>>> FROM THE WORLD'S LEADING

CENTER FOR FINANCE, THE ARTS

PUBLISHING, RESEARCH, MEDIA,

INNOVATIONS AND MORE

THIS IS "METROFOCUS.

>>> TONIGHT, THE SECRET WORLD OF

STEAM.

NEW YORK CITY STEAM SYSTEM WAS

THEY EVER BUILT, IT WOULD BE A

VERY DIFFERENT CITY THAN IT IS

RIGHT NOW.

>> WE ASK AND DR. RUTH ANSWERS

>> YOU HAVE TO GET THEM TO

FOLLOW YOU

AND YOU CAN ONLY DO THAT B

BEING BIGGER THAN LIFE

>> AND A SURPRISING LOOK BACK AT

NEW YORK IN THE DISCO ERA.

>> I SAW AN IMAGE IN MY NEGATIVE

AND SAID MATCH THAT.

>> FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM IS

FOUNDATION

MADE POSSIBLE BY THE FOR

WORKING WITH VISIONARIES O

CORPORATE CHANGE WORLDWIDE

CORPORATE FUNDING PROVIDED BY --

>>> EVER WONDER WHY THERE AR

ORANGE AND WHITE PIPES WIT

STEAM POURING OUT OF THEM ON NEW

YORK STREETS

THERE ARE 105 MILES OF STEAM

PIPESRUNNING BENEATH TH

ISLAND

AND WHEN THEY NEED REPAIR,

CHIMNEYS ARE INSTALLED T

PROTECT WORKERS.

HOW DOES IT WORK

THE LIVING CITY VIDEO SERIES

CONTINUES NOW WITH PART FOUR

STEAM.

>> OUT OF THE 105 MILES OF

PIPING, THE BILLIO BUILDINGS USE

STEAM.

>> HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE STEAM

SYSTEM, THE SKYLINE WOULD BE

TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

YOU'D BE LOOKING AT EVERY ONE OF

THESE HIGH RISES WITH SOME TYP

OF CHIMNEY COMING OUT OF IT.

>> WHEN YOU GO TO A RESTAURANT

THE DISHWASHER IS POWERED BY NEW

YORK CITY'S STEAM.

WHEN YOU GO TO A HOSPITAL, THE

AIR IS HUMIDIFIED WITH DISTRIC

STEAM.

>> STEAM ALLOWS US TO VERY

CLOSELY MODERATE THE RELATIV

HUMIDITY IN THE GALLERY BOTH FOR

THE LONG TERM PRESERVATION O

OUR OWN COLLECTION AND FOR WORKS

ENTRUSTED TO US ON LOAN.

>> WHEN WE ACTUALLY HAVE IT,

WE'LL KEEP IT UP TO ABOUT 10

DEGREES.

SO WE USE THE STEAM TO CIRCULATE

THROUGH AND HEAT UP THE PRODUCT.

>> ONE OF THE UNIQUENESS ABOUT

NEW YORK STEAM SYSTEM IS THA

IT'S THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.

IF YOU TOOK THE NEXT NINE TEAM

SYSTEMS AND ADDED THEM TOGETHER,

NEW YORK STEAM SYSTEM IS TEL

STILL THE LARGEST.

>> WE HAVE A PRETTY ACTIVE

COMPLEX.

WE PRODUCE STEAM AND ELECTRIC TO

55% OF ALL STEAM

BIG BOILERS HEAT UP THE STEA

AND THAT GETS DISTRIBUTE

OUTSIDE THE PLANT WITH THESE

BIG, BIG PIPES AND IT TRAVERSE

OUT OF THE PLANT AND DOW

UNDERNEATH THE STREETS O

MANHATTAN.

>> A QUICK TOUR OF WHAT TH

STEAM LINES DO

THIS IS ABOUT 90 DEGREES, ABOU

90% HUMIDITY

THIS IS A TYPICAL STEAM ROOM

WE HAVE STEAM FLOWING OVER HERE.

