DON'’T WORRY; I'M NOT SINGING "EVERYTHING'’S COMING UP ROSES."

[LAUGHTER]

YET.

[LAUGHTER]

MY MOTHER WAS NEVER A STAGE MOTHER.

ACTUALLY, SHE WAS THE OPPOSITE OF A STAGE MOTHER.

SHE WAS AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GYM TEACHER IN DENVER, COLORADO.

SHE STILL IS. [LAUGHTER]

THE CLOSEST THAT SHE EVER GOT TO BEING A STAGE MOTHER

IS WHEN SHE FORCED ME TO PARTICIPATE

IN KIDS'’ CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK AT THE AGE OF 6.

I HATED RUNNING. I HATED IT SO BAD.

IT WAS VERY CLEAR ON THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE

THAT I WAS MUCH MORE INTERESTED IN THE COSTUME FOR THE RACE

THAN THE ACTUAL RACE ITSELF.

[LAUGHTER]

I WANTED TO WEAR THICK, SHINY ICE-SKATING TIGHTS.

IT WAS 1992, KRISTI YAMAGUCHI HAD JUST WON THE GOLD.

I WAS INSPIRED. [LAUGHTER]

MY MOTHER TRIED TO LOVINGLY EXPLAIN TO ME

THAT THICK, SHINY ICE-SKATING TIGHTS WERE NOT GOOD

FOR RUNNING, AND THEY WERE NOT GOOD FOR FEMININE HYGIENE.

[LAUGHTER]

I'’M WEARING THEM TONIGHT.

[LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE]

THE LAST RACE THAT I EVER RAN

WAS THE 400-METER DASH.

NOW, THE 400-METER DASH IS BASICALLY A SPRINT

AROUND THE ENTIRE TRACK, AND WHEN THAT GUN WENT OFF,

I RAN AS FAST AS I POSSIBLY COULD.

I WAS DOING PRETTY GOOD UNTIL

ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH, AND THEN I HIT A WALL.

I WAS HYPERVENTILATING AND SCREAMING

AND SNOTTING AND CRYING, AND WHEN I FINALLY TURNED THE CORNER

TO SEE THE FINISH LINE, THE CROWD STARTED CLAPPING FOR ME.

THEY WERE CLAPPING BECAUSE THAT'’S WHAT YOU DO WHEN SOMEBODY

IS PAINFULLY LAST IN A RACE, BUT I DIDN'’T KNOW THAT.

I THOUGHT THEY WERE CLAPPING FOR ME...

[LAUGHTER]

AND MY THICK, SHINY ICE-SKATING TIGHTS.

SO I TURNED TO THEM

AND I WAVED.

[LAUGHTER]

MY MOM WAS WAITING FOR ME AT THE FINISH LINE

WITH A GATORADE AND A SMILE.

AND I SAID, "MOM, PLEASE, CAN I JUST SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM?"

[SIGHS] AND SHE SAID,

"I THINK IT'’S TIME."

SO WE WENT HOME, WE OPENED UP THE YELLOW PAGES,

AND WE LOOKED FOR THE NEAREST DANCE STUDIO.

AND THERE, WITH A HALF-PAGE AD,

COMPLETE WITH STARS AND TOP HAT,

WAS THE ONE, THE ONLY

KIT ANDREEÉ!

THAT'’S RIGHT, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, KIT ANDREEÉ--

K-I-T, A-N-D-R-E-E WITH AN ACCENT.

SHE WANTED TO BE FRENCH, BUT SHE WASN'’T.

[LAUGHTER]

I ENROLLED AT THE KIT ANDREEÉ DANCE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

THE SAME DAY THAT I STARTED THE SECOND GRADE.

WHEN I WALKED INTO THE LOBBY, I KNEW THAT I WAS HOME.

THERE WERE 8" x 10" GLOSSIES OF ALL THE GREATS ALL OVER

THE WALLS--LIZA, BARBRA, JUDY, FRED ASTAIRE, GENE KELLY--

AND SPRINKLED AMONGST THEM WAS MISS KIT HERSELF IN A SERIES

OF HEAD SHOTS TAKEN THROUGHOUT THE 1970s.

