>> COMING UP, TAKE A LOOK AT THE

STARS WITH SOME FOLKS FROM

AROUND INDIANA.

AND MEET A MUNCIE MAN WHO TURNED

HIS PASSION FOR SKATEBOARDING

INTO A THRIVING BUSINESS THAT IS

ALL ON THIS EPISODE OF JOURNEY

INDIANA.

>> WELCOME TO JOURNEY INDIANA.

I'M BRANDON WENTZ AND WE'RE

COMING TO YOU FROM THE CAPITAL

STATE HISTORIC SITE.

THIS HISTORIC BUILDING WAS

INDIANA'S ORIGINAL STATE CAPITOL

AND SERVED AS THE CENTER OF

GOVERNMENT FROM 1816-1825.

TODAY, IT IS OPEN FOR TOUR,

SCHOOL GROUPS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

FIRST, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT

SOMETHING A LITTLE FURTHER AWAY.

PRODUCER JOHN INTRODUCES US US.

>> MY UNIVERSE BY THE NIGHT

SKIES, IT IS BEAUTIFUL BEYOND

WORDS.

>> I THINK PEOPLE ARE NATURALLY

CURIOUS ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND

THEM.

I THINK IT IS IN OUR NATURE.

>> WE ARE LIVING IN A MODE OF

DIFFICULT IN THE UNIVERSE, BUT

WE ARE SPECIAL CREATURES BECAUSE

WE ARE THE ONLY LIVING BEINGS IN

THE UNIVERSE.

>> I NEVER FAILED TO STOP AND

LOOK UP AND SEE WHAT IS UP

THERE.

IT IS SOMETHING I HAVE ALWAYS

MARVELED AT MY WHOLE LIFE.

I GREW UP OUT IN THE COUNTRY FAR

AWAY FROM CITY LIGHTS, 30 MILES

WEST OF INDIANAPOLIS.

WE HAD A BIG FARMHOUSE AND EVERY

NIGHT ON A CLEAR NIGHT, I WOULD

CLIMB ON THE ROOF AND HAVE A

HORIZON TO HORIZON VIEW OF THE

NIGHT SKY AND I TAUGHT MYSELF

THE PHASES OF THE MOON AND

STARS.

THIS IS THE 36-INCH LENGTH

TELESCOPE BUILT BY DR. LINK WHO

IS A SURGEON AT INDIANA

UNIVERSITY.

IN THE 1930'S, HE WANTED TO

BUILD HIS OWN OBSERVATORY.

WE'RE STANDING AT THE HIGHEST

POINT IN MORGAN COUNTY.

BACK IN THE 30'S, THIS WAS FAR

AWAY FROM THE LIGHTS OF

INDIANAPOLIS, WHICH WASN'T AS

BIG AS IT IS NOW, SO IT WITH AS

PERFECT SPOT FOR HIM TO ENGAGE

HIS PASSION.

HE PAID FOR IT HIMSELF AND HE

USED IT FOR HIS OWN PERSONAL USE

FOR 10 YEARS AND IN 1948, HE

DONATED IT TO INDIANA UNIVERSITY

AND THEY USED IT FOR RESEARCH

FOR FOUR DECADES AND THEY

RETIRED IT IN THE LATE 1980'S.

WE OFFER OPEN HOUSES A COUPLE

TIMES A MONTH AND WE OPEN IT UP

AND LET PEOPLE TOUR IT AROUND

AND THEY LEARN ABOUT DR. LINK

AND HOW HE BUILT IT AND AT NIGHT

THAT IS WHEN THE REALLY GOOD

FIREWORKS START BECAUSE

ESPECIALLY ON A CLEAR NIGHT, WE

WILL OPEN UP THE SHUTTERS, FIRE

UP THE SCOPE AND LOOK AT ALL

KINDS OF THINGS, SO WE HAVE

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT THINGS HERE A

COUPLE OF TIMES A MONTH AND WE

DO MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS

THROUGHOUT CENTRAL INDIANA AND

THE STATE.

WE CAN SEE CRATERS ON THE MOON

THAT ARE THIS BIG AROUND THROUGH

THE EYE PIECE.

