- [Photographer] Nice, very nice.

- [Narrator] This is a Syrian brown bear.

Brown bears are found throughout much

of the Northern Hemisphere,

but the Syrian brown bear is thought to be extinct

in its namesake country.

Even before their civil war,

the Syrian brown bear was in deep trouble,

so it's no surprise that the bear's last sighting

in Syria was more than 50 years ago.

- [Photographer] She can stand behind me

and be right over me.

You just get his attention.

(playful music)

- Well, this guy's absolutely

wanting to get in here.

(shutter clicking)

Nothing makes him nervous,

so whenever he stops to look up, we'll get him.

This one's nice.

He looks sweet, the light's soft and intricate.

We'll do a few more until the grapes run out.

This one's good, too, very nice.

He's looking at the camera, so mission accomplished.

4,999 species, one more to go to get to 5,000,

thanks to the Syrian brown bear.