MESSY BUSINESS

THIS IS WHERE CON ED COMES IN,

COMES ACROSS HERE, ALL THESE

METERS

AND IT FEEDS THIS HEADER OVE

HERE

SO ALL THE STEAM GETS FED OUT TO

ALL THE DIFFERENT PLACES

>> THAT STEAM HAS A LOT OF

ENERGY

IT RISES UP THROUGH TH

BUILDING

AND THEN GETS DISTRIBUTED TO

INDIVIDUAL ROOMS THROUGHOUT TH

BUILDING FOR HEATING, FO

COOLING.

AIR CONDITIONING

>> INSTEAD OF DRIVING A MOTOR ON

AN AIR CONDITIONER WIT

ELECTRICITY, YOU COULD USE

STEAM.

SO STEAM ACTUALLY OFFSETS A LO

OF THE ELECTRIC DEMANDS IN THE

SUMMER BY PROVIDING COOLIN

POWER TO BUILDINGS

>> NORG CITY'S FIRST STEAM

SYSTEM WAS BUILT BY WALLAC

ANDREWS.

IN 1881, THE PLANT OPENED UP AND

WITHIN FOUR YEAR, THEY HAD OVE

350 CUSTOMERS IN PLACE IN LOWE

MANHATTAN.

AFTER THE BLIZZARD OF 1888 WHICH

DESTROYED ALL THE ABOVE GROUND

WIRE, THEY FINALLY AGREED TO A

UNDERGROUND SYSTEM

>> AS THEY LAID THE ELECTRICIT

CABLES, THEY LAY THE STEAM PIP

DOWN AND EXCEPTIONALLY BUILT NEW

YORK CITY AROUND ELECTRICITY AND

STEAM COMING INTO ALL THE LARG

COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL

BUILDINGS STARTING WITH LOWE

MANHATTAN AND AS MIDTOWN WAS

BUILT, THEY BUILT STEAM AN

ELECTRICITY COMING INTO TH

BASEMENT OF EACH OF TH

BUILDINGS.

>> BY THE 1920s AND '30s, IT

REACHED OVER 100,000 COMMERCIA

AND RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS.

>> WE REALLY APPLIED A LOT O

REALLY NEAT SCIENCES TO TH

FUTURE OF STEAM NOW COMPARED T

IN THE PAST.

IN THE PAST, IT WASN'T A

EFFICIENT AS IT NOW.

RIGHT NOW WE MONITOR A TON O

PARAMETERS THAT CAN CREATE IT IN

THE STEAM.

>> MY WIFE AND I WERE IN OUR

APARTMENT ON THE THIRD FLOOR AND

THE BUILDING STARTED TO VIBRAT

AND THERE WAS AN INCREDIBL

LARGE ROARING NOISE.

SOMEBODY FIGURED OUT THAT TH

STEAM PIPE HAD EXPLODED.

>> IT COLLAPSES AT AN INCREDIBLY

HIGH RATE AND CREATES WATE

HAMMER

AND THAT'S THE FORCE THAT BLEW

APART THE LINE

>> I CAME THROUGH GRAND CENTRA

STATION.

AS I LOOKED SOUTH, I HEARD THI

HUGE NOISE AND SAW ALL SORTS O

CHAOS.

>> SO 2007 WAS AGAIN AN ANOMAL

IN BOTH THESE INCIDENTS AR

UNIQUE

THEY HAVE CHAINED PRETTY MUC

CHANGED PRETTY MUCH EVER

ASPECT

>> STEAM IS THROUGHOUT THE CIT

AND IT'S USED FOR A TREMENDOUS

AMOUNT OF REASONS.

NYU, FIRST YEAR SAVINGS WA

AROUND $5 MILLION.

SO THERE WAS AN IMMEDIAT

SAVINGS BY PRODUCING OUR OWN

POWER.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

BECAUSE THE PLANT IS MUCH MORE

EFFICIENT AND MUCH GREENER WER

TREMENDOUS, AS WELL, OVER 30

REDUCTION IN EMISSIONS

FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND

ENVIRONMENTAL REASONS, AND ALS

RESILIENCY REASONS, HAVING

ON-SITE SMALLER CO-GENERATIO

PLANTS AROUND THE CITY MAKES U

A GREENER CITY, MAKES US A MOR

RESILIENT CITY

>> WE'RE USING ENGINEERING T

MAKE A MORE COMFORTABLE LIFE FOR

PEOPLE IN OUR SOCIETY.

