Bringing you live performances by the best artists

And now, from Studio A in the legendary FAME Studios

it's Muscle Shoals to Music Row Live.

- Ladies and gentlemen welcome.

(audience clapping and cheering)

I am your host M. Fletcher Brown.

Another night of music from the historic FAME Studios,

Studio A, here Alabama Avenue and Muscle Shoals.

We are Muscle Shoals to Music Row Live.

We have three amazing singer songwriters

on our program tonight.

To my right, returning champion,

a face we haven't seen on Muscle Shoals Music Row Live

in a while, all the way from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

He's had hits and cuts with the likes

of Tracy Lawrence and Trace Adkins,

please welcome returning

to Muscle Shoals to Music Row Live, Rick Huckaby.

(audience cheering and screaming)

- Thank you, thank you for that.

- To my left, from the great state of Mississippi,

Pascagoula, Mississippi in fact, he's worked with the likes

of Chris Janson and we're gonna learn

a lot about him tonight,

please welcome for his first time

on Muscle Shoals to Music Row Live,

songwriter, Brent Anderson.

(audience cheering and clapping)

- Yeah, thank you.

- Kicking off our program tonight,

he's recently had a number one hit with Morgan Wallen,

you are going to hear on this show tonight.

All the way from, yes, Baton Rouge, Louisiana,

the other Louisiana native,

please welcome for his first time to Muscle Shoals

Dude that sounded awesome, man.

I'm gonna do a song here that I'm in a blues band

called Big Shoes in Nashville and we've had the honor

of coming down here to Muscle Shoals

and playing a couple of times.

Will McFarlane is one of our guitar players, lives here.

Will's a masterful guitar player

We love coming down here and hopefully we get to do it

a few more times.

But this is a song that I had on a Solar record a while back

and when Big Shoes got together to make our second record,

I thought that I got this song that might fit

this kind of treatment, kind of what we were looking for,

kind of that Muscle Shoals

kind of thing we were looking for.

So I had this song in my back pocket

and man am I glad that I brought it to their attention

I wrote this song several years ago with a good friend

Paul's a legendary songwriter and he had this idea

and it was really funny.

He mailed me this lyric.

Instead of just hooking up or something.

He said I'm gonna send something to you in the mail.

I say okay sure, why not?

We live twenty miles from each other, but whatever.

So the title of the song is called In my Room.

And I thought man, that's pretty cool.

So I got it and it was one of the best just lyrics

that I thought was really cool.

He's got a real gift for that.

So I'd been working on this musical thing

and not really sure what to do with it,

so when he sent me that, I just thought,

man I'm gonna give this a try with that and see if it works.

So I'm glad I did.

- You had mentioned that Up Down was a song

that you'd had for a while,

and that you had had some trouble

when you were shopping it around

because people were saying it's maybe,

it felt a little too country for

what the sound was at the moment.

- Yeah, so I wrote that sound

with Michael Hardy and Brad Clawson,

two of my good buddies.

And me and Michael play a lot of music together

and were writing once a week for the last couple of years

and we were writing a lot of songs in that vein

that were like really country living,

country life kind of songs,

and a lot of the people that we worked with

and then we were hearing from them

that A and R people were saying that

they were like too country for

what a lot of people are recording.

They were like oh, the big artists at the top,

they don't relate to nine to five

and sitting around fishing or whatever.

That's what they, so we were like,

man I don't know this seems like the stuff

that the fans are really gonna connect with

and I was in Morgan and the FGL guys felt that with Up Down,

so it's crazy that they ended up recording that song.

(crowd cheering and clapping)

- Thank you, thank you.

A new artist named Morgan Wallen, awesome dude,

was really cool Florida Georgia Line,

hopped on this song with him and just added a whole

'nother cool factor to it, pretty crazy.

This song's probably about three years old

at this point too and back then we were just writing

a lot of songs about drinking beer and hanging out.

It's kind of funny, we was like,

man these songs are too country for what's on the radio

right now, at least lyrically.

(CJ laughing)

I was like, man there's still people out there that fish,

and drink beer, right?

Am I wrong?

So anyway, so fortunately this sound kind of found a home

and it's, they did an amazing job with the record.

(audience cheering and clapping)

- Thank you.

- Yeah buddy.

(audience whistling)

- So now you're currently signed with Sea Gayle

which is Brad Paisley's company

which is part of Arista records correct?

- Well their label side,

they have an imprint underneath Arista as a record label,

but their publishing side is owned by Brad Paisley

and Chris DuBois.

They started that company together 18, 19 years ago,

long time ago whenever Brad's first single was coming out.

And I've been there for nine years now.

It's crazy to think about.

- So when did that, how did that actually come,

did Brad Paisley hear you?

Or Chris or?

- No I was writing

for a different publishing company at the time

and they decided to let go of my deal and not pick me up.

I remember freaking out.

I didn't know how I was gonna make a jeep payment.

And I really didn't wanna go back to my parents.

I mean I was 21 at the time, 20, age 20

and I just felt like that's a wrong move, so.

I was supposed to write with Chris DuBois.

I've been writing with my good bud and he showed up

like a freaking knight on a white steed

and signed me that deal and I mean gave me a check

long before I'd signed anything

just so I could cover my bills.

I mean I owe both Chris and Brad a lot.

Brad through the years has cut a lot of songs of mine

and let me sing backgrounds on a few of his records

and played with him shows and on TV and I owe both

of those men a whole lot.

- You wrote with Brad the single

Last Time for Everything.

Is that correct?

- I did.

Yes sir.

Him and a few other buddies.

It kind of, it was a strange writing process.

We started in some place and we tried

a few different combinations and ended up with this thing

that we got and I'm very happy to have it.

- Thank you.

Thank you so much.

- Brent Anderson everybody.

- And when I say that Rick Huckaby's got his name

on songs that you know, tonight he played Beer with Jesus,

which was the first time I remember hearing Thomas Rhett

was that song and it made, it made quite an impact.

Because that was one of those reactions songs.

That was one of those that songs that people called in

and go what did he just say,

that kind of thing.

And your music from,

even when you're just writing songs

about falling in love with a girl

like In My Room, or In a Flag Top, or something like that,

Beer with Jesus, you sort of have a really kind of

deep philosophical side to you.

Is that on purpose or does it just kind of

come out that way?

- Well I suppose on that one

it just came out that way.

Thomas and I talked about that idea

and we wrote it with another friend

of ours named Lance Miller.

And we talked about that idea and I said,

man we can do this.

Let's just go for it.

I was really surprised that it was a single,

but that song was hugely instrumental in getting

Thomas a record deal.

And when they put it out as a single,

I was really proud because at that particular time,

there wasn't anything like that on the radio,

so, and who doesn't like hearing their song

on the radio man, yeah.

So thanks for playing it by the way.
