Herbie Hancock on His Quarantine Experience

The quarantine may be a negative experience, but jazz great Herbie Hancock reflects on how this could be a positive, reflective time for us all.

Gustavo Dudamel: You are healthy and you look wonderful.

How has quarantine been for you?

Herbie Hancock: Actually, for me,

it's been fine

in a way it's almost

like a big vacation

and I've had a chance to have dinners with my family

which I don't have that often when I'm travelling on the road,

all over the world.

Gustavo: Exactly, exactly.

Herbie: That's what's important.

I'm always looking for like...

what can I learn or what can I gain from this.

What's the bright side. What's the positive side

or how can I make this positive.

And so, that's made me search

for the positive.

And I think that's very important.

It's kept my spirits up

and kept me feeling like

I can encourage myself

and hopefully I can encourage other people.

Gustavo: We are busy travelling

or doing things...

in a non-stop journey.

In a prestissimo journey.

We are in kind of a moderato mood, no?

Herbie: Yeah, moderato.

I kinda like moderato.

Gustavo: Moderato, exactly.