>> WE PRETEND WE'RE IN A

PARALLEL UNIVERSE AND THE NE

YORK CITY STEAM SYSTEM WAS NEVER

BUILT, IT WOULD BE A VER

DIFFERENT CITY THAN IT IS NOW.

>>> ASK DR. RUT.

RUTH

IF YOU LISTENED TO THE RADIO I

THE '80s, YOU MIGHT HAVE FOUND

THE SEX ADVICE SHOCKING.

DOCTOR HER FRANK TALK AND DIRECT

ADVICE MAY NOT RAISE MAN

EYEBROWS, BUT IT IS STIL

AVAILABLE ON TWITTER ARE

YOUTUBE AND IN PERSON.

JOINING ME NOW, DR. RUTH STILL

GOING STRONG AT 86 AND ABOUT T

DELIVER A LECTURE AT RUTGERS

UNIVERSITY ON OCTOBER 22

DR. RUTH, WELCOME.

>> I LOVE THAT YOU RAISED YOUR

EYEBROWS

>> AS I SAID, YOU'RE ON TWITTER,

YOUTUBE, SOCIAL MEDIA.

OBVIOUSLY YOU HAVEN'T RETIRED.

WHY?

>> GOODS FORBID NOT TO RETIRE.

I'M TEACHING RIGHT NOW, MY THIRD

YEAR AT COLUMBIA

OF COURSE ON THE MEDIA

I TAUGHT SIX YEARS YALE AND P WE

ARE VERY GOOD FRIENDS.

AND RICHARD KNEW THAT I TOLD HIM

WILL A TERM I USE EVERY DAY, NOT

RETIRE, BUT TO REWIRE.

AND THAT WAS HIS MOTTO, ALSO

HE PASSED AWAY AND IT'S

DIFFERENT STORY, BUT I'M VERY,

VERY HONORED TO DO THAT FIRS

LECTURE.

I WOULD HAVE LIKED HIM TO SI

THERE BECAUSE HE HAD A WONDERFUL

SMILE.

ALMOST LIKE YOU.

>> THANK YOU

AND YOU WERE ON HIS SHOW MAN

TIMES AND ONE TIME YOU SAID THAT

WHILE THE WAY PEOPLE TALKE

ABOUT SEX TO YOU ON YOUR RADIO

PROGRAM HAD CHANGED OVER THE

YEARS, THE ISSUES HAD NO

CHANGED.

IN THIS AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AN

THE iPHONE, HAVE THE ISSUE

FINALLY CHANGED?

>> I TELLYOU WHAT HAS CHANGED.

PROBLEMS HAVE NOT CHANGED.

THERE IS STILL BOREDOM IN TH

BEDROOM, THERE IS STIL

CHEATING, THERE IS STILL ALL O

THE OTHER ISSUES THAT I'VE DEALT

WITH MY ENTIRE LIFE.

WHAT HAS CHANGED IS TH

VOCABULARY

NOBODY TELLS ME ANYMORE SHE IS

WITH CHILD

THE LANGUAGE HAS CHANGED

TO SOME EXTENT, THAT'S

WONDERFUL.

ON THE OTHER HAND, TO SOME

EXTENT IT'S VERY SAD

BECAUSE I'M OLD FASHIONED AND

SQUARE AND FROM EUROPE

AND I DON'T LIKE THAT VERY MAN

PEOPLE, NOT JUST THE YOUNG, US

FOUR LETTER WORDS INSTEAD OF

LOOKING FOR A WORD THAT FITS THE

SENTENCE

SO IN THAT RESPECT, IT'S SAD

ON THE GOOD SIDE IS THAT PEOPL

HAVE LEARNED, I'M NOT THE ONLY

ONE, LOTS OF PEOPLE TALK ABOUT

SEX, THEY HAVE LEARNED THAT AN

SEXUAL ISSUE CAN BE HELPED WIT

A SEX THERAPIST, EVEN WITH

BOOKS.

