PRODUCTION SUPPORT FOR "JOURNEY

INDIANA" IS PROVIDED BY:

>> COMING UP VISIT THE LEVI AND

KATHERINE KAUFFMAN STATE

HISTORIC SITE.

>> AND THE BROWN COUNTY ART

GUILD IN NASHVILLE.

>> AND TRAVEL TO HAEGERSTOWN TO

GO INSIDE THE BIRTH PLACE OF

WILBUR WRIGHT, INDIANA'S OWN

AVIATION PIONEER.

>> AND THE HOOSIERS HIKERS

COUNCIL.

THAT'S ALL THIS EPISODE OF

"JOURNEY INDIANA."

>> WELCOME TO "JOURNEY INDIANA,"

I'M ASHLEY CHILLA, COMING TO YOU

FROM MY HOMETOWN OF BLOOMINGTON

AT THE RECENTLY OPENED SWITCH

YARD PARK JUST STEPS AWAY FROM

THE BEE LINE CHART.

>> AND I'M BRANDON WENTZ.

I'M IN MUNCIE.

>> WE ARE FEATUROR THE BEST

RAILS TO TRAILS CONVERSIONS OVER

THE NEXT FEW EPISODES AND WE ARE

STARTING RIGHT HERE IN MONROE

COUNTY.

THE BEE LINE TRAIL WHICH OPENED

IN 2011, FOLLOWS THE FORMER MATH

OF THE MONAN RAILWAY THAT

STARTED IN CHICAGO.

IT CUTS THROUGH THE BRAND NEW

SWITCH YARD PARK WHICH IS HOME

TO AN AMPHITHEATER, SPLASH PAD,

DOG PARK AND MUCH MORE.

AND WE'LL LEARN MORE ABOUT BOTH

IN JUST A BIT, BUT FIRST, WE'RE

HEADED TO WAYNE COUNTY FOR A

LOOK INSIDE OF THE LEVI AND

KATHERINE COFFIN STATE PARK.

PRODUCER RUBEN BROWN HAS THE

STORY.

>> LEVI AND KATHERINE COFFIN ARE

BORN AND RAISED IN NEW GARDEN,

NORTH CAROLINA.

THEY ACTUALLY LEAVE NORTH

CAROLINA IN 1826, HOPING TO

START A NEW LIFE IN A STATE

WHERE SLAVERY IS NOT PROMINENT.

THEY SETTLE IN A COMMUNITY THAT

WAS THEN KNOWN AS NEWPORT,

INDIANA.

ALONG WITH THOUSANDS OF OTHER

QUAKERS THAT ARE MAKING VERY

SIMILAR DECISIONS TO MIGRATE TO

THESE MIDWESTERN STATES.

LEVI HELPS TO START A DRY GOODS

STORE TO SUPPORT HIS GROWING

FAMILY AND LIVE HERE UNTIL 1847,

BUT DURING THE ALMOST 20-YEAR

PERIOD THEY WERE HERE, THEY

IMPACTED THE LIVES EVER LIVES OF OVER 1,000

PEOPLE DUE TO SLAVERY.

YOU WERE NEVER ACTUALLY DEEMED

AS A HUMAN BEING BY LAW, YOU

WERE DEEMED AS PROPERTY.

THE TREATMENT OF THOSE

INDIVIDUALS ARE WHAT WE WOULD

SEE AS TORTURE TODAY.

IT WAS NOT UNUSUAL FOR

INDIVIDUALS TO BE WHIPPED AND

PUNISHED PHYSICALLY IF THEY ARE

NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH THEIR

LABOR.

IT'S FORCED LABOR.

IN SOME CASES YOU COULD BE

WORKED TO DEATH.

AN INDIVIDUAL THAT IS ENSLAVED

MEANT THAT ANY CHILDREN THAT

THEY HAVE ARE BORN INTO SLAVERY.

AND SO FOR INDIVIDUALS ESCAPING,

THERE'S A LOT OF UNKNOWNS.

FOR THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

DEVELOPED IN OUR AREA AS A

MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE MOVING NORTH,

MAINLY OUT OF STATES LIKE

KENTUCKY, OVER THE OHIO RIVER,

AND NORTH THROUGH OUR STATE.

