LOOK AT SEVERAL NEW FILMS HITTING THEATERS,
BEGINNING WITH A NEW REMAKE OF THE INVISIBLE MAN.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT A CLIP.
>>> HE HAS FIGURED OUT A WAY TO BE INVISIBLE.
YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. HE'S NOT DEAD.
I JUST CAN'T SEE HIM.
>>> OKAY. NOW, I AGREE WITH YOU.
ADRIAN WAS BRILLIANT. BUT IT WASN'T BECAUSE OF ANYTHING
HE INVENTED, IT WAS HOW HE GOT IN PEOPLE'S HEADS.
>>> JUSTINE, TELL ME ABOUT THE INVISIBLE MAN.
>>> WELL THIS IS VERY LOOSELY BASED ON THE
CLASSIC STORY. IT'S GIVEN A ME TOO-ESQUE SPIN.
AND IT'S FROM HORROR DIRECTOR LEIGH WHANNELL. AND IT
STARS ELISABETH MOSS AS A WOMAN WHO FLEES AN ABUSIVE
MARRIAGE. AND AS SHE'S GRAPPLING WITH THE PTSD
SHE SUFFERED DURING THE RELATIONSHIP, SHE LEARNS
HE'S ACTUALLY TAKEN HIS OWN LIFE. BUT AFTER A
SERIES OF MYSTERIOUS EVENTS STARTS TO HAPPEN,
SHE STARTS TO SUSPECT THAT NOT ONLY IS HE ALIVE BUT,
BECAUSE HE WAS AN INNOVATOR IN THE FIELD OF
OPTICS, HE'S ACTUALLY MADE HIMSELF INVISIBLE AND IS
SLOWLY DESTROYING HER LIFE. I WENT INTO THIS
WITH ZERO EXPECTATIONS AND I FOUND MYSELF PLEASANTLY
SURPRISED BY HOW ATMOSPHERIC IT IS AND HOW,
IN THE SECOND ACT, IT REALLY PICKS UP STEAM.
THERE'S A LOT OF UNEXPECTED TURNS. AND I
THINK IT'S ACTUALLY A POTENT METAPHOR FOR
ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS.

>>> IT DOES NEED A SECOND ACT BECAUSE THE FIRST I
WOULD SAY 30 OR 45 MINUTES OF THIS MOVIE YOU'RE LIKE,
WAIT A MINUTE. COME ON. I MEAN SHE DOES MUCH BETTER
WORK IN OTHER PLACES, TALKING ABOUT ELISABETH
MOSS NOW. OBVIOUSLY HANDMAID'S TALE IS MUCH
BETTER THAN THIS.

HANDMAID'S TALE. SHE'S, AGAIN, TRYING TO ESCAPE,
TRYING TO GET OUT, YOU KNOW?
>>> YOU KNOW WHAT, I'M ACTUALLY WONDERING ABOUT
ELISABETH MOSS AND ALL HER WEIRDLY HISTRIONIC
PERFORMANCES. I'M KINDA DONE WITH HER. I MEAN, AND
IN GENERAL I HAD ONE GOOD REVELATION AS A RESULT OF
THIS FILM, WHICH I FIND BASICALLY POINTLESS, WHICH
IS IF I NEVER HAVE TO WATCH ANOTHER MOVIE ABOUT
A WOMAN BEING STALKED AGAIN, IT WOULD STILL BE
TOO SOON. I FEEL LIKE HOLLYWOOD, THE FEW FILMS
THAT ACTUALLY STAR WOMEN ARE ALWAYS BASICALLY ABOUT
THEM BEING VICTIMIZED AND OBJECTIFIED. AND THIS
MOVIE HAD ZERO PAYOFF FOR ALL THE STRESS.

KINDA TRIES TO FRAME HER OR MAKE OTHER PEOPLE
AROUND HER THINK SHE'S CRAZY, WHICH IT DOES.

AND IT DID GET INTERESTING. I MEAN, YOU KNOW, LISTEN,

SORRY WE MISSED YOU WHICH IS A REAL 180 FROM THE
INVISIBLE MAN.