YOU CAN SEE MOUNTAINS THAT ARE

15,000 FEET HIGH ON THE MOON.

WE CAN SEE THE GREAT RED SPOT ON

JUPITER.

WE CAN SEE THE FOUR BIGGEST

MOONS.

WE CAN SEE THE RINGS OF SATURN

AND WHEN PEOPLE SEE THE RINGS OF

SATURN THAT GETS THEM EXCITED

BECAUSE IT LOOKS SO REAL.

THEY ALMOST THINK IT LOOKS FAKE

LIKE A PICTURE BECAUSE THEY ARE

NOT USED TO HOW STARK IT IS.

WE CAN SEAGALCYS 20 MILLION

LIGHT YEARS AWAY, THESE ARE

GALAXIES THAT ARE FAR, FAR AWAY

THAT YOU USUALLY CAN'T SEE FROM

A SMALLER TELESCOPE.

YOU CAN SEE SPIRAL BANDS AND

STRUCTURES ALL OVER THE NIGHT

SKY.

ONCE YOU LOOK THROUGH THE

TELESCOPE IT IS QUITE EXCITING.

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE IT.

WHEN PEOPLE COME AND SEE THE

OBJECTS FOR THE FIRST TIME,

THEIR PASSION IS IGNITED, A

SPARK GOES ON AND THAT IS WHAT

WE'RE LOOKING FOR.

>> IT IS REALLY COOL HOW THE

STARS CAN FASCINATE ANYONE

WHETHER THEY ARE A PROFESSIONAL

ASTRONOMER OR NOT.

WHEN I WAS IN LATE ELEMENTARY

SCHOOL, I STUMBLED ACROSS A SHOW

ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL CALLED

"THE UNIVERSE" AND I WATCHED A

WHOLE BUNCH OF EPISODES AND I

WAS LIKE, WOW, THIS IS COOL.

I WAS JUST TRANSFIXED BY THE

THINGS THAT I SAW, THE BEAUTY

THAT YOU CAN SEE IN THE NIGHT

SKY.

I WAS IN A STEM MENTORSHIP

PROGRAM WHERE I WAS MENTORED BY

A LOCAL ASTRONOMY PHYSICS

PROFESSOR AND IN HIGH SCHOOL, I

CONTINUED THAT BY JOINING MY

HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE TEAM AND I

WAS THEIR GO-TO PERSON FOR THE

ATRON MI -- ASTRONOMY EVENTS AND

THROUGH THAT EXPERIENCE, I WAS

LIKE WHY NOT STUDY IN COLLEGE.

LAST SPRING, I WAS APPROACHED BY

ONE OF MY PROFESSORS AND HE SAYS

THE PRESIDENT OF THE ASTRONOMY

CLUB AND HE IS A SENIOR AND HE

IS GRADUATING.

HE DOESN'T HAVE A REPLACEMENT,

DO YOU WANT TO BE PRESIDENT OF

THE ASTRONG. ASTRONOMY CLUB?

I WAS LIKE THIS IS REALLY COOL

AND I COULD ATTEND EVENTS AND DO

MORE HANDS ON STUFF WITH MY

KNOWLEDGE.

YOU CAN OBSERVE WITH YOUR NAKED

EYE.

YOU CAN OBSERVE WITH A TELESCOPE

AND THERE ARE LOTS OF DIFFERENT

TELESCOPES.

YOU CAN GO TO AN OBSERVATORY,

YOU CAN EVEN GOING OUT TO A DARK

PLACE, LIKE LAKE MONROE, YOU CAN

SEE STARS AROUND THERE.

WITH THE NAKED EYE, I LIKE

SEEING ORION IT IS MY FAVORITE

CONSOLATION.

JUPITER CAN BE COOL WITH A SMALL

TELESCOPE.

WHEN I GET THE CHANCE, EVEN IF I

DON'T HAVE A TELESCOPE WITH ME,

I LIKE TO STARE UP AT THE NIGHT

SKY AND OBSERVE THE BEAUTY THAT

IS UP THERE.