THE TERM UNDERGROUND REALLY

REFERS TO THE FACT THAT HAD IS

SECRETIVE.

THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT'S

PUBLICLY SHARED IN MANY OF THESE

AREAS WHERE IT WAS VERY ACT

ENVIRONMENT.

INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED OFTEN --

ACTIVE.

INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED WERE OFTEN

REFERRED TO AS CONDUCTOR AND

HOMES WERE KNOWN AS STATIONS.

IN STATES LIKE INDIANA WHERE WE

SEE EVIDENCE OF UNDERGROUND

RAILROAD ACTIVITY, WE SEE A LOT

OF PARTICIPATION BY QUAKERS, THE

INDIVIDUALS THAT WERE MEMBERS OF

THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS, A

RELIGIOUS BODY THAT ITSELF WAS

VERY ANTISLAVERY IN SENTIMENT

AND SUPPORT.

BUT WE ALSO HAVE A TREMENDOUS

AMOUNT OF FREE BLOCKS, SOME OF

THEM FORMER SLAVES THEMSELVES

THAT ARE SETTLING IN INDIANA IN

THESE EARLY DECADES OF OUR

STATEHOOD THAT ARE DOING THEIR

BEST TO PROVIDE THEIR SUPPORT

AND RESOURCES.

LEVI AND KATHERINE COFFIN

CONNECTED TO THE IDEA NO PUT OF

THESE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS INTO

ACTION.

ANYONE WHO CAME LOOKING FOR

HELP, NEEDING, SHELTER,

CLOTHING, FOOD, MEDICAL

ASSISTANCE, THIS IS SOMETHING

THAT THE COFFINS WERE KNOWN FOR

PROVIDING.

IT'S NOT UNUSUAL TO HAVE CERTAIN

INDIVIDUALS LIKE THE CUFF COFFINS AS

SUBVERSIVE BECAUSE OF THEIR

WILLINGNESS TO BREAK THE LAW.

FROM THE 20 YEARS THAT HE WAS

LIVING IN NOWPORT, INDIANA, NEWPORT, INDIANA, THEY

POTENTIALLY HELPED AROUND 100

PER YEAR.

THE HOUSE WE WERE SITTING IN WAS

VERY ACTIVE AND INTEGRAL TO

THAT.

THE HOUSE WAS BUILT FOR THE

COFFIN FAMILY IN 1839.

IT HAS EIGHT ROOMS.

EVERY ROOM EXCEPT ONE HAS A

FIREPLACE.

WHEN LEVI BELT THE HOUSE, HE

WANTED TO HAVE A -- BUILT THE

HOUSE, HE WANTED TO HAVE A

BASEMENT KITCHEN.

THERE'S A SPRING FED WELL THAT

STILL WORKS TODAY THAT IS

SELECTING THE SPRING WATER

THAT'S PREVALENT UNDER OUR

COMMUNITY.

WHEN WE THINK ABOUT WHY THOSE

SPACES EXIST, BECAUSE PEOPLE

WOULD NOT TRADITIONALLY HAVE

WELLS IN THEIR HOMES.

THE COFFINS MAYBE WORKING TO

CONCEAL HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE IN

THE HOME AT THE SAME TIME,

BECAUSE SLAVE CATCHERS, IF THEY

DID GET INTO HOMES, THEY WILL

LOOK EVERYWHERE THEY POSSIBLY

CAN TO FIND AN INDIVIDUAL THAT

THEY ARE LOOKING FOR.

HE SPEAKS TO USING A GARRETT

SPACE, LIKE AN ATTIC OR A SPACE

UNDER THE EVES AND SO WE HAVE A

PARTICULAR SPACE LIKE THAT IN

THE HOME WHERE WE THINK 14

INDIVIDUALS WERE HIDDEN AT SOME

POINT.

PEOPLE MAKE A LOT OF

CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THE COFFIN

STORY AND THE STORY OF ANNE

FRANK.

THERE'S ANOTHER STORY OF TWO

YOUNG GIRLS WHO HAD A VERY CLOSE

CALL.