KIND-HEARTED BRILLIANTLY RESEARCHED MOVIES THAT ARE
KIND OF IN THE CINEMA-VERITE STYLE,
THE CHAMPION, THE BRITISH WORKING CLASS AND HE IS
AGE 82 AND HE'S DONE IT AGAIN. THIS ONE IS ON THE
GIG ECONOMY. IT'S ABOUT ONE NEW CASTLE FAMILY OF
FOUR THAT'S LIVING PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK,
THE DELIVERY DRIVER DAD, A HOME-MADE MOM BOTH WORKING
ENDLESS HOURS WITH ZERO BENEFITS OR
PROTECTIONS. THIS IS REALLY UNDIDACTIC EXPERT
STORYTELLING AND CRAFTWORK AND THERE'S REALLY
BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCES FROM KRIS HITCHEN AND
DEBBIE HONEYWOOD AS THE PARENTS. AND I FEEL LIKE
THE WHOLE PREMISE OF HOW HIGH THE STAKES ARE IN
THESE PEOPLE'S LIVES AND THE ENORMOUS PRESSURE THAT
ORDINARY PEOPLE ARE NOW FACING, INCLUDING THE HIGH
PRICE THAT KIDS ARE PAYING, IS DEMONSTRATED
WITH SUCH EMPATHY AND A OF VERY LITTLE SERMONIZING.
IT IS NOT AN EASY WATCH, IT'S A HARD MOVIE, BUT
IT'S WORTH IT.
>>> AND THIS IS THE DIRECTOR WHOSE AT HIS BEST
WHEN HE'S CAPTURING THE PERILS OF THE BRITISH
WORKING CLASS, AND FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND HE
CONDUCTED A NUMBER OF OFF THE RECORD INTERVIEWS-
>>> YEAH, HE ALWAYS DOES.
>>> WITH REAL FAMILIES AND IT GIVES IT THAT ADDED
LAYER OF AUTHENTICITY, AND STORYLINES THAT WE DON'T
NORMALLY SEE PORTRAYED ON SCREEN, BUT ARE SO
IMPORTANT. ITS POIGNANT AND REALLY PACKS A PUNCH,
IT'S SO AFFECTING.

FINE MOVIE FOR THE PERFORMANCES BUT IT SORT
OF GOES NOWHERE, I MEAN IT DOESN'T HAVE A BEGINNING,
A MIDDLE, AND AN END.

>>> AND, I MEAN, IT JUST SORTA STOPS. IT'S VERY
HARD TO WATCH. YOU GUYS ARE SAYING LIKE BE READY

MINUTES INTO THIS THING AND THOUGHT THIS IS,
I'M NOT SURE I CAN STAY FOR THE WHOLE RIDE. I'M GLAD I
DID AND I WON'T THINK ABOUT AN AMAZON PACKAGE
THE SAME WAY EVER AGAIN.

THIS GIG ECONOMY I MEAN THIS GUY IS LIKE GIVEN A
PACK OF LIES THAT YOU CAN OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND
YOU'RE GONNA DRIVE THE DELIVERY VAN AND DELIVER
ALL THE PACKAGES, AND, YOU KNOW, HE JUST WINDS UP
SPIRALING DOWNWARD AND HIS WIFE. BY THE WAY BOTH
PERFORMANCES ARE TREMENDOUS.

CONDITIONS THAT THIS FAMILY HAS TO ENDURE.
I MEAN, THE ENTIRE FAMILY, THE SON, THE DAUGHTER,
ANYWAY I CAN'T RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE ENOUGH, SORRY
WE MISSED YOU. LET'S MOVE ON. NEXT UP IS A NEW FILM
CALLED ORDINARY LOVE. BILL.
>>> WELL, LIAM NEESON HAS A CERTAIN SET OF SKILLS,
BUT MELLOW-DRAMA IS NOT ONE OF THEM. HE'S MARRIED
TO THE TERRIFIC LESLEY MANVILLE, SHE WAS OSCAR
NOMINATED FOR PHANTOM THREAD A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO,
AND SHE NEEDS TO BE GIVEN MORE TO DO HERE.
WHAT SHE'S GIVEN IS CANCER AND THAT'S BASICALLY THE
ENTIRE SCRIPT. SHE HAS BREAST CANCER, THEY LIVE
IN A SMALL TOWN SOMEPLACE IN IRELAND AND THE MINUTIA
OF WHAT SHE GOES THROUGH INCLUDES WAY TOO MANY
CLICH ÉS, INCLUDING A GAY COUPLE THEY MEET IN
CHEMO-THERAPY AND SOMETHING HORRIFIC THAT'S
HAPPENED TO THEIR DAUGHTER. LISTEN, I GET IT,
HE'S VERY TIRED OF MAKING THE SAME MOVIE OVER
AND OVER AGAIN. BUT I THINK THAT THIS IS KIND OF
A MISFIRE. IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO WATCH AND I
THINK AUDIENCES ARE GONNA SHOW UP AND GO, OKAY SHE'S
GOT CANCER, WHEN DOES SHE GET KIDNAPPED?
>>> I DON'T AGREE WITH YOU NECESSARILY. I THINK THAT
HE, LIAM NEESON HAS NEVER BEEN MY FAVORITE, BUT I
THINK PARTLY BECAUSE PERHAPS IN HIS OWN LIFE HE
CAN RELATE TO A DEAD OR A SICK WIFE. HE BRINGS
SOMETHING NEW TO THIS, IT'S WORTHY I THINK AS A
CHARACTER STUDY OF THE MARRIAGE DYNAMICS FOR THE
"IN SICKNESS" RATHER THAN THE "IN HEALTH" PART.
>>> AND THIS IS ACTUALLY WRITTEN BY PLAYWRIGHT OWEN
MCCAFFERTY, WHOSE WIFE DID GO THROUGH THIS ORDEAL,
SO I THINK-