LESS WOMEN HAVE NO SEXUA

SATISFACTION BECAUSE OF PEOPLE

LIKE RICHARD AND NOW YOU AND M

TALKING ABOUT IT

THERE USED TO BE MANY MORE WOMEN

WHO JUST DIDN'T HAVE ORGASMS

>> HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT THERE

IS SO MUCH MORE SEX ON

TELEVISION AND THE INTERNET NO

A DAYS

DOES THAT EXPLAIN WHY PEOPLE ARE

MORE SAVVY ABOUT SEX AND BECAUSE

PEOPLE ARE MORE SAVVY ABOUT SEX,

DO WE STILL NEED A PROGRAM LIK

YOU HAD, A PROGRAM WHERE PEOPL

TALK ABOUT HUMAN SEXUALITY

>> PERFECT QUESTION.

YES.

AND THE ANSWER IS THAT EVERY

SITUATION IS DIFFERENT

SO FOR EXAMPLE, I STILL GE

QUESTIONS OF SOMEBODY HAVING A

AFFAIR AND SHE CAN'T EVER SE

THE FELLOW -- THEY LOVE EACH

OTHER THREE YEARS, SHE CAN NEVER

SEE HIM ON WEEKENDS.

SO I SAY IS HE TAKING CARE O

ILL PARENTS?

NO

IS HE WORKING?

NO

IS HE MARRIED?

SHE SAYS YES AND I PUT ON TH

ONLY SONG THAT I'VE EVER USED,

I'M GOING TO WASH THAT MAN RIGHT

OUT OF MY HAIR

SEND HIM ON HIS WAY.

I ALSO DID SOME THINGS WHERE

MAYBE OTHER PEOPLE DIDN'T DO

I MADE HER CALL ME BACK THRE

WEEKS LATER ON A PRIVATE LINE TO

TELL ME THAT SHE ENDED THE

RELATIONSHIP

SO THE PROBLEMS ARE STILL THERE.

>> YOU RECENTLY TWEETED THIS

CAN iPHONE 6 MAKE YOU SEXIER

YOU ANSWERED NOT IF YOU TAKE T

BED WITH YOU

>> THAT'S A PERFECT EXAMPLE.

I ALSO SAY DON'T LISTEN TO MUSIC

WHILE MAKING SEX

CONCENTRATE ON WHAT YOU'RE DOING

AND THEN LISTEN TO THE MUSIC

LATER.

>> WELL, DR. RUTH, THANK YOU S

MUCH

IT'S BEEN A REAL HONOR AND A

PLEASURE

>> THANK YOU

>>> NEW YORK CITY MAYORS TEND TO

GET A LOT OF ATTENTION, BU

PERHAPS NO MAYOR MANAGED T

DOMINATE THE NATIONAL AN

INTERNATIONAL STAGE AS ED KOCH

DID DURING HIS YEARS IN OFFICE

THE FILM KOCH IS AN INTIMATE

PORTRAIT AND A CHRONICLE OF HI

MANY PUBLIC STRUGGLES TO

TRANSFORM A CITY ON THE VERGE OF

COLLAPSE

HERE IS A PREVIEW.

>> THERE WAS THE CITY LAID OUT

AND I THOUGHT TO MYSELF THIS

BELONGS TO ME.

1977, THE CITY WAS ON THE VERG

OF BANKRUPTCY.

BUSINESSES WERE LEAVING,

FAMILIES WERE LEAVING.

ANYBODY WHO COULD LEAVE WOULD.

>> GOOD MORNING, I'M ED KOCH AND

I'M RUNNING FOR MAYOR AND I NEED

YOUR HELP.

>> HERE WAS A GUY WHO REALLY

REPRESENTED A ROUGH AND TUMBLE

OF NEW YORK.

AND HE HAD ONE HELL OF A

PERSONALITY.

>> I KNEW MORE THAN THEY KNEW.

>> WHY HAVE YOU NEVER MARRIED?

>> I THOUGHT WOULDN'T IT B

WONDERFUL TO BE MARRIED.

>> YOU HAVE TO GET THE ATTENTION

OF THE PUBLIC.

YOU HAVE TO GET THEM TO FOLLOW

YOU.

AND YOU CAN ONLY DO THAT B

BEING BIGGER THAN LIFE

>> HE'S A NATIONAL FIGURE.

WHAT HE SAYS MATTERS O

EVERYTHING

>> LAST TIME I WAS IN AN

ELEVATOR, I PAID ON TH

GOVERNOR

>> KOCH HAS LIVED HIS LIFE I

THE PUBLIC

>> AM I DOING ALL RIGHT?