THEY WERE ALMOST FOUND, JUST

NORTH OF HERE, IN ANOTHER

COMMUNITY AND THEY WERE BROUGHT

HERE WHERE IT WAS BELIEVED TO BE

SAFER, BUT YET SOME OF THESE MEN

THAT WERE PART OF THAT PARTY

THAT ALMOST FOUND THE GIRLS

ARRIVE IN TOWN.

LEVI MENTIONS KATHERINE

CONCEALING OR HIDING THE GIRLS

BETWEEN THE MATTRESSES OF ONE OF

THE BEDS IN THE HOUSE.

ON AVERAGE, FREEDOM SEEKERS WERE

HERE NORMALLY JUST A DAY OR TWO,

EVEN THOUGH THIS IS HAPPENING

UNDER THE COVER OF DARKNESS

OFTEN, IT'S NOT UNUSUAL FOR THEM

TO USE WHAT WAS CALLED A FALSE

BOTTOM WAGON.

LEVI HAD ONE HIMSELF.

A FALSE BOTTOM WAGON MEANS

THERE'S A FALSE FLOOR, WHERE

SOMEONE OR A GROUP OF PEOPLE MAY

BE ABLE TO HIDE AND THEN ON TOP

OF THAT FALSE FLOOR AND AROUNDT.

THINGS ARE STACKED ON THE WAGON.

YOU ARE GIVING IMPRESSION THAT

THE WAGON IS FULL OF SOMETHING.

IN OUR INTERPRETIVE CENTER

EXHIBIT, ONE INDIVIDUAL THAT WE

LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT IS A MAN THAT

WE KNEW HERE IN TOWN AS WILLIAM

BUSH.

THE WOODEN SHOES HERE ACCORDING

TO THE ORAL HISTORY SURVIVED

NOTED THAT HE WAS WEARING THESE

AT THE TIME OF HIS ESCAPE AND HE

ACTUALLY AT SOME POINT IN HIS

ESCAPE WAS HIDDEN INSIDE OF A

CRATE AND WAS SHIPPED HERE TO

LEVI COFFIN.

NOT ONLY WAS HE LIVING HERE AS

AN INDIVIDUAL AND A RUNAWAY

SLAVE, AND HE WOULD GET INVOLVED

IN AIDING IN THE ESCAPE OF

OTHERS DURING THE 1850s.

NOW, RELY AND LEVI AND KATHERINE COFFIN,

WE HAVE TO APPROACH THEM AS A

COUPLE WHO ARE DOING THIS THE

TOGETHER.

KATHERINE IS A MOTHER.

SHE'S FOCUSED ON THEIR CARE AS

WELL.

LEVI AT SOME POINT DOES BECOME

KNOWN AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD.

ONE OF THE KEY THINGS TOO IS THE

FACT THAT HE'S AN ORGANIZER AND

HE'S A PUBLIC VOICE FOR BEING

INVOLVED IN THESE ACTIVITIES AND

SOMETHING LEVI WAS ABLE TO DO

WAS ALWAYS RIDE THIS VERY FINE

LINE OF BEING SEEN STILL AS A

REPUTABLE INDIVIDUAL WHO WAS

ALSO ACTIVELY BREAKING THIS

FUGITIVE SLAVE LAWS AT THE SAME

TIME.

BUT HE ALSO SUPPORTED OTHER

THINGS SUCH AS STARTING A

SCHOOL, WHICH HELPED TO SUPPORT

OFFERING HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE

LEVEL EDUCATION.

WHEN LEVI TALKS OF THE

ABOLITIONISTS COMING TO TOWN AND

VISITING WITH HIM HERE IN THE

HOUSE, ONE OF THE INDIVIDUALS

THAT LEVI SPEAKS TO WAS

FREDERICK DOUGLASS.

LEVI IS A BUSINESSPERSON.

HE UNDERSTANDS WITH THE DRY GOOD

STORE, WHEN HE'S SELLING COTTONS

GOODS, HE POTENTIALLY PUTTING

PROFIT BACK IN THE ENSLAVER IN

SOUTH.

HE CONVERTS THE STORE TO A FREE

LABOR OR FREE PRODUCE STORE.