TYPES OF STORIES. IT'S USUALLY GLORIFIED ON

ON THE WALL, WATCHING A REAL COUPLE. AS OPPOSED TO
A FILM WHICH COULD BE A GOOD THING OR A BAD THING.

TO HIM. LIAM NEESON IS PRETTY GOOD HUSBAND,
BUT I WANTED MORE TO THEIR CHARACTERS.

WE SEE HER LOSE HER HAIR AND GET SURGERY. I DON'T KNOW
WHO WOULD REALLY WANNA SIT THROUGH A MOVIE WATCHING THIS.

LET'S JUST BE CLEAR. THEY CLEARLY DUMPED THE FILM
BECAUSE THEY KNEW IT DIDN'T HAVE AN AUDIENCE.

THAT IT'S DISTILLED, LIKE ALL ITS REALLY LOOKING AT

KINDA RESPECTED THAT. I'M SHOCKED THAT-

THE FILM. AND AFTER AN EPIC PUBLIC FALL FROM
GRACE, DETERMINED TO WIN BACK THE PEOPLES FAVOR,
HE HAS THE BRIGHT IDEA OF HOSTING A LAVISH 60TH
BIRTHDAY PARTY ON THE ISLAND OF MYKONOS. THIS IS
FROM DIRECTOR, MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM WHOSE MORE
KNOWN FOR DARK POLITICAL STORIES. THIS IS MORE ON
THE SATIRICAL VEIN OF HIS FILM 24 HOUR PARTY
PEOPLE AND THOUGH IT HAS A LOT TO SAY ON THE
PROBLEMATIC NATURE OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY AND IT
PROVES TO BE AN ENTERTAINING PIECE OF
ESCAPISM, IT HAS TONAL ISSUES THAT ARE VERY
IMBALANCED AND IT'S TRYING TO JUGGLE DRAMA AND
PACKING A PUNCH, BUT ULTIMATELY FALLS FLAT.

AND ONCE AGAIN I KEEP SAYING STEVE COOGAN IS ONE OF THE-

AND ONE OF THE REASONS MAY BE MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM.
YOU KNOW, YOU MENTIONED 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE,
THEY ALSO MAKE THOSE ROAD TRIP MOVIES,
THAT ARE GREAT TOGETHER. BUT THIS MOVIE
IS A REAL MISFIRE. I MEAN IT'S GOT A LOT GOING ON,
IT LOOKS GREAT, IT'S IN GREECE, THEY'RE HAVING FUN.
THEY'RE PROBABLY MAKING THE OTHER MOVIE,
WHICH IS SET IN GREECE, WITH BRYDEN WHERE THEY
DRIVE AROUND AND EAT AT ALL THOSE RESTAURANTS.
SO THIS WAS LIKE A SIDE THOUGHT AND IT FEELS LIKE
A SIDE THOUGHT. I MEAN HE'S A WEALTHY GUY, THERE
ARE A COUPLE OF FUNNY BITS WHERE THEY HIRE SOME
LOOKALIKES, INCLUDING A GEORGE MICHAEL LOOKALIKE,
THAT'S A LAUGH OUT LOUD MOMENT. I WISH THERE HAD
BEEN MORE OF THE MOVIE LIKE THAT, I CAN'T
RECOMMEND THIS AND I'M A HUGE STEVE COOGAN FAN.
>>> THE PROBLEM IS THAT THEY'RE DOING SORT OF CAKE
AND EAT IT TOO, FILM-MAKING HERE.
LIKE HE'S TRYING TO MAINTAIN IRONIC COMEDIC
DETACHMENT, AT THE SAME TIME HE'S TRYING TO MAKE
THESE SORT OF SEARING SOCIAL COMMENTARY, AND THE
TWO TONES DON'T MIX I FELT LIKE I WAS WATCHING
TWO MOVIES IN ONE. TO ME THE ONLY REALLY GOOD THING IS,
I'M NOT A HUGE STEVE COOGAN FAN, BUT THIS WAS
AN EXCELLENT USE OF HIS NATURAL SMUGG-NESS.