HI, EVERYBODY.

>> I THINK IT'S HIS OXYGEN

>> AND JOINING ME NOW IS THE

DIRECTOR OF KOCH

NEAL, WELCOME.

>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH

>> KOCH WAS YOUR FIRST FILM.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ED KOCH A

THE SUBJECT?

>> I'M A NEW YORKER.

I GREW UP WHEN KOCH WAS MAYOR.

AND OVER TIME, I GREW TO

APPRECIATE TWO THINGS.

NUMBER ONE, HOW DEFINITE

INVESTIGATION STATED THE CIT

WAS BACK THEN AND YOU HOW NONE

OF US EXPECTED THE CITY OF 201

BACK THEN.

AND, TWO, EVEN THOUGH THE CITY

WAS HORRIBLE, I BELIEVE TH

SEEDS OF OUR RECOVERY WERE

PLANTED UNDER HIS TERM

>> SO WHAT WERE THE SUCCESSES?

>> I DO BELIEVE HOUSING WAS TH

LARGEST REBUILDING OF THE CITY

IN THE HISTORY OF THE COUNTRY,

SO I DON'T THINK HE GOT ENOUGH

CREDIT FOR THAT.

WE WERE THE FIRST CITY IN 1978

TO PASS A GAY RIGHTS BILL.

IT WAS ONLY INVOLVING CITY

CONTRACTS.

BUT HE WAS VERY OUT FRONT IN

THAT

AT THE SAME TIME, HE HAD A LOT

OF ISSUES WITH THE GAY COMMUNITY

BECAUSE OF THE SLOWNESS OF

ADDRESSING THE AIDS CRISIS

HE BATTLED THE AFRICAN AMERICA

COMMUNITY.

SO I WON'T SAY THAT HIS RECORD

IS UNBLEMISHED

I THINK IT WAS BLEMISHED BY HI

INABILITY TO MAKE PEACE.

HE WAS VERY GOOD AT SAYING NO.

HE HAD A HARD TIME SAYING YE

HE

THE CORRUPTION SCANDALS.

>> HIS LAST TERM WAS MIRED B

DID THAT BRING HIM DOWN?

>> HE CONTEMPLATED SUICIDE

>> WAS HE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT

CORRUPTION BY MAKING DEALS WIT

THE BOSSES OF THE CITY

>> >> HE WAS NOT CORRUPT

HE WAS A THOROUGHLY HONEST MAN

I KNEW HIS WORD WAS HIS BOND

THAT SAID, HE MADE DEALS THA

ARE JUST OLD SCHOOL POLITICA

DEALS THAT CAME BACK TO HAUN

HIM.

I WON'T SAY SOMEBODY TURNED

BLIND EYE.

I THINK HE MAY HAVE BEEN BLINDED

BY THE DEALS HE MADE

SO HE WAS NOT PERSONALLY

CORRUPT.

HE WAS BETRAYED.

BUT, YES, I FEEL HE SHARED SOM

OF THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR TH

CORRUPTION

>> I HAD A CHANCE TO INTERVIEW

THE MAYOR JUST A FEW MONTH

BEFORE HE PASSED

AND I ASKED HIM ABOUT NEW YORK

CITY MAYORAL ELECTIONS ABOUT A

YEAR AWAY THEN

I'D LIKE TO GET YOUR RESPONSE TO

HIS ANSWER

SO IF WE COULD, LET'S TAKE A

LOOK AT THAT

>> I CHANGED NEW YORK.

BEFORE ME, IT WAS A RADICAL LEFT

WING TOWN BEING DESTROYED BY THE

UNIONS AND THEIR DEMANDS FOR

PENSIONS AND WAGES AND SO FORTH.

