>> COMING UP.

>> TAKE A TRIP TO THE MIDAMERICA

WINDMILL MUSEUM IN KENDALLVILLE.

>> MEET THE MASCOT MAVEN AT

INDY'S AVANT-GARDE MASCOT.

>> AND TAKE A LOOK AT A FEW

JACK-O'-LANTERNS.

>> THAT'S ALL ON THIS EPISODE OF

"JOURNEY INDIANA"!

>> WELCOME TO "JOURNEY INDIANA."

I'M ASHLEY DILLARD.

>> AND I'M BRANDON WENTZ AND WE

ARE COMING TO YOU FROM CORDON,

INDIANA, IN INDIANA'S LONGEST

CAVE.

INDIANA CAVERNS PART OF THE

BRICKLEY CAVE SYSTEM HOSTS

AMAZING WATERFALLS AND DIVERSE

CAVE LIFE AND A RICH HISTORY.

>> THAT'S RIGHT.

AND WE'LL SHOW YOU MORE OF

INDIANA CAVERNS IN JUST A BIT

BUT FIRST, WE ARE HEADED NORTH

TO KENDALLVILLE FOR A LOOK AT A

FORMER ICON OF THE INDIANA

LANDSCAPE.

PRODUCER JASON PEAR HAS THE

STORY.

>> IF YOU THINK ABOUT WINDMILLS

IN INDIANA TODAY, THIS MIGHT

JUST BE THE IMAGE THAT COMES TO

MIND.

FIELDS OF TURBINES, LIKE THESE

IN MADISON COUNTY, HARNESS THE

WIND AND PROVIDE POWER TO THE

SURROUNDING AREA.

AROUND A CENTURY AGO, THE SCENE

LOOKED MORE LIKE.

THIS THIS WAS THE ERA OF THE

AGRICULTURAL WINDMILL AND NEARLY

EVERY FARM HAD ONE.

>> WIND POWER WAS VERY

IMPORTANT, BECAUSE YOU HAD WATER

TO COOK WITH, CATTLE, TO TAKE A

BATH.

IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE THE WINDMILLS

BACK THEN, THERE WAS NO WAY TO

GET WATER UP FROM THE GROUND.

>> THE WINDMILL WAS ALSO AN

INTEGRAL PART OF THE WESTWARD

EXPANSION.

>> THEY WOULD HAVE WINDMILLS

AGAINST THE TRACKS, AND THEY

WOULD WIND THE STEAM ENGINE AND

THE ENGINE WOULD GO INTO THE

TANK AND THEY WOULD FILL THE

STEAM ENGINE BUT AT THE SAME

TIME THE WINDMILL COULD ALSO

TAKE CARE OF THE CATTLE IN THAT

AREA.

SO IT WAS A DUAL PURPOSE

WINDMILL.

>>> AND FOR MORE THAN A QUARTER

CENTURY, A UNIQUE, NEARLY ONE OF

A KIND MUSEUM IN NORTHWEST

INDIANA HAS BEEN KEEPING THIS

HISTORY ALIVE.

>> WE ARE IN KENDALLVILLE,

INDIANA.

WE ARE ONE OF TWO MUSEUMS OPEN

UNTIL THE UNITED STATES.

THERE'S ANOTHER ONE DOWN IN

TEXAS.

MAY 23rd, 1994, WE HAD A GRAND

OPENING OF OUR MUSEUM, WHEN WE

FIRST STARTED, WE JUST HAD TEN

WINDMILLS.

WE ARE UP OVER 50 SOME IN

DISPLAY AT THIS POINT, AND WE

HAVE MORE TO GO UP.

SO WE HAVE JUST GAINED A LOT

THROUGH 25 YEARS AND WHEN WE

LOOK BACK, IT'S AMAZING WHAT YOU

CAN ACCOMPLISH.

>> THE MUSEUM, LOCATED ON

40 ACRES JUST EAST OF

KENDALLVILLE, IS RUN ENTIRELY BY

VOLUNTEERS.

WE WORK TO MAINTAIN THE GROUNDS,

GIVE TOURS, AND STAFF THE GIFT

SHOP.

AND NOT SURPRISINGLY, A LOT OF

VOLUNTEER HOURS GO TOWARDS

MAINTAIN AND RESTORING THE

WINDMILLS THEMSELVES.