BECAUSE IT MAKES SOME EXCELLENT POINTS ABOUT HOW
UNDERPAID WOMAN ARE AROUND THE WORLD BUT THE

A PROBLEM WITH. ALL RIGHT, MOVING ON. THERE'S A NEW
FILM IN THEATERS CALLED THE NIGHT CLERK. LISA.
>>> OKAY, ONE OF THE WEIRDER GENRE'S TO COME
OUT OF HOLLYWOOD IN THE RECENT YEARS IS THE
THRILLER THAT'S ANCHORED BY A PERSON WITH A
NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER. BE IT TOURETTE'S IN
MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN, OR AUTISM IN THE ACCOUNTANT,
AND NOW YOU CAN PUT THIS WEIRD MOVIE INTO THE MIX.
LIKE THE EXTREMELY UNORIGINAL TITLE SUGGESTS,
IT'S ABOUT A NIGHT CLERK, PLAYED BY TYE SHERIDAN,
WHO WITNESSES A MURDER THROUGH THE SPYWARE HE
USES TO WATCH THE HOTEL RESIDENTS. ESPECIALLY
WOMEN HE FINDS COMPELLING. SOUNDS CREEPY, IT IS.
BUT WORSE, THE FILM DOESN'T REALLY KNOW, ALSO DOESN'T
KNOW WHAT TONE TO TAKE. IS IT A MURDER-MYSTERY WITH
THE GREAT JOHN LEGUIZAMO, TOTALLY WASTED AS A
DETECTIVE, OR IS THIS AN EMPATHIC PORTRAIT OF A MAN
STRUGGLING TO CONNECT? THE ENDING ESPECIALLY MAKES
ZERO SENSE.

PROMOTES VOYEURISM AND THE MALE GAZE.
AND WATCHING ANA DE ARMAS' CHARACTER FALL FOR THIS
MALADJUSTED INCEL IN THE MAKING WAS INCREDIBLY
EERIE AND IT'S ALSO DISHEARTENING TO WATCH
THESE TALENTED ACTORS TRY TO ELEVATE THIS MATERIAL,
WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY AIMING TO BE HITCHCOCK-ING,
AND IT COMPLETELY MISSES THE MARK.
>>> SHE'S SO AMAZING IN KNIVES OUT, THAT THIS
FEELS LIKE A HUGE, HUGE STEP DOWN FOR HER. AND THE

DARKLY, VERY DARKLY COMEDIC MOMENTS IN THIS
BECAUSE HE HAS NO FILTER, BECAUSE HE HAS WHAT
THEY CALL IN THE MOVIE, ASPERGER'S. I MEAN,
HE WOULD GO UP TO AN OBESE PERSON AND SAY, YOU'RE
TOO FAT, YOU HAVE TO LOSE WEIGHT.

ROUNDS OUT A TEDIOUS TALE OF SCHWARTZ TRYING TO GET
BACK INTO STAND-UP COMEDY AND CRYSTAL TRYING TO HELP
HIM GET BACK WITH HIS OLD GIRLFRIEND. IT SEEMS FUNNY
ON PAPER IN PLACES, IT'S NOT FUNNY.

BILLY CRYSTAL WHO IS TRYING TO REUNITE WITH HIS ESTRANGED
SON, PLAYED BY NATE CORDDRY. AND HE'S LEAVING
THESE REALLY SAD VOICE MESSAGES ON HIS MACHINE,
THAT NOBODY'S LISTENING TO. HE SHOWS UP
UNEXPECTEDLY AT THAT SONS HOUSE. I MEAN THESE ARE
SOME POIGNANT SCENES AND THERE'S ALSO A RENDEZVOUS
THAT THE BEN SCHWARTZ CHARACTER HAS, WITH HIS
EX-GIRLFRIEND WHO IS NOW MARRIED. THAT'S KIND OF
INTERESTING. SO I THINK THE DRAMATIC STUFF KIND
OF WORKS NOW THAT I LOOKED AT IT ON A-