THAT MEANS ANYTHING THAT LEVI

SOURCES TO SELL, EVEN IF IT'S

COTTON, HE'S WORKING VERY HARD

TO SOURCE IT FROM PLACES WHERE

SLAVE LABOR WAS NEVER USED TO

PRODUCE IT.

THE THOUGHT IS LET'S GET

AMERICANS TO START THINKING

ABOUT THEIR BUYING CHOICES.

WHEN WE REFLECT ON PERIODS OF

HISTORY, AND IT'S IMPORTANT, I

THINK FOR US AS HOOSIERS TO

REMEMBER EFFORTS LIKE THIS.

WE NEED TO KEEP THESE TYPES OF

HISTORIES, THREE TYPES OF

STORIES FOR A FRIEND.

SO THOSE VOICES ARE NOT LOST.

>> YOU CAN LEARN MORE AT

INDIANAMUSEUM.ORG, JUST SEARCH

FOR RELY COFFIN.

EARLIER CAUGHT UP WITH SEAN

MYLER, THE MANAGER OF SWITCH

YARD PARK TO LEARN ALL ABOUT IT

AND THE TRAIL THAT ONES RUNS THROUGH

IT.

>> THE BEE LINE, IT'S THE SPINE

OF THE TOWN IN A LOT OF WAYS AND

IT STRETCHES NORTH AND ALL THE

WAY SOUTH.

IT'S A HEAVILY TRAFFICKED AREA

JUST FOR PEOPLE TRYING TO GET

FROM POINT A. TO POINT B.

THERE'S COFFEE SHOPS AND A

GROCERY STORE AND OFFICE SPACES

UP FURTHER NORTH, BUT ALSO, IT'S

A MAJOR PLACE.

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO JUST

JOG THE BEE LINE.

PEOPLE WHO TAKE THEIR BICYCLES

ON THE BEE LINE.

THE PEOPLE WHO TAKE THEIR KIDS

ON THE BEE LINE IS REALLY SUCH A

HUGE NUMBER.

ORIGINALLY IT WAS JUST THE BEE

LINE.

EVENTUALLY WE WERE PICKING UP A

LITTLE BIT OF LAND HERE AND A

LITTLE BIT OF LAND THERE AND WE

GOT TO THE POINT WHERE WE COULD

ACTUALLY BUILD SOMETHING.

THE IDEA WAS TO THE WAS NOT JUST TO BRING

PEOPLE TO THE PARK BUT GIVE THEM

REASONS TO STAY.

THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT

ACTIVITIES THAT APPEAL TO A LOT

OF DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES FOR

YOUNGER MORE ACTIVE PEOPLE.

WE HAVE A BASKETBALL COURT.

WE HAVE A BOCHE BALL COURT AND

PICKLE BALL COURT AND THEN WE

HAVE A COMMUNITY GARDENS AND A

DOG PARK.

WE WANTED TO MAKE IT AS FLEXIBLE

AS POSSIBLE BUT TO CREATE A

SPACE WHERE PEOPLE COME AND

ENJOY IT.

WE HAVE SEEN THAT.

OUR PLAYGROUND, IT'S BEEN

EXTREMELY POPULAR, AND RIGHT

NEXT TO IT ALMOST IS THE SPRAY

PAD.

I DIDN'T EVEN MENTION THE

SKATEPARK.

IT WAS BUILT BY HUNGER SKATEPARK

WHICH IS A LOCAL GROUP.

OUTPOURING OF PEOPLE USING THAT

SECTION ALONE IS TER RIFF.

THE OVERARCHING IDEA WAS TO

CREATE AN ORGANIC SPACE THAT

DEPENDING ON -- IF YOU INCLUDE

THE BEE LINE FOR THE ACREAGE,

IT'S ABOUT 52 ACRES.

ITS A HUGE PARK AND IT'S ONE THE

LARGER PARKS IN INDIANA, PERIOD.

THIS PARK HAS BEEN GREAT NOT

JUST BECAUSE IT'S SO BIG AND SO

SPACIOUS AND IT'S GOT EVERYTHING

SO WELL BUILT, BUT IT'S SERVING

AS A FOCAL POINT FOR THE

COMMUNITY.

AND WE HAVE GOT A REAL LeNICE

PARK.

-- A REALLY NICE PARK.