>> AND IT'S VERY INTENSIVE.

THE ONE WE HAVE OVER HERE, THAT

WAS A WOODEN WINDMILL TOOK 160

MAN HOWERS HOURS TO REASSEMBLE AND GET

BACK TO NEW ONE.

WE HAVE ANOTHER METAL ONE THAT

TOOK 100 HOURS.

IT'S VERY TIME INTENSIVE AND

YOU'VE GOT TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE

DOING.

>> SO WHY KENDALLVILLE?

>> AT ONE TIME, THERE WAS 90

WINDMILL COMPANIES WITHIN AN

80-MILE RADIUS OF KENDALLVILLE.

THIS WAS INN COO OF A HUB WITH

INDIANA, MICHIGAN, AND OHIO.

>> THE LARGEST OF THESE 90

COMPANIES WAS KENDALLVILLE'S OWN

FLINT AND WALLEN, AT ONE TIME

THE SECOND LARGEST MANUFACTURER

OF WINDMILLS IN THE COUNTRY.

>> AND THEIR FIRST MADE WINDMILL

WAS IN 1878.

THEY QUIT MAKING THEM IN 1954.

>> THERE WERE 11 DIFFERENT

MODELS FOR FLINT AND WALLEN

WINDMILL, EACH AN IMPROVEMENT ON

THE FIRST GENERATION.

>> WHEN THEY FIRST STARTED

MAKING THEM, THEY WERE WOOD

WINDMILLS, THAT'S WHAT EVERYBODY

DID.

AND THEN LATER ON THEY GOT INTO

THE METAL WINDMILL AND WE HAVE

ALL 11 IN OUR COLLECTION.

WE DON'T HAVE THEM ALL UP YET

BUT WE HAVE 11.

WE HAVE ONE OUTSIDE THAT IS

HOOKED UP TO A WELL.

IT'S THE ONLY ONE WE HAVE HOOKED

UP TO A WELL.

IT IS THE LAST WINDMILL OFF THE

ASSEMBLY LINE OF FLINT AND

WALLING.

AND THAT'S A VERY NEAT FEATURE

FOR US TO HAVE.

>> FLINT AND WALLING, WHICH LONG

AGO MADE THE SWITCH FROM

WINDMILLS TO SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS

IS VERY MUCH A PART OF THE

KENDALLVILLE AND THE WINDMILLS

ARE VERY MUCH A PART OF THE

MIDWEST WINDMILL MUSEUM BUT THEY

ARE NOT THE ONLY WINDMILLS YOU

WILL FIND HERE.

IN FACT, THE MAJORITY ARE FROM

OTHER FACTORS.

>> WE ARE A WINDMILL MUSEUM THAT

FEATURES THREE DIFFERENT TYPES

OF WATER WINDMILLS.

A WATER WINDMILL THAT MOST

PEOPLE SEE THAT THE AMISH AMISH USE

TODAY.

ANOTHER ONE IS A POWER WINDMILL,

WHICH WILL RUN A SHAFT FROM A

WINDMILL TO A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT

AND RUN A CORN SHELLER OR A SAW

OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

AND THEN WE HAVE THE ROBERTSON

PULSE WINDMILL WHICH IS A

GRINDING WINDMILL.

AIR MOTOR MADE VERY MANY

DIFFERENT MODELS OF WINDMILLS.

SO DIDN'T MAKE AS MANY MODELS OR

ONLY EVER MADE ONE.

>> A UNIQUE MUSEUM, CELEBRATING

AND SHARING A UNIQUE PART OF

HOOSIER HISTORY.

>> WE HAVE HAD PEOPLE FROM ALL

50 STATES.

WE HAD 44 FOREIGN COUNTRIES

REPRESENT THE PEOPLE HERE, WHICH

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, THAT'S

A LOT OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE

VISITING FROM YOU ALL AROUND THE

WORLD.

SO IT'S BEEN A NEAT ATTRACTION

TO OUR COMMUNITY.

>> YOU KNOW WHAT I LOVE ABOUT

THAT STORY, BRANDON?

>> IT ACTUALLY CAME FROM ONE OF

OUR VIEWERS.

>> AND WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR

MORE FROM YOU.

