>> PRODUCTION SUPPORT FOR

"JOURNEY INDIANA" IS PROVIDED

BY:

>>> COMING UP.

>> GRAB A PINT WITH THE SISTERS

AT ST. BENEDICT'S BREW WORKS.

>> TRAVEL TO RIPLEY COUNTY TO

LEARN ALL ABOUT THE MILAN

MIRACLE OF 1954.

AND GET MUDDY WITH THE FOLKS AT

BADLANDS OFFROAD PARK IN ATTICA.

>> THAT'S ALL ON THIS EPISODE OF

"JOURNEY INDIANA"!

>> WELCOME TO "JOURNEY INDIANA."

I'M ASHLEY DILLARD.

>> AND I'M BRANDON WENTZ AND WE

ARE COMING TO YOU FROM THE

INDIANA BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME.

THIS MUSEUM, WHICH OPENED IN

1990 IS HOME TO ALL THINGS

HOOSIER HYSTERIA AND CELEBRATES

THE MEN, WOMEN AND TEAMS THAT

HAVE BROUGHT RECOGNITION TO

THEMSELVES, THEIR COMMUNITIES

AND SCHOOLS ON THE HARDWOOD.

IT'S ALL RIGHT HERE.

>> AND THERE'S AN ENORMOUS SHOE

OUTSIDE.

SO THERE'S THAT.

>> REALLY FRUSTRATING WE CAN

ONLY FIND ONE.

WHERE IS MY OTHER SHOE?

>> BUT BEFORE WE START TALKING

ABOUT THE SHOE OR ANYTHING ELSE

BASKETBALL RELATED, LET'S TALK

ABOUT BEER.

AND A ONE OF A KIND BREWERY IN

FERDINAND, INDIANA.

PRODUCER RUBEN BROWNING HAS THE

STORY OF ST. BENEDICT'S BREW

[ BELLS TOLLING ]

>> AS BENEDICTINE WOMEN, OUR

CALL IS TO SEEK GOD TOGETHER IN

COMMUNITY, IN PRAYER, AND IN

WORK.

>> THE BENEDICTINE ORDER, THEIR

ORA AND LABORA, WHICH IS PRAY

AND WORK.

WE PRAY, WORK AND BREW.

>> THE MONASTERY, WE WERE

FOUNDED HERE IN 1867.

NOW NUMBER ABOUT 130 SISTERS.

>> IN EUROPE, BECAUSE THEY

WANTED THE MONASTERIES TO BE

SORT OF SELF-SUFFICIENT.

BREWERIES WERE AN EVERY DAY FACT

OF LIFE.

THE SISTERS OPERATED A GIRLS

PREPARATORY SCHOOL FOR DECADES.

IT CLOSED AROUND 2000, 2001.

I WILL THOUGHT IT WOULD BE KIND

OF A LONG SHOT, BUT WE

APPROACHED THE SISTERS AND KIND

OF PRESENTED A PROPOSAL.

>> WE HAD A BUILDING THAT WAS

AVAILABLE, THAT WAS NO LONGER

BEING USED, AND AFTER SOME

CONSIDERATION BY THE WHOLE

COMMUNITY, WE DECIDED TO GO

AHEAD AND LEASE THE BUILDING TO

HIM FOR THE PURPOSES OF

ESTABLISHING THAT SMALL CRAFT

BREWERY.

>> THE REST KIND OF FELL INTO

PLACE AND WE OPENED IN OCTOBER

OF 2015.

>> IT'S REALLY BEEN A WONDERFUL

PARTNERSHIP.

HOSPITALITY IS A MAJOR CHARISM

OF BENEDICTINE LIFE.

IN FACT, PILGRIMS AND TRAVELERS

WOULD FIND REFUGE IN MONASTERIES

WHEN THEY WERE TRAVELING

THROUGHOUT EUROPE AND THEY WERE

SAFE PLACES TO COME AND BENEDICT

WOULD TELL HIS FOLLOWERS THAT WE

SHOULD RECEIVE EVERY GUEST WHO

COMES TO THE MONETARY AS IF WE

WERE RECEIVING CHRIST HIMSELF.

>> WE'RE IN THE HOSPITALITY

BUSINESS HERE, PRESENTING OUR

BEERS TO FOLKS, LOCAL, AS WELL

AS VISITORS FROM OUTSIDE THE

AREA.

