This next song is gonna be an older song of mine

but sometimes life's circumstances just really speak to you

right in the heart and make sure you need to play

a song together.

So this next song is a deeply religious song

that we're gonna perform that we've given a lot of thought

to, it's a song called, Saws All and an Eightball,

and Baby That's All I Need.

And I was in a gas station in Kentucky two days ago

on the way here and this young woman in the prime

of her life walked in, great hair, big smile on her face

and turns out she was in handcuffs and shackles.

First I thought this was like a little early Halloween thing

but turns out she had three Sheriff's buddies

escorting her to the gas station there at the truck stop.

So this one goes out to her and whatever life circumstance

brought her into my life.

Yeah Heather Moulder over here on the keyboards,

all the way from Woodbury, Tennessee.

And on the guitar, a special treat, a lot of people ask me

what it is but now you're seeing it with your own eyes.

The man, the myth, the legend, the Memphis guitar,

Adam Hill, from Memphis, Tennessee over here.

- Originally from West North Carolina.

So Appalachia?

- Yep up in there, outside of Asheville and Swannanoa.

- Alright.

So obviously musically, the music of the Appalachian region,

depending on where you land, is really some of the most

iconic music culturally out of the United States.

How much, if any of that, impacted what you're doing now?

- None.

- Really?

- Yeah, I grew up and that wasn't my thing.

It didn't resonate with me for whatever reason.

And the regional music that I fell in love with

was the North Mississippi blues music of artists

like Mississippi Fred McDowell and R.L. Burnside

and that's what originally led me to that region

to learn slide guitar.

I played a lot of blues and boogie woogie type piano

but it was the slide that really dug me into

a really regional music.

Time there, spent a long time in Memphis,

which is how I originally got hooked up with some

of the folks here and some of the folks in my band.

Now I live in Nashville but that's more recent

and not as much as a geographic.

Basically I just moved back and forth on I-40.

(laughing)

I can go east and west, I can't seem to go up or down.

- Oh well, we like having you here.

- Yeah, it's got a little off but we're not too far

from where I still come from.

- But you're here now, brand new album, Little More Faith.

Does the title speak to the content?

- Oh yeah.

- You did, Circle Will Be Unbroken tonight.

- Yep, and that's on the record.

- Okay so I was gonna ask you, A Little More Faith,

does that include songs like Circle?

- Yeah it includes Circle which I think is the only

straight up cover on there and then there are a bunch

of traditionals woven in including a Fred McDowell song

called Just A Little More Faith, the title track.

Then there are some of the songs that I've written

that are very influenced by that,

like Lord I'm So Glad I Don't Crave Everything I See.

I don't know whether to call them roots or blues

or gospel but to my mind they're after some of the same

feelings as some of those spiritual songs that aren't quite

as on the nose.

- What led you to record an album of this type?

- It's music I love.

That kind of slide guitar plus that vocal harmony.

Heather's wurlitzer playing is really special,

and just a groove rhythm, that's the sound in my head

and I finally have the people to do it.

This next song we're gonna do is a song off our new record

which is called Just A Little More Faith,

and it is actually the gospel tune on the record,

no lies this time.

And it's a song that everybody said, Reed, you can't do that

it's just been done, and I said, too bad.

So here we are with you performing it.

But I like it a lot.

A song called Will the Circle be Unbroken.

Little bit of pop staple style to it,

another series of ghosts floating around in here

sounding like this.

That's a good one for everyone waiting for their nostalgia

tune, tuned into the radio.

Get in another one of my secret slide tunings

to do a song for a couple of friends of mine back home,

Michael and Jessica, who are fighting the good fight

as public school teachers back in North Carolina.

This is a song, my buddy is a big bourbon collector,

due to his profession, and every time I go through town

we get deep into the only room he keeps locked in his house,

which, you guessed it, bourbon room.

He tells me stories of his daily heroics in the classroom

and all of those stories have made it into this song.

It's gonna be hot.

Tomorrow night, it'll be hot 'cause we're playin' also

across the river at 116 East Melbourne which will be fun.