IT'S REALLY GREAT.

>> YOU CAN LEARN MORE AT

BLOOMINGTON.IN.GOV.

JUST SEARCH FOR SWITCH YARD.

BRANDON?

>> THANKS, ASHLEY.

UP NEXT, WE HEAD TO NASHVILLE TO

MEET THE MEMBERS OF THE BROWN

COUNTY ART GUILD.

PRODUCER ADAM CARROLL HAS THE

STORY.

>> IN THE HEART OF THE BROWN

COUNTY SITS NASHVILLE, INDIANA,

WHERE ART AND COMMUNITY COME

TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE NATURE AND

THE SURROUNDING VISTAS.

IN 1907, THE ART COLONY WAS

FOUNDED IN NASHVILLE.

AND IN 1954, A GROUP OF

PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS CAME

TOGETHER TO FORM THE BROWN

COUNTY ART GUILD, TO TEACH,

LEARN, AND CREATE TOGETHER.

>> BROWN COUNTY WAS THE ART

MECCA OF THE MIDWEST, AND IT'S

VERY, VERY IMPORTANT ARTISTS

WERE HERE.

AND I CAN REMEMBER THE EMOTION

THAT MY PARENTS HAVE OF BEING

ABLE TO BE PART OF THIS.

>> FOUNDED BY MARIE GOFF, AND

SEVERAL OTHER ARTISTS, THE GUILD

BECAME A PRESTIGIOUS GROUP THAT

HELPED TO SHAPE ART IN THE

MIDWEST.

>> I CAN ACTUALLY REMEMBER THE

ARTISTS LOOKING AT EACH OTHER'S

PAINTINGS AND SUGGESTING WAYS TO

MAKE THEM BETTER OR WHATEVER.

AND THEY WOULD TAKE OUT A

PORTION OF THE PAINTING AND THEN

THEY WOULD LOOK AND THEY -- IT

WAS -- IT WAS ALWAYS

FASCINATING.

>> I MOVED TO BROWN COUNTY IN

THE EARLY 1980s, AND I WAS

ALREADY AN ESTABLISHED PAINTER.

I WAS LOOKING TO RELOCATE,

DIDN'T LIKE CITY LIFE.

I JUST SAW AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ME

TO LOOK AT WHAT I WAS ALREADY

DOING, AND TO BE INFLUENCED BY

SOME OF THE ART THAT WAS BEING

MADE HERE.

I'MI MET FREDERICK WRIGLEY, WE

WOULD GO OUT AND PAINT FOR HOURS

AT A TIME.

AND FREQUENTLY WE WOULD NOT TALK

THE ENTIRE TIME WE WERE

PAINTING.

BUT WHEN WE FINISHED UP, WE

WOULD GO AT EACH OTHER, GO AT

THE JUGULAR AND CRITIQUE EACH

OTHER'S WORK.

IT WAS REALLY WONDERFUL FOR BOTH

ME AND HIM TO HAVE SOMEBODY TO

BOUNCE OFF OF, SOMEBODY WHO WAS

GOING TO -- TO REALLY GO AFTER

YOU AND TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT

THEY THOUGHT ABOUT YOUR WORK.

I INFLUENCED FREDERICK, AND HE

INFLUENCED ME.

BOTH OF OUR WORK EVOLVED AND

CHANGED BECAUSE OF OUR

RELATIONSHIP.

>> THE ARTISTS LEARN AND GROW

TOGETHER, WITH THE HELP OF THE

GUILD, AND THE BEAUTY THAT IS

BROWN COUNTY.

>> LOTS OF TREES, HILLS, WITH A

LITTLE BLUE TONE OVER THEM.

THERE'S STILL REMOTE PLACES IN

BROWN COUNTY, BEAUTIFUL CREEKS,

PLACES, VISTAS WHERE THEY CAN

LOOK OUT.

>> I WAS VERY MUCH DRAWN HERE

BECAUSE OF THE WOODS, AND THE

THINGS THAT I WANTED TO PAINT

WERE LANDSCAPES AND THEMES THAT

I FOUND HERE IN BROWN COUNTY.

>> THE GUILD BUILDING AND THE

COMMUNITY THAT THE GUILD

COMMUNITY PROVIDES, ALLOWS

ARTISTS TO THRIVE AND SURVIVE.