AND IT REALLY GIVES THE SISTERS

AN OPPORTUNITY TO COME INTO

CONTACT WITH FOLKS WHO OTHERWISE

WOULD NOT VISIT HERE.

>> THE HOSPITALITY THAT IS

OFFERED, THE BREWERY IS -- IT

FITS RIGHT IN WITH OUR WHOLE

CALL.

>> WE GET LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO

COME HERE.

THEY KNOW MORE ABOUT BEER THAN

THEY DO MONASTERIES.

>> THEY USUALLY ASK QUESTIONS.

WHAT ABOUT THE SISTERS?

WHAT ABOUT THE MONASTERIES?

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

AND SOMETIMES THEY COME UP HERE

FOR A TOUR AFTER INITIALLY GOING

TO THE BREWERY.

BREWING BEER HAS OFTEN BEEN

ASSOCIATED WITH MONASTERIES IN

EUROPE, PARTICULARLY

CISTERCIANS, WHICH IS A BRANCH

OF BENEDICTINES, BUT MAINLY AT

MEN'S MONASTERIES.

AS FAR AS WE ARE AWARE, THIS IS

THE ONLY MONASTERY OF WOMEN THAT

HAS A BREWERY LOCATED ON ITS

GROUNDS HERE IN THE UNITED

STATES.

>> THE NUMBER ONE QUESTION THAT

PEOPLE ASK IS IF THE NUNS DO ANY

BREWING HERE.

THEY DON'T.

>> THE SISTERS DO NOT MAKE THE

BEER.

>> THEY HELP US TASTE.

SOMETIMES WHEN WE'RE BUSY, WE

WILL GET A SISTER WHO WILL JUST

STEP UP BEHIND THE SINK AND

START WASHING GLASSWARE.

THEIR PRAYERS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

TO US TOO, SO WE DON'T

UNDERVALUE THOSE OR ANYTHING.

WE TRY TO BE A LITTLE PLAYFUL

AND WHIMSICAL, BUT RESPECTFUL.

>> OUR BLONDE ALE IS CALLED

SISTER BETTY BLONDE.

>> WE NAMED THAT BEER AFTER HER.

>> AND WE HAVE THE AN I.P., WE

CALL IT THE GOOD HABIT.

>> THERE'S SANCTIMONIOUS STOUT.

THERE'S PRIORIOUS PORTER.

>> AND ONE OF OUR I.P.s,

RAISING LAZARUS AND THAT REFERS

TO JOHN'S GOSPEL OF JESUS

RAISING LAZARUS FROM THE DEAD.

I THINK WE PICKED THAT JUST

BECAUSE THAT WAS THE GOSPEL

READING OF THE WEEKEND WHEN WE

KICKED OFF THE BEER.

SO WE DON'T PROSELYTIZE OR HAND

OUT SMALL LITTLE BIBLES.

WE ARE HAPPY TO EXPLAIN THE

CONNECTIONS TO OUR BEERS.

>> THE PRIMARY FOCUS FOR OUR

BREWING HAS BEEN BELGIAN ABBEY

STYLES AND BELGIAN TRIPLES AND

QUADS.

>> WE PROBABLY BREWED WELL OVER

50 OR 60 BEERS.

SOME OF THEM ARE THE YEAR-ROUND

STAPLES.

SOME ARE SEASONALS.

>> WE USUALLY HAVE A PRETTY GOOD

ROTATING SELECTION, THE BLONDE

AND ALE.

WE HAVE PIZZA AND PRETZELS AND

FRIED CHICKEN.

>> THE GROUNDS OF THE MONASTERY

ARE ALWAYS OPEN FOR PEOPLE TO

COME TO WALK AROUND, TO ENJOY

BEAUTIFUL SCENES EVERY TIME OF

THE YEAR.

>> THE ARCHITECTURE HERE AT THE

SISTERS IS -- IT'S REALLY -- I

MEAN, IT'S STUNNING.

WE ARE CERTAINLY IN LOVE WITH

OUR AREA.

FERDINAND IS SUCH A UNIQUE

COMMUNITY, AND THE PEOPLE ARE

JUST EXTREMELY FRIENDLY AND VERY

WELCOMING AND SUPPORTING OF US.

