A lot of music that came out of this place is the reason

that we made this record the way we did.

We're about to play the title track

of our brand-new record that we've put out the end

of September, earlier this year.

The record is called Change the Whole Thing,

and people like Aretha and Etta James and Otis Redding

and Wilson Pickett and The Allman Brothers,

they are totally blended throughout this record.

And it's a song about love.

This album's about love.

It's about family.

I got to make it in Nashville, Tennessee

with what you see up here.

That is my musical family.

And we did it live, all in the room, together,

no isolation booths.

And I think that this place has a lot to do with it.

We all grew up listening to songs

that made us make it that way.

So on the point of this song in particular,

if you can find a situation

and because you were there leave it a little bit better,

you're doing exactly what you got to do.

- All right, now the first song

on the album, Just Getting By,

is that the first song you cut for the album?

Is that right?

- That's the first song that we cut

in the process of the recording.

And we, again, didn't really know

that we were going to end up cutting 13 sides,

and we didn't know that we were about

to embark on a year-and-a-half journey.

We just wanted to try something out

and see how it resonated with people

who had been following me up until that point.

And it was overwhelming.

We released digital 45s, periodically,

in anticipation of the full album release,

just to kinda ease people into this new sound.

And I could tell that people sensed a difference.

There was a presence, and they could hear the camaraderie

in the music and how it was recorded

and little things that I would comb over before,

little cracks in my vocal,

or things that would be considered imperfections,

ended up being my favorite elements of this record.

And we all had to make compromises.

We all had to work together.

Some of my best friends had to let me be the boss sometimes,

and then even on my record I was like,

no, you're right.

And we had to give in and decide

as a whole what was the best take from start to finish,

'cause that was something

that we promised ourself we would do

with each one of these songs,

was take the best take for each song,

give it the production that it deserved

and not try and fit this into one box.

We aren't country.

We aren't anything in particular.

We're just trying to do service

and justice to the song and to each other.

And it made it really easy.

Even as strict as the rules we set out for ourself were,

following them made it a no-brainer,

and we all just fell in line and loved what we were doing.

- Give it up for this band, everybody.

Graduating from college and go to national and do that.

But I also think that those forces of opposition

that edged me out, I didn't sometimes get the airplay

at country radio that I wanted,

and I moved here to be a country artist,

and that's kind of shifted a bit, too,

'cause this album is totally a soul, American music record,

those forces of opposition have shaped me

to who I am and who I surround myself with.

So it's kind of awesome.

- All right, well, let's talk about the current album,

Change the Whole Thing, and it's available now.

This album was special.

For folks who don't do a lot

in the world of audio/music recording,

they may not understand the significance

of how you recorded this album.

So talk a little bit about why you chose to do it this way.

- Sure.

In Nashville, now, the way that most records are recorded,

which is because we have the advantage

and technology of doing it this way,

is you get the band in the room,

and you get this great track down

and mix that and like tune it.

The drummer might go take another pass,

because they're all in their own rooms, so you can do that.

And then the vocalist comes in, a couple of days later.

They do their part, and you might comp together a bunch

of different takes that they do.

And it sounds perfect, perfect in the technical sense,

and we've gotten used to hearing records that way.

And every record that I had made, up until this record,

for the most part, I had done with that approach.

And I kept getting this comment after shows,

which I think was intended to be a compliment,

but I took it as what is missing.

They'd say, we have all your stuff from iTunes.

It's great.

We listen to you on Spotify.

But we just have to come to the live shows,

because there's something compelling

about that energy and that presence,

and that made me examine how I had been making music.

And I had all these wonderful people around me

who were people that I love

and also tremendously talented people,

and I didn't have a record label telling me when or how

or how much it would cost to put out a record.

I just could do it on my own,

because I've been blessed to have a great team around me

and stay in the game and be able to keep doing this,

and I decided to just go in and cut a few sides.

We didn't even think we'd make a record at first.

So this was back in July.

And we said let's just cut these three songs that we love.

Let's have us all in one room,

making music as one, like a family.

Sarah was on the other end of that room.

So if she was drumming, you could hear it my vocal mic,

and I had Larry singing right there,

and it was all bleeding together.

If one person messed up, we all had to go together again.

But it was okay.

We respected the process.

And the result was so great that

that ended up being how we made the entire record.