JUST GO OVER TO

JOURNEYINDIANA.ORG IF YOU HAVE

ANY STORIES OF YOUR OWN.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFO ON

INDIANA'S HISTORIC WINDMILLS,

YOU CAN GO TO THEIR WEBSITE.

AND NOW WE ARE JOINED BY SARA

BLEVINS.

THE INTERPRETIVE STAFF MEMBER

HERE AT THE INDIANA CAVERNS.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

>> NO PROBLEM.

>> WE ARE BEGINNING OF THE CAVE,

BUT THERE'S A LOT MORE TO IT,

RIGHT?

>> YES.

THE WHOLE TOUR IS ABOUT AN HOUR

20 MINUTE OR AN HOUR 30 MINUTE.

YOU WALK PART OF IT AND YOU BOAT

PART OF IT.

SO THROUGHOUT THE WALKING PART,

YOU WILL SEE THE FORMATIONS LIKE

YOU SEE AROUND US NOW AND

THERE'S A LOT OF ICE AGED BONES

AND FOSSILS ALONG THE WAY.

>> IT'S PRETTY WARM OUTSIDE

STILL, BUT IT'S COOL DOWN HERE.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE TEMPERATURE

IS DOWN HERE URGELY? >> USUALLY.

>> THE CAVE STAYS 56 DEGREES

YEAR ROUND.

>> AND THERE WAS ALSO A MASSIVE

AMOUNT OF BONES DISCOVERED AS

WELL.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT?

>> YES, IT'S ONE OF THE LARGEST

DEPOSITS OF ICE AGED BONES.

YOU WILL SEE A LOT OF DIFFERENT

ICE AGED BONES.

>> AND THERE'S A LOT OF LIFE

DOWN HERE.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE LIFE

WE MIGHT SEE GOING THROUGH THE

CAVE?

>> THERE ARE A LOT OF MODERN DAY

CAVE CREATURES.

IT'S CONSIDERED TO BE A

BIOLOGICAL HOTSPOT TO THE WORLD

WHICH HERE IN THIS CAVE, WE HAVE

21 DIFFERENT SPECIES OF

TROGLOBYTES.

THEY HAVE NO EYES OR PIGMENTS.

AND YOU ARE LIKELY TO SEE THE

BLIND CAVE CRAWFISH.

AND YOU HAVE TROGOPHYLES.

AND THE SALAMANDERS BRIGHT

ORANGE WITH BLACK SPECKLES ON

THEM.

WE HAVE ANOTHER CLASS OF CAVE

ANIMALS, THEY ARE LIKE BATS,

BEARS, THINGS LIKE THAT.

NOW WITH THE ICE AGED ENTRANCE

BEING CLOSED, THE CLOSEST

NATURAL ENTRANCE IS A FEW MILES

AWAY.

YOU USUALLY DON'T GET THOSE CAVE

GUESTS COMING THIS DEEP INTO THE

CAVE.

>> WELL, I'M GLAD ABOUT THAT!

>> NOW, I SUPPOSE YOU SPENT A

GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME DOWN HERE.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPOT?

>> MY FAVORITE SPOT THROUGHOUT

THE TOUR ROUTE, I THINK IS

REALLY BIG BONE MOUNTAIN.

IT'S JUST A HUGE ROOM.

THERE'S SO MANY FORMATIONS.

YOU HAVE ALL THE BONES AND THE

ICE AGED BONES AND THERE'S SO

MUCH GOING ON ON BIG BONED

MOUNTAIN.

>> WE'LL BE BACK BACK TO TALK TO YOU

ABOUT OTHER THINGS GOING ON.

WE ARE GOING BACK ABOVE GROUND

AND UP I-95 TO A UNIQUE WORKSHOP

THAT CRAFTS MASCOTS FOR COLLEGES

AND MORE.

JASON PEAR HAS THE STORY.

>> I MOSTLY GREW UP IN NEW YORK,

QUEENS, JAMAICA QUEENS.

WHEN I WAS IN NEW YORK, MY

FRIENDS AND I WOULD HANG OUT AT

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART.

SO HE WOULD DO THE BIG SOFT

SCULPTURES.

HE WAS ALL ABOUT MAKING SOFT

SCULPTURES.