THE GUILD LOOKS TO THE FUTURE,

WHILE CELEBRATING THEIR PAST.

>> THE GUILD PROVIDES A

WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR ME TO

BE IN A PLACE WHERE OTHER VERY

WELL-KNOWN ESTABLISHED ARTISTS.

PEOPLE COME HERE AND THEY KNOW

THEY ARE GETTING QUALITY WORK.

>> THE ARTISTS THAT ARE THERE OR

ONLY THE BEST ARTISTS THAT THEY

CAN GET.

NOW, I STILL FEEL AN ENERGY, AND

I FEEL THE ARTISTS' ENERGY.

I THINK IF YOU COULD TALK TO ANY

OF THE ARTISTS AN THEY WOULD

TELL YOU THAT THEY ARE VERY

EXCITED ABOUT THE DIRECTION WE

ARE GOING AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL

BE FOREVER.

>> YOU CAN LEARN MORE AT

FACEBOOK.COM/BROWNCOUNTYARTGUILD

UP NEXT, WE ARE HEADED TO

HAEGERSTOWN IN WESTERN WAYNE

COUNTY.

WE HAVE THE STORY.

>> AVIATION STARTED WHEN HE WAS

YOUNG.

HIS DAD BROUGHT HOME A LITTLE

DEVICE THAT WHEN YOU SPUN IT, IT

WOULD FLY.

AND FROM THAT POINT, THAT

SPARKED THOSE BOYS INTO WANTING

TO FLY.

HE WAS BORN IN 1867.

AND HE WAS BORN HERE IN

MILLVILLE, INDIANA.

WILBUR WRIGHT WAS HALF THE

WRIGHT BROTHERS WHO ACTUALLY

PIONEERED FLIGHT IN THE UNITED

STATES.

THEY WERE THE FIRST ONES THAT

PROVED THEMSELVES TO BE THE

FIRST FLYERS.

HE WAS KIND OF MISCHIEVOUS, I

GUESS WHEN HE WAS LITTLE.

HIM AND ORVILLE WOULD SNEAK OUT

TO THE BARN LOT AND TAKE SOME OF

THE EQUIPMENT APART JUST TO SEE

HOW IT WORKED.

AND THEN MS. SUSAN WRIGHT, THE

MOM WOULD ACTUALLY HAVE TO TAKE

THEM BACK TO THE FARM HOUSE THE

NEXT DAY AND PUT THE STUFF BACK

TOGETHER AND SHE WOULDN'T HELP

THEM.

THEY WOULD HAVE TO DO IT

THEMSELVES.

SO THEY WERE -- THEY WERE JUST

KIDS.

YOU KNOW?

ONERY BUT CAN IS.

ORVILLE STARTED THE NEWSPAPER

BUSINESS.

HE WAS THE EDITOR AND WILBUR

WENT ALONG WITH THEM, AND THEN

THEY WENT INTO THE BICYCLE.

IT WAS REPAIR THEM AT FIRST, AND

THEN THEY WOULD BUILD THEM.

THEY WERE GETTING READY TO GO TO

KITTY HAWK AND START FLYING OR

START TRYING TO FLY.

I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT PEOPLE WERE

SAYING ABOUT THESE TWO CRAZY

DUDES DOWN ON KITTY HAWK, BOWLER BOLER

HATS.

YOU CAN'T FLY.

THEY WOULD GO DOWN THERE WATCH

THEM WRECK.

AND TEAR UP THE PLANE AND THEY

WOULD GO BACK AND FIX IT AND DO

IT AGAIN.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT NOW, THEY

WERE HEROES AND THEY WERE JUST

SMART, SMART PEOPLE.

BACK THEN THEY WERE THOUGHT OF

AS KIND OF COOKY LIKE A LOT OF

OTHER REALLY INTELLIGENT PEOPLE

IN LIFE.

THEY WERE THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE

IN FLIGHT.

SO THE MAIN THING IS THAT THEY

WERE THE FIRST IN CONTROLLED

FLIGHT.

THEY WERE THE FIRST TO TAKE OFF,

TURN AND COME BACK.