I WOULD BE THAT KID WHO WOULD BE

LIKE SO TRANSFIXED ON THE NIGHT

SKY, AS I'M WALKING, I WOULD

WALK INTO SOMETHING.

THE UNIVERSE, EXEMPLIFIED BY THE

NIGHT SKY IS BEAUTIFUL BEYOND

WORDS, SO TO GET A CHANCE TO

REFLECT ON WHAT YOU SEE UP ABOVE

IS A REALLY COOL THING TO DO.

>> I THINK PEOPLE ARE NATURALLY

CURIOUS ABOUT THE WORLD AROUND

THEM AND I THINK IT IS IN OUR

NATURE.

THE CENTER OF THE NEBULOUS IS

HOTTER AND IT MAKES IT EASIER TO

EXCITE THE OXYGEN GAS AND THE

HYDROGEN GASES.

>> I ALWAYS HAD AN INTEREST IN

SPACE.

I GREW UP DURING THE APOLLO

PROGRAM.

WHEN I WAS A LITTLE KID, I BUILT

THE ROCKETS, BUILD THE MODELS,

FOLLOWED ALL OF THAT.

IN THIRD GRADE, I HAD A NOTEBOOK

WITH ALL OF THE DATA TO FIND ON

ALL OF THE PLANETS.

AFTER I GRADUATED, I WAS ABLE TO

GO TO GRAD SCHOOL AND WORK ON

THE VIKING SPACE PROGRAM, THE

PROGRAM THAT WENT TO MARS.

I WANTED TO BECOME A COLLEGE

PROFESSOR SINCE I WAS IN HIGH

SCHOOL AND WHEN I GOT TO COME

HERE, IT WAS LIKE A DREAM COME

TRUE FOR ME.

A FEW YEARS AFTER THAT, THEY

ASKED ME IF I WANTED TO WORK ON

THE OBSERVATORY AND, OBVIOUSLY,

I GRABBED THAT OPPORTUNITY AS

WELL AND I HAVE BEEN DOING THAT

FOR 27 YEARS NOW.

UP HERE IN THE OBSERVATORY, WE

HAVE EIGHT PERMANENTLY MOUNTED

TELESCOPES.

WE HAVE TWO 6-INCH REFRACTING

TELESCOPE.

WE HAVE FOUR 17-INCH REFLECTING

TELESCOPES AND WE HAVE TWO

20-INCH REFLECTING TELESCOPES,

THE REASON WHY WE HAVE ALL OF

THESE TELESCOPES INSTEAD OF ONE

BIG ONE IS FOR THE HANDS-ON

EXPERIENCE, SO STUDENTS CAN COME

AND USE THE TELESCOPES RATHER

THAN WATCHING SOMEONE ELSE DO

IT.

YOU WILL BE MAKING YOUR OWN

PICTURES LIKE THIS.

WE OFFER A MINOR IN ASTRONOMY

AND WE HAVE AN ASTRONOMY CLASS

THAT MEETS OUT HERE IN THE

OBSERVATORY.

WE HAVE AN ACTIVE ASTRONOMY CLUB

AND THEY MEET ONCE A WEEK AND WE

PUT ON OPEN HOUSES FOR THE

PUBLIC.

WE ALSO HAVE SPECIAL EVENTS.

THE STUDENTS ARE THE THINGS THAT

DRIVE MY PASSION.

THEY ARE INTERESTED IN ASTRONOMY

AND IT IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO

GET THEM EXCITED ABOUT THINGS IN

THE CLASSROOM AND ALSO OUT HERE

IN THE OBSERVATORY THERE IS JUST

A LOT OF INTEREST FOR STUDENTS

IN ASTRONOMY.

LOOK UP WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE.

THERE IS SO MUCH OUT THERE, YOU

JUST TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK UP

AND BE WONDEROUS ABOUT IT AND BE

CURIOUS.

IF YOU THINK BACK TO CAVE MAN

DAYS, THERE IS NO TV, NO

INTERNET, YOU'RE SITTING BY THE

CAMPFIRE AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO

IS LOOK UP.