SO IF YOU MADE OFF THE ASHTRAYS

AND SOFT TOILETS AND SEEING THAT

WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME.

AND I KIND OF -- I STARTED

MAKING SOFT SCULPTURED PLANTS

AND SOFT SCULPTURED THIS AND

THAT.

SO THAT'S HOW I GOT INTO REALLY

KIND OF ART SEWING.

>> EVENTUALLY JENNIFER MOVED

FROM THE EAST COAST TO THE WEST.

>> SOMEHOW OR OTHER, I WOUND UP

IN SEATTLE, THERE WAS A GROUP

CALLED FRIENDS OF THE RAG.

AND WE MADE THESE HIGH CONCEPT

CRAZY COSTUMES FOR EVENTS AROUND

SEATTLE, INCLUDING THE OPENING

OF THE SEATTLE AQUARIUM, WHERE I

MADE -- WELL, SEATTLE IS KNOWN

FOR SALMON.

AND SALMON ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR

SEX LIFE.

THEY GO UPSTREAM AND SPAWN.

AND SO I MADE THE SEXY SALMON.

THAT WAS ONE OF MY FIRST

PROJECTS AND IT WAS KIND OF A

MASCOT.

FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS OF THE

SEXY SALMON, JENNIFER'S PHONE

BEGAN TO RING.

>> I STARTED GETTING CALLS FOR

MASCOTS.

THE FIRST ONE WAS A BIG

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE FOR A

TEENSY CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE

COMPANY IN BERKELEY AND THAT WAS

THE BEGINNING.

>> IT WAS THE BEGINNING.

AVANT-GARDE, ORIGINALLY HEADED

IN BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA, NOW

LOCATED IN INDIANAPOLIS'

BUSINESS AND ARTS CENTER.

>> WE ARE A SMALL BATCH ARTISNAL

MASCOT.

WE ARE INTERESTED IN OUR

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR CLEANS

AND KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THEM.

BECAUSE IF THE MASCOT DOESN'T

LOOK GOOD, THE CLIENT DOESN'T

LOOK GOOD.

YOU KNOW, IT'S IMPORTANT FOR

THEM TO ALWAYS BE, YOU KNOW,

JUST PRETTY MUCH IN TOP FORM.

SO WE BUZZ THEM EVERY SIX MONTHS

OR SO AND SAY, HOW IS YOUR

MASCOT.

>> THERE'S NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE

DOING WHAT AVANT-GARDE DOES.

>> IT'S A TEENSY WORLD.

I THINK THERE'S 10 OR 15 IN THE

COUNTRY.

YOU HAVE TO THINK

THREE-DIMENSIONALLY.

I SAY THINK WITH YOUR HANDS, AND

IT'S AN UNUSUAL SKILL NOW.

>> THE UNUSUALLY SKILLED CREW IS

SMALL, JUST A FEW FOLKS,

INCLUDING JENNIFER'S DAUGHTER

ANN.

>> WHO HAS BEEN AROUND MASCOTS

ALL HER LIFE.

SHE NEVER INTENDED TO WORK HERE,

BUT I ASKED HER IF SHE COULD

WORK ABOUT, I DON'T KNOW, EIGHT

OR NINE YEARS AGO, JUST WORK FOR

A FEW MONTH AND SHE GRACIOUSLY

SAID YES.

AND SHE'S STILL HERE!

>> THE DESIGN, LIKE THIS ONE FOR

THE UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO, COMES

FROM TOM SAPP BASED IN ATLANTA.

>> HE'S SO GOOD.

IT REALLY PULLING IN WHAT THEY

WANT.

WHAT COLORS ARE THEIR LOGOS.

WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO PUSH?

WHAT DO THEY IMAGINE AND HE'S

ABLE TO MAKE A DRAWING.

>> ONCE WE HAVE THE DRAWING --

WHICH IS REALLY THE MOST

IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE CAN'T MAKE

A MASCOT IF WE DON'T KNOW WHAT

IT IS.

I MEAN, SO WE GET THE DRAWING,

AND THEN WE TAKE OFF.

WE SCULPT, WE PATTERN, WE REALLY

PULL IN ALL OF THE ARE SKILLS IN

THE ART WORLD THAT YOU NEED.