TO KNOW YOU WALK A LITTLE BIT IN

THE FOOTSTEPS OR THE TRADITION

OR THE SHADOW MAYBE OF THOSE

FAMOUS MONASTERIES AND THEIR

BREWERIES, IT'S INSPIRING.

>> I FEEL LIKE THE CRAFT BREWERY

SCENE HAS REALLY EXPLODED IN

INDIANA IN THE PAST TEN YEARS

AND THIS IS A SUPER INTERESTING

PLACE TO HAVE A BREWERY.

>> YEAH.

>> I THINK IN MAYBE JUST A

LITTLE BIT, I WILL BE VENTURING

OVER THERE TO TRY SOME.

>> WELL, IT'S REALLY INTERESTING

TOO.

THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE

CRAFT BREWS SO MUCH, THAT A

PLACE LIKE THAT, IT IS THEIR

PLACE OF WORSHIP.

[ LAUGHTER ]

>> IF THAT STORY LEFT YOU

THIRSTY, YOU CAN GET ALL THE

INFO AT

SAINTBENEDICTSBREWWORKS.COM.

>> AND NOW WE ARE JOINED BY

CHRIS MAY, THE DIRECTOR OF THE

INDIANA BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING US.

>> MY PLEASURE.

GREAT TO HAVE YOU HERE.

>> CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE

HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM.

>> SURE.

THE BUILDING WE ARE STANDING IN

WAS OPENED IN 1990.

WE HAVE OUR 30th ANNIVERSARY

TO CELEBRATE IN 2020.

THE HALL OF FAME EXISTED IN

INDIANAPOLIS PREVIOUS TO THIS

BUT THEY WANTED A FULL FLEDGED

MUSEUM EXPERIENCE AND OPENED THE

DOORS HERE 30 YEARS AGO.

>> WHY WAS NEW CASTLE THE

PERFECT PLACE FOR THIS?

>> A COUPLE OF MAIN REASONS COME

TO THE FOREFRONT.

ONE IS THAT THIS BUILDING WAS

BUILT FROM SCRATCH.

OTHER COMMUNITIES WANTED TO TRY

TO LAND THE INDIANA BASKETBALL

HALL OF FAME, BUT HAD EMPTY,

VACANT BUILDINGS THEY WERE

OFFERING.

THIS WAS FROM SCRATCH.

AS I SAID IT WAS 14,000 SQUARE

FEET OF MUSEUM EXPERIENCE AND

ALSO THE COMMUNITY GOT BEHIND IT

AND PROMISED A VOLUNTEER STAFF

THAT TO THIS DAY, 30 YEARS

LATER, WE STILL BENEFIT FROM TO

RUN THE ORGANIZATION, THE

OPERATIONS.

>> WHAT CAN FOLKS EXPERIENCE IF

THEY MAKE THE TRIP HERE.

>> WE HAVE SO MUCH TO OFFER, WE

THINK.

YOU CAN HIT THE LAST-SECOND SHOT

AND BE THE GAME WINNER.

YOU CAN BE A SPORTSCASTER AND

CALL PLAY-BY-PLAY OF FAMOUS

INDIANA BASKETBALL GAMES, AND,

OF COURSE, WE HAVE THE JERSEYS,

THE TROPHIES, THE NOSTALGIA OF

CHAMPIONS AND CHAMPIONSHIPS FROM

YEARS PRIOR.

AND, OF COURSE, AS A HALL OF

FAME, OUR ENSHRINEMENT

CELEBRATES ALL THE GREAT

PLAYERS, COACHES,

ADMINISTRATORS, BROADCASTERS,

EVERYONE WHO MADE BASKETBALL

SUCH A BIG PART OF THE STATE

HISTORY.

>> CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE

GIANT SHOE.

>> SURE.

THAT'S A COMMON QUESTION AS

WELL.

IT ORIGINATED -- IT WAS PART OF

A BILLBOARD MARKETING CAMPAIGN

FOR SOMEONE ELSE, AND IT JUST

SEEMED TO BE A NATURAL FIT, AND

SO IT'S BEEN HERE ON PREMISES

FOR QUITE A WHILE, AND IT'S

BECOME A BIG PHOTO-OP

OPPORTUNITY, FAMILIES,

BASKETBALL TEAMS, AND TOURISTS,

THEY WANT TO SHOW IT OFF TO

THEIR FRIENDS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

AND HAVE IT FOR THEIR

SCRAPBOOKS.

