- Yeah! - Yeah!

- Thank you. - Thank you.

- It's alright, mate.

- They are the Bass brothers,

they are Mark, Nathan, and Kieran.

Now Nathan, you're the oldest, right?

- Yes, that's right.

- But is it safe to say

that Mark kind of started this whole thing

at a very young age? - Yes he did, yeah he did.

- Yeah man.

- So you won, what, youngest guitarist or what was it?

- It was Young Guitarist of the Year.

I entered a competition out of the back

of a guitarist magazine and I think about 6,000 people

entered it and at the time I got through the finals

and made my own track like the year previous

you had to write your own, you were alright to sort of

do a cover but a guitar teacher of mine at the time

helped me write a song and then got me through

to the finals and I didn't really think I would win it

'cause I was only 12 and I didn't have the mindset

to win anything, I was just like noodling away.

Just using my ear to pick up music that was just

ridiculous, you know, Joe Satriani Flying in a Blue Dream,

you know. - Yeah.

- It's not common music but it's very technical

but I would just listen to the notes

and pick 'em out and then I sort of

did that at the Guitarist of the Year

and I won with a smile on my face

and everyone else was just really mad at me

'cause I was 12, you know? (laughing)

- This guy was like, "I just wanna chop his fingers off."

(laughing)

I think Marvin said that.

He sent me a prize.

- If I'm not mistaken, the judges were like Eric Clapton,

Steve Vaughn, and Brian May. - Yes.

- Of Queen. - Yeah.

It's ridiculous, yeah.

- They picked you.

- They picked my little bum.

- Wow!

Okay so after that, and you performed that

in Wembley Stadium in front of thousands

and thousands of people. - Yeah.

- And your brothers were like, we want in on this.

So Nathan started playing drums

and Kieran you were bass.

- Well yeah but I didn't even think of picking up

an instrument, to be honest.

- Really? - Yeah, like you just,

the manager who found Mark, like Nathan just started playing

drums and then so he looked and me and he saw us

as a British version of Hanson.

So they'd only just come out around the UK and stuff.

So he looked at me and was like, "Do you play anything?"

And I'm like, I've got a Buzz Lightyear.

(laughing)

You know what I mean?

- No, you gotta hold this bass.

- No, hold the bass guitar and then he tells me

when you hear the notes change in the music,

just move your hands around.

Bang and like we done an audition with labels

and had like 17 labels after us.

- Wow, and so before you know it

you guys are actually on tour in the late '90s,

you had a record deal, you were on tour

with the likes of Britney Spears, Boyzone,

I think even the Backstreet Boys maybe at one point.

- Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and Lit.

- Wow.

- The Spice Girls for a moment.

It was great, it was fun.

- And now this was primarily in the UK or did you?

- Yeah it was the UK and parts of Europe

and we were just about to come to America

and that's when our deal went funky.

- Mm hmm. - 'Cause obviously like

I explained the team around us basically ended up

stealing everyone's money

so there were a lot of different people that were

casualties of that particular moment.

- Okay.

So basically then that's when your life

kind of turned into a country song a little bit.

- I guess. - Yeah, I mean,

you guys were just primed to enter the world

of country music.

Now at that time, had American country music

made its way into England?

- Slightly, yeah, we were listening

to very early Rascal Flatts. - Mm hmm.

- And very early Keith Urban records.

You know.

And kind of prior to that as well our mum

would always buy a lot of cassettes and CDs anyway

so we knew Hal Ketchum, George Strait, The Eagles

and Crosby, Stills, and Nash

and all that kind of thing.

Anyway so we were kind of brought up on that

and then as it got into the early 2000s it was

Rascal Flatts and all these harmony kind of type groups.

- What made you say alright,

this year is the year, we're gonna go do something

and The X Factor presented itself?

- It was a weird scenario, really.

We'd been to LA in 2012 and we made a record with Steve Dorf

and basically it came out great and we were really,

really happy with it and then we came back to England

to try and promote it

but it's hard for a band like us

and we're trying to promote American-sounding music

in the UK, kind of very naive to it all, really.

And we kinda put that stuff online and it was

basically Sony, The X Factor kind of camp,

basically they saw it online and they gave me a call

and they went, "Can you come to the offices?"

And I went, "We've got a record deal!"

(laughing)

Like that's what I thought straight away.

- Yeah.

- So basically we went and we got dressed up

and booted and all that, went up there and stuff

and they said, "Absolutely love your music,

"we love the fact that you're brothers,

"we love the fact that you've got a backstory

"and you were a pop band back in the day,

"but would you do X Factor?"

And we at the time went oh no, terrible show.

(laughing)

We didn't know the connection.

Not knowing that I'm sitting in the offices

of The X Factor.

- No I didn't mean that, sorry mate.

- No, I didn't mean that, you know.

(laughing)

Well we could do it, I guess.

So it was like you know well we can kind of

you don't have to audition so much,

you can just go on the show and do your thing.

So they said sing whatever you wanna sing

and it's fine.

So that's when we dug that song out, Can't Find Me

that we wrote with our mum like literally

10 years prior to that.

And kind of reworked it and sang it on the show.

So anyway so this is the actual song

that brought us to Nashville,

so we ended up basically writing this with our mum

back in 2003 and before that we had a bit of a pop career.

(guitar music)

We was on tour with Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys

and it was crazy, we got a record deal,

we got assigned to the Spice Girls manager

and basically after two years of doing that

we got ripped off for many millions of pounds

and Mum and Dad lost the house and we had massive tax bills

and so after that we always continued

our love for music and we ended up writing lots of songs

with our mum, she would write the lyrics

'cause we had no experience in life.

(laughs)

And we just put the music to it.

And so we wrote this song together called Can't Find Me.

Many years later we ended up singing it

on The X Factor in the UK

where Sharon Osborne and Nicole Scherzinger

were crying their eyes out

and they were like, "Oh my god, you're so Nashville!"

And so, yeah, you should get to Nashville.

I'm like I have no idea where that is,

that's another planet.

- What does it mean?

Don't know what it means.

- So basically six months later after The X Factor ended,

we ended up on a Disney cruise ship and basically,

yeah, ended up on a Disney cruise ship and

got found by two people who brought us to Nashville.

And they introduced us to John McBride

and then we sang to Dan Hough and in the last two years

we've been busy in Nashville cowriting a lot.

We've played the Rye Man, we've played Franklin Theater,

we've played Bridgestone, and it's been

an incredible journey so far in the last two years.

So I wanna thank Nashville,

I wanna thank the United States of America.

- Yes, thank you. - For welcoming us.

(cheering and applauding)

- Thank you. - Us three Brits.

Gonna play some country music for you.

(laughs) - Thank you.

- Hope we do it justice. - Yeah.