WE'RE WORKING VERY, VERY LOW

TECH.

ARE YOU KIDDING?

A RULER WITH INCHES AND A PENCIL

ON CRAFT PAPER.

THAT'S WHERE WE START.

IT'S PRETTY PRIMITIVE.

BUT WHERE WE END IS A COMPLETE

FINISHED CHARACTER THAT PEOPLE

BELIEVE IS REAL.

>> OVER THE YEARS, DAVE MADE THEY HAVE

MADE THOUSANDS OF MASCOTS.

>> AND A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE GONE

TO THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM.

WE MAKE REX.

AND THERE WERE SONS OF TONS OF SOCCER

FANS.

WE MAKE FANS FOR I.U. NORTHWEST,

JINX, JAWS AND JAZZY, FOR THE

IUPUI.

>> AND FOR ALL OF THESE, THERE

IS ONE COMMON DENOMINATOR.

>> IF WE DON'T CREATE IT, IT

DOESN'T EXIST.

YOU DIDN'T BUY MASCOT SHOES.

WE MAKE THE SHOES.

WE MAKE THE SHOE LACES.

IT TAKES FOREVER!

I MEAN, PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY HOW

LONG DOES IT TAKE?

AND I HAVE TO SAY A GAGILLION

HOUR.

YOU CAN'T THINK OF A DETAIL THAT

WE HAVEN'T TALKED ABOUT IT AND

DONE IT.

>> BUT DESPITE IT, THEY WOULDN'T

HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY.

>> I LOVE IT BEGINNING TO END.

I FEEL LIKE I WAS CALLED TO IT.

I LOVE IT BEGINNING TO END.

>> WAS IT BEING AROUND

HALLOWEEN, COULD YOU IMAGINE

WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO GO IN

THERE AND FIND A COSTUME.

>> IT WOULD BE LIKE A KID IN A

CANNY STORE.

>> THIS IS THE SECOND STORY THAT

WE HAVE DONE ABOUT MASCOTS.

MAYBE THIS IS OUR NEW THING AT

"JOURNEY INDIANA," WE ONLY DO

STORIES ABOUT MASCOTS.

>> AND IF YOU NEED YOUR OWN

MASCOT, GO OVER TO

AVANT-GARB.COM FOR MORE

INFORMATION.

>> AND NOW WE ARE JOINED BY

SARAH BLEVINS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING US.

>> I DON'T KNOW IF I WOULD EVER

GET SICK OF BEING DOWN HERE.

I KNOW THERE ARE A BUNCH OF

ATTRACTIONS UPSTAIRS.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THEM?

>> WE OFFER A LOT OF DIFFERENT

THINGS, BESIDES THE SHOWCASE, WE

HAVE A WILDLIFE TOUR AND WE HAVE

GEM STONE MINING WITH YOU GET TO

GO THROUGH ALL THE SAND AND THE

WATER AND PICK OUT YOUR FOSSILS

AND THE GEMSTONES AND THERE'S

THE CAVERN OF THE SABER TOOTH,

IT'S TO INTRODUCE KIDS TO THE

SPORT OF CAVING.

THEY GET TO WITHDRAWAL AROUND

LIKE REAL CAVERS WITH ALL

EQUIPMENT.

WE HAVE A LOT OF DIFFERENT

WALKING TRAILS.

AND WE HAVE THE BAT CHASER

OPENING.

>> CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THAT?

I NOTICED THAT AS WE DROVE UP, I

WOULD LOVE TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT

THAT ENTAILS.

>> SO THE BAT CHASER IS AN

AERIAL COASTER.

SO IT'S A CROSS BETWEEN A ZIP

LINE AND A ROLLER COSTER.

SO IT'S GRAVITY POWERED, LIKE A

ZIP LINE, AND YOU ARE HARNESSED

IN LIKE YOU WOULD FOR A ZIP LINE

BUT RATHER GOING ACROSS A CABLE,

YOU ARE HOOKED INTO A TROLLEY

ALONG A STEEL RAIL WITH ALL THE

TWISTS AND TURNS OF A ROLLER

COASTER.

>> I THINK THAT WILL BE FOR YOU,

BRANNON.

I DON'T DO HEIGHTS ALL THAT

MUCH.

>> I DO!