>> YOU ANNOUNCED THE 2020 HALL

OF FAME.

I'M WONDERING WHAT GOES INTO

THAT PROCESS.

>> IT'S AN EXHAUSTIVE PROCESS.

IT TAKES TWO MONTHS ALL TOLD.

WE HAVE A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT

COMMITTEES AND LEVELS OF

PROCESS.

WE HAVE OVER 200 NOMINEES FOR

ABOUT 12 SPOTS EACH YEAR.

IT'S VERY COMPETITIVE.

AND FOR PLAYERS AND COACHES TO

BE SELECTED AND INDUCTED INTO

THE HALL OF FAME, THEY HAVE TO

HAVE HAD IMMENSE SUCCESS AND GO

THROUGH A THOROUGH PROCESS TO

DETERMINE THAT THEY ARE AMONG

THE BEST IN INDIANA BASKETBALL

HISTORY.

>> THANK YOU, CHRIS.

WE WILL TALK WITH YOU MORE IN

JUST A LITTLE BIT.

UP NEXT, WE ARE HEADED TOUT TO

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE MILAN

MIRACLE OF 1954 AND VISIT THE

MUSEUM THAT CELEBRATES IT.

PRODUCER JASON PEAR HAS THE

>> TYPICAL SMALL TOWN.

>> A LOT LIKE IT IS RIGHT NOW,

EXCEPT IT IS SLIGHTLY LARGER.

HIGH SCHOOL 12 GRADES WERE IN

ONE BUILDING.

OUR CLASS, FOR EXAMPLE, WAS 30

PEOPLE.

IN 1953, WE HAD A NEW COACH, AND

SEVERAL PLAYERS WERE BACK FROM

THE YEAR BEFORE, BUT WE WERE

KIND OF A TYPICAL DANGEROUS

MILAN TEAM, WHICH MEANS WE

PROBABLY WON THE COUNTY

TOURNAMENT AND THAT WAS THE BIG

THING TO DO IN THOSE DAYS.

>> A THREE-POINT LEAD HERE FOR

MUNCIE WITH 7 MINUTES LEFT IN

THE BALL GAME.

HE GOES DOWN AND TO WHITE.

WHITE HOLDS, AND HE FEEDS OFF

CRABBE.

>> WE HAD A HUDDLE WITH 13 OR 15

SECONDS OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT,

AND MR. WOOD SAYS, WE'LL ALL

MOVE OVER AND LET -- GET THE

BALL TO BOB AND LET HIM TAKE HIM

ONE-ON-ONE.

I SAID, WHY DON'T WE JUST GO

OVER AND STAND THE OPPOSITE SIDE

OF THE FLOOR.

AND THAT'S WHAT WE DID.

AND HE HIT THE SHOT.

AND THAT WAS THE GAME.

>> SCORES!

[ CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ]

MILAN WINS 32-30.

>> AT THE END OF THE

20th CENTURY, BASKETBALL GAME

WAS CONSIDERED THE NUMBER ONE

ATHLETIC STORY FOR THE CENTURY.

SO IT STRUCK HOME WITH A LOT OF

PEOPLE IN INDIANA WOULD PLAYED

BASKETBALL.

IT WAS PRETTY MUCH THE SPORT.

AT ONE TIME IT WAS THE SPORT.

>> THE BIGGEST GUYS TO GO IN '53

TO THE STATE FINALS WAS JUST

MIRACULOUS, BUT THEN TO GO BACK

IN '54, WE CERTAINLY WERE VERY,

VERY PROUD, BUT TO SAY LET'S

COLLECT MEMORABILIA AND LET'S

BRING OUTSIDE PEOPLE INTO THE

COMMUNITY, THAT JUST NEVER -- AS

FAR AS I KNOW, NO ONE EVER

STEPPED FORWARD TO SAY, LET'S --

LET'S DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.

>> WE HAD A LADY MOVE IN TO

MILAN.

SHE MARRIED A MILAN FELLOW.