THAT'S WHY WE THINK OF THEM AS

THE FATHERS OF AVIATION.

HIS FATHER ACTUALLY WAS REAL

ADAMANT ABOUT CLEAN WATER.

AND HE WAS ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT

MAKING THE WATER CLEAN SO THEY

WOULDN'T GET WHATEVER THE

DISEASE WAS, AND WILBUR, I THINK

MAYBE HE WAS IN FRANCE AND ATE

SOME BAD SHELLFISH AND THAT'S

WHAT HE DIED OF IN 1912.

HIS FATHER WROTE LATER WITH HIS

SON WILBUR, A SHORT LIFE FULL OF

CONSEQUENCES, AND UNFAILING

INTELLECT, MILD TEMPER, GREAT

SELF-RELIANCE AND HAS GREAT

MODESTY.

SEEING IT RIGHT CLEARLY, HE

LIVED AND DIED.

>> WELCOME TO THE BIRTH PLACE OF

WILBUR WRIGHT.

MILTON WRIGHT, WILBUR'S FATHER

PURCHASED THIS HOUSE FOR $700 IN

1865.

>> THE HOUSE HERE WHERE WILBUR

WAS BORN WAS RUN BY THE STATE

FOR YEARS AND NOW IT'S A PRIVATE

ORGANIZATION, THE WILBUR WRIGHT

FOUNDATION, AND IT ACTUALLY

BURNT TWICE, AND WAS REBUILT

THIS LAST TIME, AN EXACT REPLICA

OF THE ORIGINAL HOUSE AND

THERE'S A LOT OF THE WOOD AND

STUFF THAT IS IN IT WAS IN THE

ORIGINAL HOUSE.

AND THE REPLICA, WE HAD HERE AT

THE MUSEUM IS PROBABLY THE MOST

ACCURATE AND THE REASON I'M

SAYING THAT IS WE ACTUALLY HAVE

THE CHAIN FROM THE DIAMOND CHAIN

COMPANY IN INDIANAPOLIS,

INDIANA, AND THAT'S THE SAME

THING THAT THE WRIGHT BROTHERS

HAD ON THEIRS.

WE HAVE THE ONLY PLANE THAT HAS

THAT.

SO OURS IS THE MOST EXACT

REPLICA.

IT TOOK ABOUT 10 TO 12 YEARS TO

BUILD THE PLANE AND IT DID FLY.

IT GOT UP ABOUT 18 INCHES OFF

THE GROUND.

AND HE PUT IT BACK DOWN.

HE WAS AFRAID WOULD TEAR IT UP.

IT TOOK HIM SO LONG TO BUILD IT.

HE HAD A 13-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER

THAT ACTUALLY SEWED ALL THE

DACRON, THIS IS NOT A COTTON ON

OURS, IT'S ACTUALLY DACRON.

THE MEASURES IS 6 FEET WIDE AND

600 POUNDS.

IT HAS A FOUR CYLINDER MODER

THAT WAS DESIGNED BY THE WRIGHT

BROTHERS' MECHANIC FOR THE

ORIGINAL PLAIN.

WE HAVE A LOT OF FLIGHT HISTORY.

WE HAVE A PLACE CALLED MAIN

STREET BACK HERE.

IT LOOKED LIKE MAIN STREET IN

DAYTON.

IT SHOWSTHEIR FIRST BUSINESS WAS

A PRINTING PRESS, AND WE HAVE A

BICYCLE IN, THERE A REPLICA OF

THE BICYCLES.

IT'S REALLY A GREAT PLACE TO

READ.

WE HAVE SO MUCH READING MATERIAL

HERE.

IT'S REALLY A GEM IN THE

COUNTRY.

>> AND TO LEARN MORE, JUST HEAD

OVER TO WWW.BIRTHPLACE.COM.

>>> AND FINALLY WE LEAVE THIS

RAIL TRAIL FOR JUST A BIT AND

HEADING INTO THE WOODS TO LEARN

ABOUT TRAIL BUILDING OF A

DIFFERENT SORT.

PRODUCER CHRIS DODGE HAS MORE

BEHIND THE HOOSIERS HIKER

COUNCIL.