>> SARAH, IF PEOPLE WANTED TO

LEARN MORE ABOUT INDIANA

CAVERNS, WHERE CAN THEY GO?

>> GO TO OUR WEBSITE,

INDIANACAVERNS.COM.

>>> WELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR

TALKING WITH US, SARAH.

>> THANKS FOR COMING.

FINALLY, WE ARE HEADED A LITTLE

FURTHER SOUTH ACROSS THE RIVER

AND OUT OF INDIANA FOR THE FIRST

TIME ON THIS SHOW.

TO SEE THOUSANDS OF PUMPKINS

LINING A LOUISVILLE TRAIL.

PRODUCER JOHN TIM HAS THE STORY.

>> I DON'T KNOW OVER THE YEARS

HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE LOST THE

TRAIL.

IT'S STILL MAGICAL AND IT'S

AMAZING.

>> I GOT TO GLOW MORE ON THE

INSIDE WHEN I SEE MY FRIENDS, MY

ARTISTS, CREATE THINGS THAT ARE

CHANGING THE WORLD ONE PUMPKIN

AT A TIME.

>> YOU CAN'T DESCRIBE IT.

YOU JUST HAVE TO EXPERIENCE IT.

>> JACK-O'-LANTERN IS A THIRD OF

A MILE STROLL THROUGH THE LOVELY

IROQUOIS PARK WOODS WITH MORE

THAN 5,000 ARTISTICALLY CARVED

PUMPKINS, SET TO THEMES AND

MUSIC AND SPECIAL LIGHTING AND

THIS YEAR'S THEME IS THE FOUR

SEASONS.

>> WE USE A BROAD ENVELOPE TO

KIND OF ENCAPSULATE THE PUMPKIN

SHOW AND THAT GIVES ARTISTS A

ROUGH GUIDELINE IN THE ABILITY

TO USE YOUR OWN CREATIVITY TO

COME UP WITH THEMES FOR THE

PUMPKIN.

>> THIS EVENT BENEFITS

LOUISVILLE PUBLIC PARK.

SO A PORTION OF EVERY TICKET

SOLD FOR THIS EVENT COMES TO THE

FOUNDATION AND IS INVESTED BACK

INTO OUR PUBLIC PARKS.

WE CONTRACT WITH PASSION FOR

PRODUCTIONS WHICH IS THE

PRODUCTION COMPANY THAT CREATES

THIS INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE.

ON THE TRAIL, AT ANY GIVEN TIME,

THERE ARE ABOUT 5,000 PUMPKINS,

BUT WE ARE PUTTING PRODUCE IN

THE WOODS.

SO THEY DON'T LAST VERY LONG.

SO THEY ARE ROTATED OUT OVER THE

COURSE OF THE SHOW.

THESE BEAUTIFUL PUMPKINS THAT

YOU SEE BEHIND ME THAT THEY JUST

STARTED TO WORK ON, WESTBOUND

CARVED AND GUTTED -- WILL BE

CARVED AND GUTTED AND PUT ON THE

TRAIL.

THEY WILL LAST THREE TO SEVEN

DAYS.

THE ARTISTS ARE CONSTANTLY

WORKING ON THEM TO KEEP THE

TRAIL FRESH AND NEW.

>> WE HAVE ABOUT 12 FULL-TIME

ARTISTS AND A GOOD EIGHT TO TEN

PART-TIME ARTISTS WHICH COME IN

AT NIGHT AND WORK FROM ANYWHERE

FROM 8:00 TO 2:00 IN THE

MORNING.

>> THE PROCESS FOR ME, FIRST, IS

TO FIND AN IMAGE.

AN IMAGE THAT IS CONTRAST, THAT

THAT CONTRAST CREATES A CLARITY

ON THE PUMPKIN.

THE PUMPKIN IS ILLUMINATED FROM

THE INSIDE OUT AND YOUR BLACK

HAS TO BE BLACK AND YOUR LIGHTS

LIGHT.

AFTER THAT, IT'S MAPPING IT OUT

ON THE PUMPKIN AND THEN

LISTENING TO GREAT MUSIC AND

HANGING AROUND WITH A BUNCH OF

GREAT FRIENDS THAT YOU HAVEN'T

SEEN IN A YEAR AND PUSHING THE

PAINT ASH ON THE PUMPKIN.

