Before I actually went on The Voice
I was not singing.
I was actually leasing apartments for a living
and I was very happy with doing that
and was living a very comfortable life.
And then my mom turned to me one day
and said why don't you go audition for The Voice?
And I looked at her like she was crazy
because I was like Mom, this is why we think you're crazy
'cause I haven't even sang in three years
and you want me to go audition for The Voice, okay.
But I said yes, something in me said yes
and I committed to it
and I was very surprised along the way.
Just discovering a whole long about myself
that I did not even know
and also I was singing again after three years
and so it was a lot of work, too.
In 2019 I feel like I'm just getting started.
I did so much in 2018, it was amazing.
It was an amazing year
I'm very grateful for everything that happened
but I feel like there's still a lot left in me
and I don't know why I'm about to start crying.
Isn't that so weird?
[Guitarist] I got you.
I feel like I'm so full
and my heart is full
and not just full of music but of faith and purpose
and I'm ready to take on the next chapter of my life.
That's what this song is about.
In the song it says just when you think I'm at the end
in a second I'm gonna catch my second wind.
I've learned growing up that you don't run the race
just to run in it
but you run the race to win it.
That's sort of my motto in life

Since I'm telling y'all the story of my life
might as well continue.
This song is called Merry Go 'Round.
It's by Kacey Musgraves.
I love all the melodic parts, all that stuff is great.
I think it's a beautiful song.
But it also tells the story of my life.
Sometimes we can get stuck
and think that we're okay
and everything's just okay and then that's great
and then we don't ever have to get out of our comfort zone
or do anything spectacular
and I'm here today to tell you that
that's not true.
And that God has created us to be spectacular people
and so we need to have the fire inside
to go out and chase our dreams
and not get stuck in a merry go 'round
that sometimes we do.
Doing the same thing at the same time everyday.
That was me and someone had to push me
and say you're better than that
and you can do more than that.
-So thanks, mom. -(laughs)