SHE MOVED HERE FROM IOWA.

AND SHE ALWAYS ASKED, DOES THE

TOWN DO ANYTHING ABOUT THAT GAME

FROM '54?

AND THE ANSWER WAS, NO.

IT WAS JUST -- YOU KNOW, THE

BASKETBALL.

WE WON THE STATE, BUT IT WAS A

BASKETBALL GAME.

SHE SAID, WELL, I THINK WE NEED

TO DO SOMETHING.

SO SHE STARTED COLLECTING ITEMS

AND ASKED EACH OF THE PLAYERS IF

THEY WOULDN'T DONATE SOME OF THE

PERSONAL ITEMS FROM THE '54 ERA.

>> WE RECEIVED JACKETS AFTER OUR

JUNIOR YEAR.

THAT WAS NEVER DONE.

AND I KNOW WHY IT WAS DONE.

AFTER GOING TO THE STATE FINALS,

I'M SURE THE POWERS THAT BE

FIGURED WE'D NEVER HAVE THAT

HAPPEN AGAIN.

SO WE'LL GIVE THOSE GUYS

JACKETS.

WE GOT JACKETS THE NEXT YEAR

ALSO.

>> WE GOT A GRANT TO BUY THE OLD

BANK IN TOWN, WHICH IS WHERE WE

ARE PRESENTLY.

THERE'S JUST SO MANY MILAN

THINGS, THE PICTURES OF TEAMS IN

THE PAST.

>> WE PASSED CARS PARKED SIX OR

SEVEN MILES OUT OF TOWN, PARKED

AND PEOPLE WALKING INTO TOWN.

>> TICKETS.

OH, GOLLY!

AND PAMPHLETS, AND PICTURES.

>> THE CROWD WAS HERE.

AND WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT THAT'S

THE WAY THEY DID EVERY STATE

CHAMPION.

>> WE HAVE AN ARRAY OF NEWSPAPER

ARTICLES AT THAT TIME THAT YOU

COULD SPEND ALL DAY JUST READING

THOSE.

>> ALL RIGHT, LISTEN UP!

LISTEN UP!

>> RICHARD HOSPITAL IN

INDIANAPOLIS SAID WE ARE

CLEANING OUT OUR UPSTAIRS.

WE HAVE SEVERAL THINGS FROM THE

MOVIE.

DO YOU GUYS WANT THAT STUFF?

AND WE SAID, WE CERTAINLY DO.

WE HAVE THE HOSPITAL BED WHERE

SHOOTER IS JUMPING ON AND ALL

THE APPARATUS THAT GOES ALONG

WITH THAT PARTICULAR SCENE.

THEY BROUGHT THAT TO US.

WE HAVE A SCRIPT FROM THE MOVIE.

>> ONE THING THAT I ALWAYS

THOUGHT THE TEAM GAVE BACK TO

THE TOWN WAS THE FACT THAT THEY

ALL GOT SCHOLARSHIPS.

>> AND THEN WHEN WE WON, THERE

WERE OPPORTUNITIES TO GO TO

COLLEGES AND AT A LOWER PRICE,

AND SO ALMOST ALL OF US WENT TO

COLLEGE.

>> BUT THAT THOUGHT OF GOING TO

COLLEGE TRICKLED DOWN THROUGH

THE COMMUNITY, AND THAT WAS

SUDDENLY ANOTHER OPTION FOR

YOUNG PEOPLE.

IT'S JUST GREAT WHEN PEOPLE COME

HERE AND THEY -- THEY ARE

USUALLY AMAZED THAT WE HAVE SO

MANY THINGS AND I HAVE TO SAY,

IT'S -- IT'S A GOOD THING FOR

OUR COMMUNITY, AND IT BRINGS

PEOPLE INTO THE COMMUNITY, AND

THEY ARE VERY PLEASED WHEN THEY

LEAVE.

>> I HAVE TO SAY, THAT PIECE

BRINGS BACK A LOT OF FOND

MEMORIES FOR ME, BECAUSE WE ARE

BACK IN BASKETBALL TERRITORY

WHICH IS EXACTLY WHERE ASHLEY

AND I STARTED ON EPISODE ONE OF

"JOURNEY INDIANA."

>> YEP.

IN KNIGHTSTOWN.

