Lakeshore In Studio

FULL EPISODE

Lakeshore | In Studio Stop.Drop.Rewind

Stop.Drop.Rewind combines the energy and spirit of pop-punk with elements of jazz and progressive rock. Their songs are as likely to incite a thoughtful discussion as they are a raucous sing-along.

>> Kris: Writing a catchy compelling song,

well, the thing that you said can be

like pushing your boundaries.

>> Of course, and we're trying to make songs or albums

that reward multiple listens.

So you can kind of get a little something new

every time you come back where it's like,

"Wow that's the base is going crazy there.

I had no idea.

I was just listening to the song before

and now I hear he's doing this crazy run under there."

And it's just like for a split second,

that comes out and then it goes away

and you miss it if you're not looking for it.

So the more you come back,

the more, hopefully, you'll get out of every listen.

>> One of the things with the musicianship element is like,

you have to let it be a short song

that doesn't have like a lot of stuff.

It's a good song.

Nobody cares how much stuff is going on.

That is one of the challenging elements with that.

You need to let it be short if a song is saying,

this is a short song.

>> DJ: I want the audience to have fun and the best way

to tell them "you should be having fun right now," is

by having fun.

>> If you feel nervous and you're trying

to remember all your parts and all that kind of thing,

the audience can feel that.

So if you just know your stuff and you go out there

and you let your mistakes come out,

you do whatever and just make them sound right,

then you're having fun.

>> Boy, have we done some of those?

>> That's the mission statement is to kind of push

our own personal boundaries as musicians

while not sacrificing writing good catchy, relatable music.

>> And I'm always looking for musical moments,

things that like catch you and make you go, "Oh!"

>> Like "that's why they did this."

>> Or like, "Ohh," I like those.

>> DJ: The instrumentals generally come from Kris.

I have a little bit to do with that as well.

And then I write all of the lyrics and vocal lines.

I really like it.

It makes it really easy to, you know,

be a little bit more personal.

Share a little bit more 'cause I never have to say it.

(laughing)

>> Yeah. 'Cause I don't know what he's talking half the time.

So I can sing I just give it all out there.

I don't have an English degree, like some people

but I am like a smart guy sometimes.

>> Right

>> So I can say, I will say like,

this is not gonna come across in front of the band, right?

Or like the thematically,

we should look a different direction.

We talked about that before >> It just sings better

if you say it this way, you know,

whereas I'm writing it on paper or on my phone,

looking at the lyrics and seeing what reads the best

and what reads the best doesn't always sing the best.

>> Kris: In a project that you're playing with has

to create some sort of chemistry

between the three of you, right?

And sometimes that chemistry doesn't really work.

If there has to be three different personalities

that have handled separate tasks

and are okay with handling those separate tasks,

and you're totally right that flows over

into other aspects like working with other people

and not being a jerk and accomplishing something

that you want to do.

That is every aspect of your life.

>> Part of that is just knowing your role.

>> DJ: And we'll generally bring like a verse

and a chorus or like a hook or something

to Andy and maybe a few other ideas

and he'll tell us what of our other ideas are stupid

and not working.

Then afterwards, we'll come back without the stupid things

that aren't working and we'll have pretty good song

on our hands, I think.

Is that the process in a nutshell?

>> That's probably right >> Yeah

>> DJ: Songwriting is critical thinking.

It's problem-solving.

All skills.

It's so much problem-solving.

And these are skills that you'll use it

in your life every day outside of music.

>> Synthesizing 'cause you have to put separate things

that you would not-

>> Right.

>> Like they aren't together right now,

you can figure out how to like, put together.

That's like scientific.

>> Also for a more concrete example,

I met my fiance at a stop drop rewind show

and I was like, >> I was gonna do

>> "Babe, wait!"

>> I was gonna do his feelings part.

No!

I was gonna do it.

I was like, he didn't say the thing.

Basically, everyone I've met in my life at this point.

Or if that is still like around, I have played music with

or I've met through music

or I currently make music with them.

So the three of us just hang out.