[LAUGHTER]

WHEN IT WAS TIME FOR MY FIRST VOICE LESSON,

MISS KIT CAME OUT TO GET ME HERSELF,

AND WHEN SHE OPENED THAT DOOR, THERE SHE WAS.

AT 4'’9", HER 5-INCH LUCITE PLATFORM HEELS

MADE HER A STATUESQUE 5'’2".

[LAUGHTER]

SHE WORE BLACK LYCRA DANCE PANTS,

A CRUELLA DeVIL T-SHIRT, SHE HAD A DIAMOND RING

THAT SPELLED "KIT" IN RUBIES, SHE HAD A RHINESTONE HEADBAND,

A PERFECTLY PLATINUM PIXIE CUT,

AND BIG OLD FALSE EYELASHES THAT ONLY BELONGED TO THE STAGE,

BUT IT WAS, LIKE, 6:00 ON A MONDAY NIGHT.

[LAUGHTER]

SHE CAME OUT AND SHE SAID, "ANNALEIGH?"

AND I RAISED MY HAND, AND FROM THAT MOMENT ON,

MISS KIT TOOK ME UNDER HER RHINESTONE-STUDDED TUXEDO JACKET

INTO THE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT.

FIRST WE STARTED WITH THE CLASSICS.

SHE GAVE ME A KARAOKE TAPE

OF "JUDY GARLAND AT CARNEGIE HALL."

YES, THERE WAS A KARAOKE TAPE

FOR "JUDY GARLAND AT CARNEGIE HALL."

[LAUGHTER]

THANK YOU, JAPAN.

[LAUGHTER]

WHEN WE GOT THROUGH THAT ONE, WE MOVED ON

TO A LIZA MINNELLI KARAOKE TAPE.

THAT ONE HAD "MAYBE THIS TIME," "CABARET,"

"CITY LIGHTS," AND "NEW YORK, NEW YORK."

"MAYBE THIS TIME" WAS ONE OF OUR FAVORITES.

IT WAS A REALLY GOOD POWER BALLAD FOR ME.

I WAS 7.

[LAUGHTER]

I ALSO DID "AS IF WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE"

FROM "SUNSET BLVD." AND I WORE A TURBAN.

[LAUGHTER]

BUT MY FAVORITE WAS WHEN A DANCE COMPETITION CAME THROUGH TOWN,

AND THEY ONLY HAD A SONG-AND-DANCE CATEGORY,

SO I HAD TO PUT A DANCE INTO THE MIDDLE OF A SONG.

SO WE PICKED "DON'’T CRY FOR ME, ARGENTINA," NATURALLY.

[LAUGHTER]

I SANG THE FIRST TWO VERSES, THEN I DID A PENCHEÉ

TO PUT THE MIC DOWN, YOU KNOW, LIKE, "AH,"

AND THEN I ROLLED AROUND ON THE FLOOR DRAMATICALLY FOR A WHILE,

DID SOME FLUID HANDS, A BACKWARDS SOMERSAULT

TO PICK UP THE MIC, AND FINISHED THE NUMBER.

IT WAS FABULOUS; I WON FIRST PLACE IN MY CATEGORY. HEH!

THANK YOU.

[CHEERING AND APPLAUSE]

I WAS THE ONLY ONE IN IT.

[LAUGHTER]

WHEN WE STARTED GOING TO DANCE COMPETITIONS,

THAT'’S WHEN I REALIZED THAT I WENT TO A SPECIAL DANCE STUDIO.

ALL OF THE OTHER DANCE STUDIOS WERE DOING GROUP LYRICALS

TO ALANIS MORISSETTE AND JEWEL SONGS, AND I WAS DOING

THE OPENING NUMBER FROM "CATS" WEARING A BLACK UNITARD

AND A FEATHER BOA AROUND MY FACE.

[LAUGHTER]

WE NEVER WON ANYTHING.