WE WERE SO YOUNG.

SO NAIVE.

>> WANT TO PLAN YOUR OWN VISIT?

YOU CAN GET ALL THE INFO AT

MILAN54.ORG.

>> AND WE ARE JOINED BY CHRIS

MAY ONCE AGAIN.

THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING WITH US.

>> MY PLEASURE.

>> WE PAID A VISIT TO THE MUSEUM

THAT CELEBRATES THE 1954 MILAN

TEAM.

I SUPPOSE THAT THEY ARE PROBABLY

FEATURED PROMINENTLY HERE.

>> I'M NOT SURE YOU COULD HAVE

AN INDIANA BASKETBALL HALL OF

FAME MUSEUM WITHOUT PAYING PROM

HOMAGE TO THAT TEAM, AND WHAT

THEY REPRESENT.

SO THEY HAVE THEIR OWN ALCOVE

AND SECTION IN THIS MUSEUM AND

THEY HAD THAT A LONG TIME.

AND ESPECIALLY AMONG THE

OUT-OF-STATE, THEY LOVE THE

MOVIE "HOOSIERS" OR ANY PART OF

THE MILAN STORY.

THEY ARE PRONE TO SAY, WHERE CAN

I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THAT TEAM.

ABSOLUTELY THEY ARE REPRESENTED.

>> THERE'S A DISPLAY OF

REMARKABLE PHOTOGRAPHS.

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THAT.

>> THE HOOSIER HARDWOOD PHOTO

PROJECT IS THE COLLABORATION

BETWEEN CHRIS SMITH AND MICHAEL

KEATING.

TWO RETIRED PROFESSIONAL

PHOTOGRAPHERS, AND FOR THE PAST

FIVE AND A HALF YEARS, THEY HAVE

GONE AROUND THE STATE OF INDIANA

TO PRACTICALLY EVERY NOOK AND

CRANNY TO PHOTOGRAPH GYMNASIUMS

BOTH CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL

FACILITIES AND ALSO FACILITIES

THAT WERE HIGH SCHOOL GYMS

BEFORE CONSOLIDATION WAVE OR

BEFORE A SCHOOL CLOSED.

AND THEY HAVE DONE SO VERY

ARTFULLY AND QUITE IMPRESSIVELY,

AND SO THAT HAS BEEN AN ADDITION

IN OUR MUSEUM THAT FOLKS -- IT'S

BEEN A LITERAL WOW FACTOR FOR

VISITORS WHEN THEY SEE THESE

PHOTOS, BACKLIT IN THE WAY THAT

CHRIS AND MICHAEL HAVE

PHOTOGRAPHED THEM.

>> YOU HAVE BEEN HERE FOR A

WHILE AND YOU KNOW THIS PLACE

WELL.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE

AROUND HERE?

ANY HIDDEN GEMS?

>> TRUTHFULLY, IF I HAD MY

CHOICE, I WOULD SPEND ALL OF MY

TIME IN THE ARCHIVES, BECAUSE

KIND OF BEHIND-THE-SCENES.

WE HAVE AN IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION

OF PHOTOGRAPHS, OF PUBLICATIONS,

OF VIDEOS AND AUDIO TAPES AND

IT'S KIND OF A DOWNSTAIRS

BUNKER-TYPE AREA, PEACE AND

QUIET, AND I LOVE BEING DOWN

THERE AND STILL TEN AND A HALF

YEARS LATER, EVERY DAY, I'M

FINDING A NEW PHOTO THAT I

DIDN'T KNOW WE HAD, DIDN'T KNOW

IT EXISTED.

IT HAS A LOT OF COOL STUFF.

ON THE ARTIFACT AND MEMORABILIA

SIDE OF THINGS, WE DO HAVE ONE

OF THE 1954 MILAN STATE

CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS, IT'S NOT ON

DISPLAY, WHICH IS QUITE UNIQUE

AND SPECIAL TO OUR COLLECTION,

AND SO THAT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING

FUN TO TELL PEOPLE ABOUT AND TO

SHOW OFF.

>> AND IF FOLKS WOULD LIKE TO

GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE

MUSEUM AND THE HALL OF FAME,

WHERE SHOULD SHE GO.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

OUR WEBSITE IS

AND, OF COURSE, WE ARE ON THE

TYPICAL SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLETS AND

HAVE ALL KINDS OF UPDATES AND

CONTENT GOING ON THERE TOO.