THE FINAL PUZZLE PIECE IS, OF

COURSE, CARVING THE PUMPKIN AND

THAT REALLY BRINGS IT ALL

TOGETHER WHERE YOU CAN HIGHLIGHT

YOUR HIGHLIGHTS AND CREATE

EXPLOSIONS AND CREATE EVERYTHING

FROM SLIME TO FIRE, TO

TRANSPARENCY.

THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT

EFFECTS THAT YOU CAN USE THE

PUMPKIN CANVAS FOR.

IT'S KIND OF A SAYING IN THE

PUMPKIN FACILITY, DON'T BE

AFRAID TO PUSH THE PAINT ON THE

PUMPKIN AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO

CARVE IT EITHER.

I MEAN, WHAT'S THE WORST THAT

CAN HAPPEN?

YOU COULD RUIN IT?

NO WAY!

MY FAVORITE STEP IS THE CARVING

PART BECAUSE THAT IS THE ICING

ON THE CAKE OR THE FINISH WORK

IN THE HOUSE.

WORST PART ABOUT THESE PUMPKINS

IS THEY ARE HEAVY AND I HAVE TO

LIFT THEM AGAIN AND AGAIN AND

AGAIN.

>> LAST YEAR WE HAD MORE THAN

100,000 PEOPLE COME THROUGH THE

SHOW, IN THE 27 DAYS THAT WE

WERE OPEN.

60% OF THE PEOPLE WHO COME TO

JACK-O'-LANTERN SPECTACULAR IN

LOUISVILLE, DRIVE UP TO FOUR

HOURS.

ONLY 40% OF THE FOLKS THAT WE

SEE ARE LOCAL.

>> WE HAVE AUDIENCES COMING TO

SEE PURELY FOR A FUN ENCHANTMENT

AND THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT

THAT.

WE NEED A LITTLE BIT MORE FUNNY.

>> ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO

DO IS TO WALK THE TRAIL WITH

SOMEONE WHO IS SEEING IT FOR THE

FIRST TIME, BECAUSE THEY ARE

ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY.

>> JOY, HAPPINESS, LAUGHTER, ALL

OF THOSE EMOTIONS KIND OF WASH

OVER ME AS I WALK THROUGH THE

TRAIL.

JUST TO HEAR A LOT OF GRAND KIDS

TALKING TO THEIR GRANDPARENTS

AND GRANDPARENTS TALKING BACK TO

THEIR GRANDCHILDREN AND THE SHOW

REALLY IS A TEACHER.

AND IT'S A VERY RESOURCEFUL

TEACHER BECAUSE IT HAS A LITTLE

BIT OF SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY.

>> BRANDON, I LOVE HALLOWEEN

TIME!

AND IT MAKES ME REALLY NOSTALGIC

FOR CARVING PUMPKINS WITH MY

PARENTS AND ROASTING PUMPKIN

SEEDS AND EVERYTHING THAT GOES

ALONG WITH THAT.

>> YOU KNOW, LITTLE KNOWN FACT,

IF YOU GO THERE THE WEEK AFTER

THIS FESTIVAL, THEY HAVE THE

ANNUAL PUMPKIN PIE FESTIVAL --

THAT'S NOT TRUE.

IMAGINE IF IT WAS, TURNING ALL

THE PUMPKINS INTO PUMPKIN PIES

FOR THE NEXT EVENT.

>> IT CONTINUES THROUGH NOVEMBER 3rd AND YOU CAN GET

ALL THE INFO AT JACK-O'-LANTERN

LOUISVILLE.COM AND WE ENCOURAGE

YOU TO STAY CONNECTED WITH US.

>> JUST HEAD OVER TO "JOURNEY

INDIANA.ORG," THERE YOU CAN SEE

FULL EPISODES AND NETWORK WITH

US ON FACEBOOK AND AND YOUTUBE.

>> ARE YOU READY TO RELEASE YOUR

INNER BATMAN?

>> YES, I SET UP A LITTLE

STATION TO FIGHT CRIME.

I'M READY TO GO UP AND GIVE THIS

A SHOT.

>> A BIG SHOVE FOR YOU.

>> SURE!

>>> HI, ASHLEY!