AND IT BROUGHT US TO THE EDGE OF

BANKRUPTCY

NOW WE'RE A TOWER OF STRENGT

AGAIN, BUT I WORRY ABOUT THE

IMPACT OF THOSE SAME UNIONS WH

ARE NOW MAKING DEMANDS ON ALL OF

THE CANDIDATES WHO ARE RUNNING

>> HOW DO YOU THINK THE MAYO

WOULD HAVE RESPONDED TO TH

THEME OF NEW YORK AS A TALE OF

TWO CITIES AND THE APPAREN

RETURN TO THE LEFT

>> I THINK HE DIDN'T RUN O

RHETORIC

HIS RHETORIC WAS MORE STRIDENT

THE ACTUAL POLICIES, WOULD H

HAVE MADE SIMILAR DEALS THAT THE

HAIR HAS MADE, I SUSPECT YES

SOMETIMES HE MADE DEALS THAT

WERE TOUGH ON THE UNION,

SOMETIMES HE MADE ALLIES WIT

THE UNIONS

THE OTHER END OF THE DAY, THES

ARE POLITICIANS.

BUT MAYOR KOCH DID NOT DECLARE

WAR ON RICH PEOPLE

WHEN HE FIRST GOT TO OFFICE, H

SAID THERE'S POTHOLE

EVERYWHERE

PAVE PARK AVENUE FIRST BECAUSE

THAT'S WHERE THE RICH LIVE AND I

DON'T WANT THEM TO LEAVE

THAT'S VERY CANDID

HE UNDERSTAND STOOD IN THOSE

DAYS WE HAD TO KEEP THE TA

BASE

BUT HE SHUNNED RHETORIC.

HE DIDN'T SHUN CONTRADICTIONS.

>> WHAT ISSUE THAT DOGGED HIM IS

THE ISSUE OF HIS SEXUALITY

WHETHER OR NOT HE WAS GAY.

AND TO HIS DEATH, HE REFUSED T

ANSWER IT.

WHY?

>> I THINK HE FELT THAT WHEN H

WAS A YOUNG POLITICIAN, SO MUC

WAS MADE OF IT, A LOT OF UNDER

THE TABLE STUFF, BY ALL OF HIS

ENEMIES.

I FEEL HE FELT LIKE HE DID NOT

WANT TO CAPITULATE TO THE PEOPLE

WHO HAD RAKED HIM OVER THE COALS

WHEN HE WAS RUNNING FOR MAYO

AND BEFORE HE WAS RUNNING FO

MAYOR.

THAT'S MY INTERPRETATION

I DON'T HAVE THE ANSWER.

HE SAID IN THE FILM IT'S NONE OF

YOUR BLANK BUSINESS AND I THIN

HE FELT BEING DEFIANT WAS MORE

APPROPRIATE.

UNDERSTAND THIS IS A MAN WHO WAS

BORN IN THE 1920s.

WERE HE GAY, I DON'T EVEN KNOW

HE COULD BE GAY OR HE COULD BE

MAYOR.

HE COULDN'T BE BOTH.

AND THIS WAS A VERY DIFFEREN

WORLD.

SO I THINK HE GREW UP IN ANOTHER

GENERATION

I KNOW IT WAS PAINFUL FOR HI

THAT HE HAD TO DEAL WITH THI

HIS ENTIRE CAREER, SO I THINK HE

GOT A LITTLE STUBBORN.

>> DO WE YET KNOW WHAT HIS

LASTING LEGACY WILL BE

>> I THINK WE DO

HE WAS HAPPY TO POINT OUT HE

TURNED THE CITY AROUND

HIS LEGACY IS WHETHER IT WAS

ONLY HELP OR MANY PEOPLE, WHEN

HE BECAME MAYOR, THE FACT THAT

NEW YORK WOULD REMAIN A WORL

CLASS CITY WAS HIGHLY IN DOUBT

WE HAVE TAKEN FOR GRANTED TODA

THAT WE ARE DESIRABLE AND THAT

PEOPLE CAN LIVE EVERYWHERE, THAT

CRIME RATE IS LOW, HOUSING I

GOOD

BECAUSE BACK THEN WHEN WE WERE

PLAGUED WITH ARSON, CRIME,

CRACK, AIDSAIDS, POVERTY, WITH

AL

THE NOISE, ALL THE CONFLICT,

THAT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE

TURNAWAY

>> CONGRATULATIONS ON THE FILM

THANKS FOR JOINING US.

>>> IN THE 1970s, DISCO WAS KING

A YOUNG WOMAN WITH A CAMERA DI

YOU WANTED THE DISCO SCENE, BU

A FEW YEARS AFTER THE BLACKOUT

THAT LED TO LOOTING AND RIOTING,

SHE DECIDED TO TAKE A JOB AS A

ART TEACHER IN BROOKLYN.

