- Music inspires one to become more human

to me the word jazz means, I dare you.

- Music is the universal language of the soul.

The whole spectrum of human emotions

is there for us to experience.

And for me, music is the full expression.

- Everyone's really desperately seeking

for some thread of connectivity,

like me aren't you like me and I'm like you?

Like, aren't we more similar than different?

The love of this music really feels global.

- Music has no nationality, has no boundaries,

has no color.

Jazz belongs to you as much as it belongs to me.

- Musicians from all over the planet can come together,

not meet each other ever before,

and get on stage and make music together.

Jazz has just the perfect kind of music for inclusion.

- You have to remember

that there's only 12 notes that we have.

Everybody's had those same 12 notes for 500 years.

12! That's it.

And all over the world, they know it.

- When we go on that stage, we are having a conversation.

When it gels,

I live for that.

- All music is about love.

You can be angry, but you're not gonna stay angry for long

once you start playing.

And that's where the real humanity comes in.

- Jazz is a cultural passport of tolerance

and freedom.

- It's the thread that keeps us all together.

- Here's a music that really personifies freedom,

creativity, being in a moment.

There are influences from everywhere in jazz.

I mean, jazz is being expressed in every culture today.

That expression really culminated

in the International Jazz Day.

- Jazz has two basic components.

One is strictly about freedom, which is improvisation.

And the other is strictly about not freedom, which is swing.

So the freedom, improvisation part

is you make up your own thing

and you're encouraged to find your own identity.

The non-freedom is that other people

have their identities too.

So you have the responsibility

to nurture their identity with your own.

So you can't exactly do everything you want.

Jazz is an art form that says

that people will be reasonable if given opportunity.

- Life is improvisation,

the way we speak, it's improv.

You're having a conversation with someone

and you want to take the conversation somewhere else,

but you do it in a real caring and careful,

understanding kind of way, which is what jazz really is.

- All of us, we travel all around the world.

Music is almost a more primary language than words.

In my opinion, they should have put us on the front line

a long time ago.

You know what I mean?

We get it done.

And after we opened the door, then you guys can come in

with the words and see if you can not mess things up.

- Each year the celebration has gotten larger and larger.

There are so many events on April 30,

at the International Jazz Day.

It's phenomenal what's going on.

There are panel discussions, there are educational events,

there are events happening with ,

that are part of the International Jazz Day.

There are outreach programs in hospitals.

It's really what's the spirit

of International Jazz Day about, to bring people together,

give them a sense of hope and empowerment.

♪♪

- Because jazz came from the people who were oppressed,

because, look, that's this defiance.

Music has that kind of power.

It stands against injustice.

A little more than 50 years ago,

a group of young South African men

were arrested and thrown into prison

and sentenced to death for leading their people

in the fight against the apartheid.

A little over 20 years ago,

these same men were released from prison.

And when they came out, they were very old,

but their spirit wasn't broken.

And they said to us, "Don't burn your country down

like other people do when they get their freedom.

But instead, let us build this country

together with those who oppressed us before

and let us forgive them.

But we should never forget and never again,

in the future of this land, where one group of people

ever get to dominate another again.

And contrary to what a lot of naysayers

and unbelievers thought, two days ago, three days ago

on the 27th of April, 2015,

the people of South Africa

celebrated their 21stanniversary

as a free nation.

So when you see all of you stand up here

and shake a little booty,

just shake a little booty here for all those old geezers.

- Thank you so much.

- Hey.

I wanna say, Buenos noches,

a mi gente linda de Cuba.

Every April 30th, Jazz Day is celebrated

in 195 countries on all seven continents.

Jazz, born over a century ago,

is a musical art form embraced as a universal force

for peace, dialogue, and unity, regardless of borders,

distance, or differences.

International Jazz Day was created to demonstrate

that we can use the ethics of jazz as a diplomatic tool

to unite citizens from all corners of the globe.

And tonight, we're going to see, and we're going to

hear those ideals in action.

This is the spirit of International Jazz Day.

- It's very important, especially for African Americans

to understand the diaspora

and how it's been expressed culturally

in different parts of the world.

- When you hear the music, it just comes from the soul.

And it just takes me back to West Africa.

- It started at the turn of the century.

There were two ferries twice a day going back between

Havana and New Orleans.

And it had profound effect on the beat.

♪♪

- It's easy to get where you're going

if you know where you came from.

Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong,

Coltrane, and Charlie Parker.

Do you know who they are?

- Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan,

Betty Carter, all of them.

There's this whole thing of taking

this very noble tradition and,

you know, bringing it with respect.

This music includes everybody.

[jazz music]

[crowd cheering]

Oh, it's so wonderful to be here this evening

and to introduce a legendary musician,

a fellow countryman of mine, whose affinity for jazz

led him to write and record this song on his album,

"Nothing Like the Sun."

Joining him onstage, Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper,

Leona Lewis, Marcus Miller,

Terry Lynn Carrington, and guitar legend, Pat Metheny.

- The thing about improvising and learning jazz

is the first thing you learn is melody.

Because you realize you don't much at all about anything.

It's not easy thing to write or get to that place

where you become articulate spontaneously.

And eloquent and elegant.

This is something we don't have any control over.

All we can do is be ready for it.

- To create, you solo, you improvise,

you take these few notes and then you, you know,

make an incredible bouquet out of it.

Jazz is just a perfect kind of music for inclusion.

It allows you to have that room.

And it can be incredibly elastic.

We are warriors for peace.

We are fearless.

We embrace the gift of healing.

With our hearts and our minds,

we will give it to shave one love, one rhythm.

We are teachers.

We are healers.

We are seekers of truth.

We are called by spirit.

We are dreamers who do.

Fearless we are,

we are warrior for peace.

Fearless we are,

we transcend the fear of difference,

with courage, we look and we see one people

and we see what it is to be human.

Yes, we are fearless.

Blessed be and do take care.
