD SAY, "LET'S GET STARTED" WAS,

IT WAS DEFINITELY THE MOST UPBEAT KIND OF FUNKY TRACK

ON THAT ALBUM BECAUSE IT WAS LIKE YOU'RE GETTING READY,

YOU'RE GOING OUT ON THE TOWN.

YOU DID A SONG CALLED, "GET IT ON."

BRIAN: "GET IT ON," YEAH.

JONES: TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW THAT HAPPENED?

HOW IT CAME TOGETHER FOR YOU?

BRIAN: THAT SONG I JUST,

I WAS STARTING TO GET FUNKIER, I GUESS.

IN THE BEGINNING,

THIS I GUESS "SMOOTH JAZZ GENRE" WAS A LITTLE MORE LAID BACK.

AND IT JUST SLOWLY GOT A LITTLE FUNKIER AND FUNKIER AND FUNKIER

AS TIME WENT BY.

AND THAT WAS REALLY KIND OF ONE OF THE FIRST RECORDS FOR ME

THAT I THOUGHT YEAH, THIS IS, THIS IS KIND OF FUNKY RIGHT NOW.

SO I WAS JUST TRYING TO PUSH THE ENVELOPE AT THAT POINT.

I'VE CERTAINLY GONE WAY PASSED IT, MORE RECENTLY.