HOOSIER HIKERS COUNCIL WAS

FOUNDED IN 1995.

OUR MISSION IS TO BUILD,

MAINTAIN AND PROMOTE HIKING

TRAILS IN INDIANA.

WE HAVE BUILT QUITE A FEW TRAILS

IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF INDIANA,

AND WE WORK WITH LANDOWNERS TO

KEEP THE TRAILS MAINTAINED AND

WE ALSO PUT ON SPECIAL EVENTS TO

PROMOTE THE TRAILS.

WE RECENTLY FINISHED A TRAIL, A

REALLY NICE TRAIL IN MARTIN

COUNTY NEAR SHOALS.

IT'S A NATURE PRESERVE CALLED

BLUFFS OF BEAVER BEND.

IT'S ABOUT A TWO AND A HALF MILE

TRAIL, AND IT'S REALLY UNIQUE

AND DIFFERENT FOR INDIANA.

I THINK PEOPLE REALLY ENJOY THAT

TRAIL.

>> IN ADDITION TO MIKING,

CLEARING, -- HIKING, CLEARING

AND BUILDING TRAILS, THEY ALSO

BUILD SHELTERS THAT GIVE PEOPLE

REFUGE DURING PARTICULARLY LONG

HIKES OR INCLEMENT WEATHER.

>> THE SHELTER HERE IS IN MEMORY

OF ONE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS WHO

DIED.

HIS NAME WAS CHARLIE WILMERING

AND HE WAS ON OUR BOARD OF

DIRECTOR FOR A WHILE, AND HE WAS

A GREAT GUY.

HIS FAMILY DONATED SOME MONEY TO

HAVE SOMETHING DONE IN HIS

HONOR, AND IT SEEMED FITTING TO

HAVE THIS SHELTER HERE.

HE WAS VERY A VERY ACTIVE MEMBER AND

WE NAMED IT CHARLIE'S SHELTER.

>> HHC VOLUNTEERS GET INVOLVED

FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS.

>> I ALWAYS LIKED BEING OUT IN

THE WOODS AND LEARNED ABOUT THIS

GROUP SHORTLY AFTER IT STARTED,

AND ENJOYED COMING OUT TO PLACES

WHERE THERE WAS NO TRAIL YET, TO

SEE WHERE THE TRAIL WOULD BE AND

SORT OF GET A PREVIEW OF IT.

AND SEE WHAT AT THE TIME, BEFORE

THE TRAIL WAS THERE, WOULD BE

MORE OF A REMOTE AREA.

SINCE THEN, THE MORE I WORKED

WITH THE HIKERS COUNCIL, I LIKED

SEEING THE TRAILS BUILT, SEEING

THEM FINISHED, BUT ALSO SEEING

VOLUNTEERS COME OUT.

>> THIS'THERE'S A CERTAIN GROUP OF

PEOPLE THAT ENJOYS THAT AND

STICKS WITH IT.

A LOT OF US HAVE BECOME REALLY

GOOD FRIENDS OVER.

THE YEARS WITH

OUR WORK DAYS AND MAINTENANCE

DAYS A LOT OF TIMES IT'S AS MUCH

OF A SOCIAL ACTIVITY AS A WORK

ACTIVITY.

WE LOVE HAVING NEW PEOPLE COME

OUT.

WE LOVE HAVING ANYBODY COME OUT.

WE PROVIDE TOOLS AND TRAINING

AND WE ALSO PROVIDE LUNCH.

ANYBODY IS WELCOME AND WE'RE

HAPPY TO HAVE ANY AGE, ANY

ABILITY.

COME ON OUT.

>> YOU CAN LEARN MORE AT

HOOSIERHIKERSCOUNCIL.ORG.

AND AS ALWAYS, WE ENCOURAGE YOU

TO STAY CONNECTED WITH US.

>> JUST HEAD OVER TO

JOURNEYINDIANA.ORG, THERE YOU

CAN SEE FULL EPISODES, CONNECT

WITH US ON FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE AND

INSTAGRAM AND SUGGEST STORIES

FROM YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS.

>> BEFORE WE SAY GOOD-BYE, LET'S

TAKE A LOOK AROUND POPULAR

RECREATION SPOT HERE IN INDIANA.