We're here at Muscle Shoals to Music Row Live
in the world famous Studio A
at Fame Studios, Avalon Avenue, Muscle Shoals.
Our guest this month
for the very first time on Muscle Shoals to Music Row Live
Spensha Baker, how are you?
I'm so good, I can't even believe I'm here.
I have to admit
you are so genuinely in awe of this room
and rightly so, you got Wilson Pickett over this side
you've got Aretha Franklin on this side.
-How does it feel? -Etta on this side, too.
Etta, yeah can't miss Etta James.
No pressure or anything.
How does it feel to sit in this room?
I'm honored that I was even thought of
to be honest with you.
I was on the show last year this time
so it's been a while.
I've been out on the circuit, working.
So that someone would even think of me to invite me here
I'm just honored.
You absolutely have the talent.
No one gets to the top four of The Voice
especially on Team Blake.
Team Blake always seems to have
the best artists that come through that show.
He knows what he's doing.
-He really does. -Blake.
We know what he saw in you
'cause we got to hear a little bit of it tonight
but let's talk a little bit about where you started.
You've been performing since you were six-years-old.
I started singing at age six
and then my mom put me right in front of the congregation
so I started singing in churches all across Texas
my mom and I and our little broke down minivan
just traveling across Texas, singing in churches
and then at nine I was on something called
Christian Artist Talent Search
which was my first time being on TV.
Then after I did that I was like Mom I think I wanna sing.
Whatever these people do for a job, I wanna sing as the job.
So she submitted me for Star Search.
So I was on Star Search in 2004
when Arsenio Hall was the host
and that's how I got discovered by Ron Fair
of Interscope Records
and then I recorded my very first gospel album
-on Interscope at 14. -That was Out Loud.
Mm-hmm.
You had a record deal by the time you were 15 years old.
14, mm-hm.
-14. -Mm-hm.
I released a gospel album, I traveled across the country
for a really long time on that album
until the label and I parted ways.
Then the second chapter of my life started.
You took a break, basically.
That's a nice way of sayin' it.
-I'm just gonna step away. -I'm just gonna chill.
No, I had no intention of ever singing again.
-Really? -Yeah.
I had kinda lost the passion for it to be honest.
You're doing something at first
it's new, it's fresh
it's like this fun, this is my life's purpose.
And then after a while you're like
this stuff takes a lot more work than I thought.
This is not what I thought it was gonna be.
And then I got older and I wanted to have a regular job
and I just wanted to be done with music
so I just quit all together.
No intentions of returning, until!
Until your mother said
why don't you go do this Voice thing?
She literally turned to me
and said you know they're gonna be in Austin this weekend.
Why don't you just go do it.
You're not doing anything.
And I was like, okay mom.
Whatever you say, girl.
And I just
-(laughing) -(Spensha sighs)
I'm like she's not getting it, is she?
I don't wanna sing anymore.
For some reason I said yes, I said okay
and I did it.
And every time I made it though an audition process
I was surprised, every time.
I couldn't believe it.
I thought I haven't sang in three years
I'm gonna sound a ratchet hot mess
and I never did.
It's like riding a bike.
You have so much presence
and you're so comfortable with a camera
and with a live audience, I have to wonder--
I was on TV for four months.
In front of literally millions and millions of people.
-(laughing) -Yes.
I have to wonder, your parents
both your mom and your dad are veterans.
-They are. -They are military veterans.
My mom was in the Army for 13 years
and then my dad just got out after 30.
(audience applauds)
It was a fun childhood.
You guys basically lived everywhere.
My parents have gone everywhere.
I luckily have lived in two states via the military.
I got really lucky
but talk to my parents and that's a whole different story.
Do you think that growing up with two military parents
even moving as little as you did
may have prepared you, sort of made you at ease
with you're a room full of complete strangers
but I don't care, how you doing?
I don't think anything could ever prepare you for that
but I will say that being a military brat
I learned a lot of things from watching my parents
that helped me in situations like The Voice.
Like hard work and perseverance
and keeping your eye on the prize
and setting a mission and a vision and going for it.
Those sorts of things, that type of work ethic
prepared me for things like The Voice
that require all of that.
You still actually do quite a bit
actively for the military as far as performance.
Yes, any chance I get.
I am always on a military base to do a show.
About two months ago I sang on Fort Sam Houston
which is the Army base
now joint military base in San Antonio.
Anytime I can sing to soldiers I jump at it
and throughout the course of my career
I've always done things that are military oriented.
I've been on USO tours
I've gone overseas to Germany, to Italy et cetera
to visit our troops out there
'cause they're doing something
that allows me to be able to do this.
Ever perform for a sitting president?
-Twice. -Twice?
I knew the answer to that but I wanted her to say it.
I liked the way you set that up, that was nice.
I sang for Bush in 2008
and then for the current administration two months ago.
At the Tree Lighting Ceremony.
At the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.
-Wow. -Christmas time.
Let's talk about Spensha Baker now.
Let's talk about you have the single Old Soul.
-I do. -And you're working on the EP
that that'll be a part of.
Yes, my very first EP.
Your very first country, mainstream country EP.
Now the song Old Soul, that's not one that you wrote
but you are a songwriter, you're working on songwriting
but that one is not.
Mm-mm, I actually got Old Soul while I was on the show.
During the finale
they give each artist a chance to debut a single.
I got a couple different choices
and then it came down to two.
One was written by Maren Morris and Josh Osborne
and the other one was Old Soul.
I was like, I gotta get the Maren song.
How cool would that be
to tell people that Maren wrote my song, oh my god?
Then after further torture
and deliberation and conflict in my brain
something was jumping out at me about Old Soul.
It's like when I sang it out loud it came to life.
It felt like a soul experience when I heard the song
and sang it for the first time.
And that's how Old Soul came to be.
It was written by a former Voice contestant named Sam James.
He was on about six seasons before me
so it was a nice full circle moment.
Then it was also written with Kat Higgins
who writes for Carrie Underwood now
and Marti Jane Dodson who is incredibly talented.
You're actually still writing with Sam.
Yes I am.
He and I are collaborating on some things
and I also write alone
especially after the show
I just got a flood of ideas.
So I'm ready to tell people my story
how I walked away from something
I knew I was supposed to be doing
and then my return to it and what my life is now.
Coming up soon you're gonna be performing
for a Hallmark Channel, Movie Guild Awards?
Yes, the Movie Guide Awards.
-Movie Guide Awards. -Mm-hm.
For the Hallmark Channel which is cool
'Cause I didn't know they had that.
My mom and I are all about the Hallmark movies.
Y'all know y'all like 'em, too.
They're good, they make you cry.
I will not confess, but I've seen eight or nine of them.
The Christmas movies are great.
Don't tell anybody I said that.
Okay, well you just announced it to the world.
(laughing)
-I did? -Yeah.
I'm very excited to be a part of that
and I also have some more shows that I'm doing
in the upcoming months
and then I'm also getting together
with some of The Voice alum.
You're gonna be in New York
with some of the guys from The Voice.
Yes, we're gettin' the band back together.
So people can come re-experience
what they experienced on the show, so that's cool too.

10 more, okay.
Let's do My Church.
I grew up singing gospel music.
Y'all will see why I love singin' this song so much.
It just feels like home
and also I think we all have a place that we go to escape.
This is about that place kinda being music.
Well, for me.
Music is how I escape, it's also how I get in touch
with myself and other people.
It's a weird little mixture.
Where ever that place is for you that just feels like church
it's just a soul experience
think of that place and for me it's here, doing this.

and I love that music finds us where we are
so thank you to everyone who is watching.
Never give up on your dreams.
You're next blessing is right around the corner
if you dare to dream it.
This next song, my last song
is called Old Soul.
It's actually my single.
It is being played across the country on country radio
which I could not have imagined would be happening.
It's about the kinda love that endures and lasts forever
and I know we have the person in our life
who loves us no matter if we're high or low
or things are going really great
or they're not going really great.
I know I have people in my life
whom I consider my old souls.
The chorus says this ain't about rock and roll
this ain't gasoline on fire.
In other words, this is not temporary
it's not momentary, this is forever.
And for me I have that kind of relationship with music
and with my family.