>> LOOKING UP AT THE NIGHT SKY

IS A REMINDER THAT WE'RE NOT THE

CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE THERE IS

A BUNCH OF THINGS UP THERE THAT

HE WENT DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO.

IT REMIND MESS TO BE HUMBLE.

>> I REMEMBER WHEN MY FATHER

RETIRED FROM WORK AND HE ENDED

UP WITH A TELESCOPE AND A MAP OF

STARS IN HIS SUN ROOM AND SEEING

HIS LOVE OF IT, YOU CAN SEE WHY

PEOPLE ALL OVER THE STATE ARE

GETTING INTO THIS.

IF YOU WANT MORE INFO ABOUT ABOUT THE

LAST STORY, HEAD OVER TO INDIANA

INDIANAJOURNAL.COM.

CORDEN WAS PICKED AS THE FIRST

STATE CAPITOL IN 1816, CAN YOU

TELL US WHAT CORDON WAS LIKE AT

THAT TIME?

>> IT WAS A SMALL TOWN FOUNDED

IN 1808, FOUNDED BY WILLIAM

HENRY HARRISON, SO IT WITH AS

SMALL TOWN WITH 600 FAMILIES

LIVING HERE.

>> HOW DID THE FIRST STATE HOUSE

COME TO BE HERE?

>> WELL, WE BECAME THE

TERRITORIAL CAPITAL BECAUSE

CORDON WAS MORE CENTRALLY

LOCATED GIVEN WHERE THE

POPULATION WAS AT THAT TIME.

AFTER 1813, THEY WORKED TOWARDS

STATEHOOD AND THAT IS HOW IN

1816, WHEN INDIANA BECAME A

STATE, CORDON WAS THE NATURAL

PLACE FOR THE CAPITOL.

>> CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE

BUILDING?

>> IT WAS INTENDED TO BE THE

HARRISON COUNTY COURTHOUSE, BUT

WHEN CORDON BECAME THE FIRST

STATE HOUSE, IT WAS CHOSEN FOR

THE STATE CAPITOL.

>> HOW IS THE BUILDING USED AT

THAT TIME.

>> IT WAS SHARED BY THE COUNTY

OFFICES AND THE GOVERNMENT, SO

THIS WAS USED AT THE HOUSE OF HOUSE OF

REPRESENTATIVES, ORIGINALLY 29

MEMBERS.

TWO ROOMS ABOVE US WITH 10

SENATORS AND THE SUPREME COURT

WITH THREE JUSTICES.

>> THANK YOU FOR HAVING US

TODAY.

WE'LL BE BACK TO TALK WITH YOU

IN A LITTLE BIT, MAYBE ABOUT WHY

THE STATE CAPITOL WAS MOVED

AFTER A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME,

BUT FIRST, WE'RE HEADED TO

MUNCIE TO MEET THE DRIVING FORCE

BEHIND LIGHT SKATEBOARDS.

>> WHILE I WAS USING DRUGS

HEAVILY, I STOPPED SKATEBOARDING

AND I STOPPED DOING A LOT OF

THINGS I CARED ABOUT, BUT ONCE

MY WIFE AND I GOT CLEAN FROM

DRUG, THE OLD PASSIONS I HAD

CAME BACK AND I PICKED UP

SKATEBOARDING AGAIN AND I WANTED

TO HAVE A SKATE SHOP WHEN I WAS

A KID AND MY DAD HELPED ME OPEN

THE SKATE SHOP.

THE REASON I CHOSE THAT NAME

BECAUSE I FELT LIKE I HAD BEEN

GIVEN BACK A GIFT OF LIFE AND MY

FAMILY AND LIFE GIVEN BACK TO ME

THAT I DIDN'T NECESSARILY

DESERVE AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE

HAD.

THERE ARE OTHER REASONS, BUT I

CAN'T ARTICULATE IT THAT WELL,

BUT THAT IS THE GIST OF IT, LIFE

SKATEBOARD.

>> SO I GOT INTO

SKATEBOARDING -- NOW, THIS IS

WHY I GOT INTO SKATEBOARDING?