SHE ALSO KEPT SNAPPING PHOTOS.

A REPORT NOW ON THE PHOTOGRAPHER

AND HER NEW BOOK A TALE OF TWO

CITIES

>> SHE FIRST STEPPED OFF THE

SUBWAY AT THE INTERSECTION I

DECEMBER OF 1981

SHE WAS ABOUT TO START A

FULL-TIME JOB AS PUBLIC SCHOOL

ART TEACHER IN A NEIGHBORHOO

THAT HADN'T RECOVERED FROM THE

RIOTS.

>> ALMOST EVERYTHING WAS BOARDED

UP

IT LOOKED LIKE THERE WAS A WAR

THE WEEK BEFORE.

AND I THOUGHT PERHAPS THE OTHE

ART TEACHER WAS KILLED

THE NEIGHBORHOOD WAS

TRAUMATIZED.

UNBELIEVABLE THE RESILIENCE IN

THE CHILDREN

THOSE KIDS COMING IN EVERY DAY

AND THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL.

THEY REALLY HAD A LOT OF PRIDE

AND A LOT OF PASSION

>> AFTER YEARS OF DOCUMENTIN

THE DISCO CLUB SCENE, SH

DECIDED SHE NEEDED TO DOCUMENT

WHAT SHE WAS SEEING ON THE

STREETS OF BUSHWICK.

>> I BOUGHT A CHEAP POINT AN

SHOOT CAMERA AND JUST WALKING TO

AND FROM SCHOOL, I WOULD TAK

PICTURES OF THINGS THAT I FOUN

UPLIFTING.

I USUALLY ASK FOR PERMISSION AND

MOST PEOPLE SAY YES BECAUSE THEY

SAW I WAS RECOGNIZING SOMETHIN

FABULOUS ABOUT THEM.

CERTAINLY SAW MY SHARE OF DRUG

ADDICTS AND ALCOHOLICS

I LOOKED FOR A BUILDING OR

PEOPLE THAT TOLD A STORY

THERE WAS SO MUCH NATURAL LIGHT.

GORGEOUS NATURAL LIGHT

IT TOOK LOOKING AT THE DISCO

WORK NOW THAT I WAS IN A

ARTIFICIAL ENVIRONMENT AND YOU

WERE LIKE THIS IS A BEAUTIFU

NATURAL LIGHT.

>> IN 2007, SHE SHOWED SOME OF

THEM IN LOCAL GALLERIES AND THEN

SHE GOT AN IDEA.

>> I KNEW IMMEDIATELY IT'S A

TALE OF TWO CITIES

THIS WAS MY EXPERIENCE

AND THIS IS HOW THESE WORLDS

CAME TOGETHER.

IT WAS LIKE I SAW AN IMAGE IN MY

NEGATIVES.

NO TIME TO THINK

JUST DO IT FAST.

MATCH WITH THE GIRL IN THE

GRADUATION OUTFIT.

MATCH SET IMMEDIATELY.

I'D NEVER REALLY LOOKED THROUG

THESE AT ALL AND I WOULD SAY

THAT GOES WITH THE KIDS.

>> AS WE RETRACE THE COMMUTE

SHE'S STILL TAKING PICTURES.

>> DO YOU MIND IF I TAKE A

PICTURE?

PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW FRIENDL

PEOPLE ARE

I'M WONDERING IF HAVING BEEN A

TEACHER GAVE YOU THAT IN FOR THE

COMMUNITY.

BECAUSE SOME OF THOSE SHOTS IT

ALMOST LOOKS AS IF THE KIDS SEEM

SOMEHOW FAMILIAR WITH YOU.

>> IF YOU WERE IN A NEIGHBORHOOD

FOR A WHILE, YOU SEE KIDS GROW

UP AND YOU KNOW THE NEXT

GENERATION, COUSINS.

IT'S PART OF BEING PART OF A

SCHOOL COMMUNITY

>> SHE NEVER TIRES OF TALKIN

FAMILIES SHE CAME TO NOW

SHE NOW LIVES IN MANHATTAN, BU

SHE STILL RETURNS.

>> THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE I

CAME TO DO A JOB AND I FOUND

MYSELF -- I FOUND MYSELF
