I'm your host Tim White,

coming to you from the stage of the Lincoln Theatre

here in Marion, Virginia.

Another great hour of entertainment ready,

so let's kick it off with Charly Markwart.

Charly is an acoustic singer-songwriter

who writes authentic songs that come from the heart.

Her music tells personal stories that speak universal truths

and has the ability to touch all who listen.

Taught and trained in the Carter Family style,

we're pleased to bring to the stage Charly Markwart.

♪ With nothing but the trees in his head ♪

♪ Some called him crazy and others called him marked ♪

♪ But old A.P. Carter didn't care what they said ♪

♪ He was seeking out the words and rhymes ♪

♪ To make those Carter songs

♪ Songs that tell the story of their lives ♪

♪ They sang of God and family and life in the mountains ♪

♪ They wouldn't sing a song

♪ That didn't stand for what was right ♪

♪ And all that he wanted was for the music to carry on ♪

♪ He wanted it to last for years to come ♪

♪ So I hope that he knows

♪ Though he's long been dead and gone ♪

♪ To this day we're singing his songs ♪

♪ When we sing bury me beneath the willow ♪

♪ Under the weeping willow tree ♪

♪ So he may know where I am sleeping ♪

♪ Then perhaps he'll wait for me ♪

♪ He is finding all the words and rhymes ♪

♪ To make those Carter songs

♪ Songs that tell the story of their lives ♪

♪ With no one to follow after, no vision to trace ♪

♪ The vision in his mind led his feet ♪

♪ And all that he wanted was for the music to carry on ♪

♪ He wanted it to last for years to come ♪

♪ So I hope that he knows

Well, unfortunately we're losing a lot

of the classic country greats

that have carried on the songs of the Carter family.

And a couple years ago, we lost a big one in Merle Haggard.

And I heard a radio interview just after he died

and they said that not long before his death,

he was talking to his friend Bobby Bare

and they were talking about all the country greats

that were passing away.

And Merle turned to Bobby and he said,

"Who's gonna close the show?"

And that really, that was a sad question

and it really hit me hard and I went home inspired

to write this song with that same title,

so I hope you like it.