>> IT'S EASY TO REMEMBER.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SPEAKING

WITH US, CHRIS.

>> OUR PLEASURE TO HAVE YOU HERE

THANKS.

>> FINALLY, WE ARE HEADED JUST

WEST OF LaFAYETTE TO A LITTLE

TOWN NAMED ATTICA TO EXPERIENCE

THE BATTLE OF THE BADLANDS.

>> A LOT OF PEOPLE ASK ME WHY DO

PEOPLE VIEW PAGEANTS IN A

NEGATIVE WAY.

MOST PEOPLE VIEW PAGEANT QUEENS

AS GIRLS WHO WALK AROUND IN

HEELS AND WALK AROUND IN A SASH

AND CROWN.

LITTLE DO THEY KNOW THAT WE ARE

SMART AND WE ARE ACTUALLY

TOMBOYS.

>> I'M SADIE WELCH, YOUR USA

NATIONAL MISS MISS INDIANA 2020.

AND MY JOB IS TO REPRESENT

INDIANA AT THE STATE NATIONAL

MISS NATIONALS IN JULY.

I STARTED OUT AS LITTLE MISS

TODDLERS AND TIARAS, AND GLITZ

WORLD.FINALLY, I REALIZED WITH E

CROWN AND SASH I COULD DO

SOMETHING AND MAKE A STATEMENT

IN THIS WORLD.

I GOT INVOLVED IN MISS INDIANA

TEEN U.S.A. AND THE HIGHEST

PLACING I GOT WAS FIRST

RUNNER-UP.

THEN I WAS LIKE, I WANT TO DO

MORE AND I AGED NOW.

NOW I'M IN A MISS DIVISION AND

WENT TO U.S.A. NATIONAL MISS AND

I LOVED IT, AND I GET TO BE AN

ADVOCATE FOR BULLING IN SCHOOLS

AND REPRESENT INDIANA.

>> AND SO GROWING UP, I DID

NATIONAL PAGEANTS INSTEAD OF

NATIONAL RACING AND I HAD THE

GLITZ AND GLAMOR AND THEN I WENT

INTO RACING WITH MY BROTHER AND

I REALIZED I LIKED THIS AND I

GOT TO RACE AGAINST THE GUYS.

IT WAS FUN WITH THE HOLE SHOTS.

PULLING OUT IN FRONT OF THEM.

I USED TO HAVE A LITTLE LICENSE

PLATE THAT SAID, "YOU JUST GOT

PASSED BY A GIRL."

I THINK THE DRIVE, YOU DON'T

HAVE TO BE A GUY TO BE DOMINANT

IN THIS SPORT AND AS I GREW

OLDER, I KNEW I COULD BE

DOMINANT IN THIS MALE DOMINANT

SPORT.

I PERSONALLY GREW ON HOW TO BE A

BETTER PERSON BY NOT FACING THE

STEREOTYPICAL PAGEANT GIRL AND

BEING A RACE GIRL TOO.

SO I STARTED RACING WHEN I WAS

YOUNGER AND MY BROTHER, IT WAS

ACTUALLY HIS SPORT, AND HE WAS

AMAZING AT IT.

HE WAS THE STAR OF THE SHOW AND

I WAS ALWAYS AT GLITZ PAGEANTS.

WHAT IF I GOT ON A FOUR-WHEELER,

WOULD I LIKE IT?

I STARTED HAVING FUN AND I ENDED

UP RACING.

WE RACED TOGETHER FOR A LITTLE

BIT.

IT WAS HIS WORLD AND I WAS

FOLLOWING IN HIS FOOTSTEPS.

HE'S KIND OF GROWN OUT OF

RACING, BUT I HOPPED ON A HONDA

450 AND I THINK IT'S A WHOLE NEW

WORLD AND I LOVE IT.

NOW I RACE WHEN I'M ABLE TO.

IF I'M NOT AT A PAGEANT, I'M

RACING OR IN THE COMMUNITY.

I'M ALSO A LUCAS OIL GIRL.

SO PRO MOTOCROSS NATIONAL RACES

WHICH IS A DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERE

THAN ATV.