IS THAT WHAT THIS ONE IS?

OK, AS A KID, I NEVER GOT INTO

ORGANIZED SPORTS.

MAYBE I DIDN'T LIKE THE RULES.

MAYBE I HAVE BEEN A REBEL, I

LIKED DOING MY OWN THING.

I HAVE BEEN SELF EMPLOYED PRETTY

MUCH MY WHOLE LIFE.

I STARTED SKATEBOARDING IN THE

MID 1980'S.

MY BROTHER AND SISTER HAD

SKATEBOARDS AND WE USED TO PLAY

OUTSIDE IN THE 1980'S.

I REMEMBER THE FREEDOM OF RIDING

ON A SKATEBOARD, THE FREEDOM OF

SELF EXPRESSION THERE WERE NO

RULES, NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO

DO IT.

YOU COULD ADAPT IT TO ANYTHING.

THERE IS NOTHING ELSE QUITE LIKE

IT, SO I FELL IN LOVE WITH THAT

FEELING AND GOT MORE AND MORE

INTO IT AND I MET OTHER PEOPLE

THAT DID IT AND I STILL HAVE

FRIENDSHIPS, 20-30 YEARS BUILT

AROUND SKATEBOARDING, SO IT HAS HAS

BEEN A HUGE PART OF MY LIFE AND

I FORGOT THE REST OF THE

QUESTION.

THE PROCESS OF MAKING A

SKATEBOARD.

I STARTED MAKING SKATEBOARDS IN

LATE 2012.

A FRIEND OF MINE, ACTUALLY HAD A

MOLD HE BOUGHT ON CRAIG'S LIST.

IT WAS A DIY MOLD AND WAS LIKE

HERE, TRY THIS.

I THINK IT SAT IN MY SHOP FOR

QUITE A WHILE AND ONE DAY I WAS

LIKE, I'M GOING TO TRY THAT.

I ALWAYS WANTED TO MAKE A

SKATEBOARD.

I DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD GO

ANYWHERE AND WHAT CAME OUT WAS

PRETTY AWESOME.

I HAD BEEN DOING WOODWORKING FOR

SEVERAL YEARS AND KNOW MY WAY

AROUND WOOD AND TOOLS AND JUST

FIGURED IT OUT.

BASICALLY, YOU START WITH SEVEN

APPLIES OF 1/16-INCH OF MAPLE

VENEER AND I HAND ROLL THE GLUE

ON EACH VENEER, STACK THEM

TOGETHER, PUT THEM IN A MOLD,

WHICH IS IN A HYDRAULIC PRESS,

CRANK DOWN THE JACK REALLY TIGHT

ONCE IT IS IN THERE.

I LET IT CURE FOR FOUR HOURS

MINIMUM, BUT A LOT OF TIMES, I

LET IT STAY IN THERE OVERNIGHT

AND THEN I LET IT CURE BEFORE I

DRILL, I DRILL ALL FROM THE

DRILL PRESS AND I PUT THAT UNCUT

BLANK ON ONE OF THE TEMPLATES OF

THE SHAPES I CREATED AND I CUT

THOSE OUT WITH A ROUTER, A PIN

ROUTER AND A ROUTER TABLE.

I EDGE SAND TO GET THE EDGES A

LITTLE CLEANER AND THEN I ROUTE

WITH THE PALM ROUTER TO GET THE

ROUND OVER ON THE EDGES ALL THE

WAY AROUND.

FROM THAT POINT, I MOVE ON TO

DIFFERENT STAGES OF SANDING,

ONCE I'M HAPPY WITH THAT, IT IS

READY FOR GRAPHICS.

I APPLY THE GRAPHICS WITH ONE OF

THE BLOCK, THEY ARE LIKE BLOCK

CUTTING AND THAT IS HOW WE APPLY

AND ROLL INK THAT THAT IS ON THE

BOTTOM OF THE BOARDS.

THE LAST PHASE IS A CLEAR COAT.

SO YOU'RE ROLLING, RIGHT?

SKATEBOARDERS LOOK AT THE WORLD

THROUGH A DIFFERENT LENS.

WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING AROUND, YOU

SEE A PARKING CURVE AND EVERYONE

LOOKS LIKE A SKATE SPOT AND YOU

SEE HOW YOU MIGHT ADAPT TO THAT.

I THINK A LOT OF SKATEBOARDERS

USED TO LOOK AT OTHER THINGSES

IN LIFE THROUGH THE SAME LENS.

MAYBE IT IS A CERTAIN

PERSONALITY DRAWN TO

SKATEBOARDING, I'M NOT REALLY

SURE, BUT THINKING OF THINGS IN

YOUR OWN UNIQUE WAY.

I KEEP LOOKING AT THE CAMERA.

I'M SORRY.

>> THE PRODUCER OF THAT PIECE IS

TELLING ME ALL OF THE WOOD USED

IN THE STATE WORD SKATEBOARD IS SOURCED FROM

INDIANA, SO TRULY A HOMEGROWN

PRODUCT.

IF SKATEBOARDING ISN'T YOUR

THING, HE DESIGNS AND BUILDS

FURNITURE AND CAB BETS AND CABINETS AS WELL.

WE ARE JOINED BY LAURA SPALDING.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING US TODAY.

I MENTIONED EARLIER THIS WAS

ONLY THE STATE CAPITOL FOR A

LITTLE WHILE, CAN YOU TALK TO US

ABOUT WHY IT MOVED?

>> SURE, THE 1816 CONSTITUTION

STIPULATED THAT CORDON WOULD

STAY THE STATE CAPITOL UNTIL IT

WAS MOVED BY LAW BECAUSE

LAWMAKERS KNEW THE POPULATION

WOULDN'T STAY TOWARDS THE

SOUTHERN PART OF THE STATE.

THEY WANTED TO KEEP THE CAPITOL

IN THE CENTER OF THE POPULATION

AND THAT IS WHY THEY FOUNDED THE

TOWN OF INDIANAPOLIS TO BE THE

NEW STATE CAPITAL.

>> WHEN THE STATE CAPITOL MOVED,

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BUILDING?

>> IT BECAME THE HARRISON COUNTY

COURTHOUSE, SO IT WAS USED AS A

GOVERNMENT BUILDING FOR OVER 100

YEARS UNTIL THEY BUILT THE NEW

ONE.

>> WHAT IS IT USED FOR TODAY?

>> TODAY, IT IS A STATE HISTORIC

SITE AS PART OF THE INDIANA

MUSEUM AND STATE HISTORIC SITE

SYSTEM.

IT IS AN HISTORIC SITE WHERE

FAMILIES AND STUDENTS CAN COME

AND LEARN HOW INDIANA GOT

STARTED AND SEE THE IMPORTANT

BUILDINGS THAT HAD SUCH AN

IMPORTANT LASTING IMPACT ON THE

STATE THAT WE KNOW TODAY.

>> YOU HAVE A LOT OF DIFFERENT

ARTIFACTS HERE, IS THAT CORRECT?

>> I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT

ARTIFACT IS THE BUILDING ITSELF.

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL BUILDING

AND IT HAS THE WOODWORK AND THE

STRUCTURE ITSELF.

>> CAN YOU TALK A BIT ABOUT THE

CONSTITUTION?

>> IT IS A HOOSIER SYMBOL AND

THE TRADITION IS WHEN OUR

INDIANA FOUNDING FATHERS WRITING

THE CONSTITUTION, IT WAS SO WARM

IN THE LITTLE BUILDING THEY WERE

WORKING ON AND THEY WENT OUTSIDE

AND HAD THEIR COMMITTEE MEETINGS

IN THE SHADE OF THE ELM TREE AND

IT BECAME KNOWN AS THE

CONSTITUTION ELM AND BECAME ONE

OF THE MOST PHOTOGRAPHED TREES.

IT PASSED AWAY IN THE 1920'S,

BUT BECAUSE IT WAS SO IMPORTANT,

THEY DID NOT CUT IT DOWN, THEY

PRESERVED THE TRUNK OF THE TREE

AND BUILT A MONUMENT OVER IT.