MISS KIT NOT ONLY INSTRUCTED ME ON MY PROFESSIONAL LIFE,

BUT SHE ALSO INSTRUCTED ME ON MY PERSONAL LIFE.

ONE NIGHT, SHE CALLED ME INTO HER OFFICE.

HER OFFICE HAD DUSTY ROSE CARPETS

AND DUSTY ROSE BLINDS, AN ERTE PRINT ON ONE SIDE

AND A TYNE DALY "GYPSY" POSTER ON THE OTHER

AND RACKS AND RACKS AND RACKS OF KARAOKE TAPES,

NOT A KEYBOARD IN SIGHT. [LAUGHTER]

I DIDN'’T HAVE A VOICE LESSON WITH A KEYBOARD

UNTIL I WAS, LIKE, 17 YEARS OLD AND I WAS LIKE,

"OOH, HOW LUXURIOUS!"

[LAUGHTER]

SO SHE CALLED ME IN TO HER OFFICE AND SHE SAID,

"ANNALEIGH, THERE IS GONNA COME A TIME

"WHEN YOU MEET A BOY, AND I WANT YOU TO USE PROTECTION,

"AND I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT A RAINCOAT.

DON'’T LET THEM IN."

I SAID, "OK, MISS KIT,"

AND SHE SAID, "ANNALEIGH, HOW OLD ARE YOU?"

I SAID, "MISS KIT,

I'’M 10."

[LAUGHTER]

AND SHE SAID, "OH, WE DIDN'’T NEED TO HAVE THIS TALK YET."

[LAUGHTER]

ANOTHER TIME, SHE CALLED ME IN TO HER OFFICE AND SHE SAID,

"ANNALEIGH, WHEN YOU ARE A STAR, PEOPLE LOVE YOU.

"THEY WANT TO WASH YOUR CAR FOR YOU, THEY WANT TO CLEAN

"YOUR HOUSE FOR YOU, THEY WANT TO COOK YOUR DINNER,

"THEY WANT TO GIVE YOU PRESENTS.

YOU SHOULD LET THEM DO THAT."

[LAUGHTER]

MY SOPHOMORE YEAR OF COLLEGE,

I WAS ON MY WAY TO VOICE AND SPEECH CLASS,

WHEN MY GRANDMA CALLED ME TO LET ME KNOW

THAT MISS KIT HAD PASSED AWAY.

I WAS DEVASTATED, I DIDN'’T WANT TO GO TO CLASS, BUT I THOUGHT

TO MYSELF, I'’M GOING TO A VOICE AND SPEECH CLASS

IN NEW YORK CITY AT A COLLEGE BECAUSE OF MISS KIT.

SO I WENT TO CLASS AND, YOU KNOW, WE'’RE, LIKE, DOING

A WEIRD WARM-UP WITH JAW RELEASES LIKE--[BABBLES]--

AND I STARTED WEEPING OPENLY,

AND THE CLASS THOUGHT I WAS HAVING A BREAKTHROUGH.

[LAUGHTER]

I WAS HAVING A BREAKDOWN, PEOPLE.

[LAUGHTER]

SO I RAN OUT OF CLASS, I WENT TO THE LIBRARY,

AND I PULLED OUT "JUDY GARLAND AT CARNEGIE HALL" ON VINYL

AND I SAT THERE AND I LISTENED TO THE WHOLE ALBUM.

[SIGHS]

JUDY GARLAND WAS MISS KIT'’S FAVORITE

BECAUSE SHE, TOO, WAS A LITTLE LADY

WITH A BIG VOICE AND A BROKEN HEART.

MISS KIT WAS ONE OF THE MOST EXQUISITE PERFORMERS

I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY WHOLE LIFE.

I JUST WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN TO SEE

WHAT I GOT TO SEE.

SHE'’S SO MUCH A PART OF WHO I AM

AS A PERFORMER, BUT MUCH, MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY,

SHE'’S A PART OF WHO I AM AS A PERSON.

THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SONGS THAT WE SANG

IN THAT OFFICE WITH THE DUSTY ROSE CARPETS