I GET TO HOLD A BOARD AND THE 30

SECONDS BUT NOT ONLY THAT, I GET

TO INTERVIEW THE BEST OF THE

BEST IN THE RACING WORLD.

I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE IXCR

CROSS COUNTRY RACING, SINCE I

WAS SIX YEARS OLD.

SO 14 YEARS.

I WAS THE ONLY GIRL WHO RACED

AGAINST THE GUYS.

I WAS A LITTLE WORM RUNNING ALL

AROUND.

AND THEY REALIZED THAT RACING

WAS NOT EVERYTHING THAT I DID.

AND THEY SUPPORTED ME IN

EVERYTHING I DID OUTSIDE THE

RACING WORLD, AND JUST THE

RACING COMMUNITY WHERE IT'S A

RACING FAMILY.

IT'S A BIG GROUP OF LOVE AND WE

ALL LOVE THE SPORT OF RACING AND

THAT'S WHAT IXCR IS.

TODAY I'M HERE JUST TO HAVE FUN

AND DO WHAT I LOVE.

I'M RACING A HONDA 450R AGAINST

THE GUYS.

AT NATIONAL, I WOULD BE RACING

AGAINST THE GIRLS BUT THE

WOMEN'S PRO CLASS HERE IS NOT AS

COMPETITIVE AND I LIKE TO PUSH

MYSELF.

THAT'S WHY I RACE AGAINST THE

GUYS AND HOPEFULLY THEY DON'T

GET CONCERNED WHEN A GIRL WITH A

CROWN SHOWS UP NEXT TO THEM.

[ LAUGHTER ]

ALONG WITH INDIANA CROSS COUNTRY

RACING, I HAVE DONE GRAND

NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY RACING

WHICH STANDS FOR GNCC.

IT'S A SERIES THAT'S NATIONWIDE

AND 13 WEEKENDS OUT OF THE YEAR,

WE COME TOGETHER FROM DIFFERENT

STATES AND RACE COMPETITIVELY,

IT'S JUST A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

ATMOSPHERE, BUT IT STILL HAS THE

DRIVE OF THE LOVE FOR RACING,

AND I GOT TWO NATIONAL

CHAMPIONSHIPS AND NOW I RACE THE

WOMEN'S PRO CLASS, WHEN I'M BE

ABLE TO DO THAT.

I GO TO SELECT FEW OF THOSE NOW

SINCE I'M IN SCHOOL AND

REPRESENTING INDIANA IN OTHER

COMMUNITY EVENTS.

IT'S HARD TO GO TO THEM ALL.

WHEN I GO, I LIKE TO REPRESENT

AND RACE THE WOMEN'S PRO CLASS.

SO ONE OF MY MAIN GOALS AS YOUR

U.S.A. NATIONAL MISS INDIANA

2020 IS TO BREAK THE STEREO

TYPICAL PAGEANT GIRL.

I'M A D1 ATHLETE AT PURDUE

UNIVERSITY WHERE I'M A

CHEERLEADER THERE.

I LOVE TO RACE FOUR-WHEELERS AND

GET DIRTY AND RACE AGAINST THE

GUYS BUT I'M AN ADVOCATE FOR

BULLYING AND RESPECTIVE

ENVIRONMENTS IN SCHOOLS AND I

WANT TO TEACH OTHERS TO FOLLOW

THEIR DREAMS AND NOT GIVE UP.

>> I HEAR THAT WE MIGHT BE ABLE

TO ACQUIRE SOME GO PROS.

SO I'M JUST SAYING AT SOME

POINT, YOU, ME, TWO

FOUR-WHEELERS, A RACE THROUGH

THE BADLANDS.

>> MAYBE.

WE'LL SEE IF WE CAN WORK ON

THAT.

[ LAUGHTER ]

WE'LL SEE IF WE ARE HALL OF FAME

>> OH, NO!

>> OKAY, BRANDON, YOU'RE UP

FIRST.

>> ALL RIGHT.

LET'S DO THIS.

>> THREE, TWO --

>> OH!

OH!

>> NOT EVEN CLOSE.

ALL RIGHT.

OKAY.

YOUR TURN.

YOU READY?

>> FOR TEAM DILLARD.

READY FOR IT?
