AS A YOUNG MAN ARRIVING IN

CHICAGO FOR THE 1893 WORLD'S

FAIR, HE WAS STRUCK BY THE

SKYSCRAPERS OF LOUIS SULLIVAN.

RETURNING HOME, HE RAILED

AGAINST THE LAVISHLY DECORATIVE

BUILDINGS OF "FIN-DE-SIECLE

VIENNA."

THE EFFORT WASTED IN DESIGNING

AND CREATING SUCH SUPERFLUOUS

ORNAMENT HE SAW AS NOTHING SHORT

OF A "CRIME."

HIS ESSAY "ORNAMENT AND CRIME"

ADVOCATED FOR THE SMOOTH AND

CLEAR SURFACES EXEMPLIFIED IN

HIS OWN DESIGNS.

THE EMPEROR WAS SO INCENSED WHEN

A NEW LOOS BUILDING WENT UP JUST

ACROSS FROM THE ENTRANCE TO THE

PALACE THAT HE REFUSED TO ENTER

OR LEAVE FROM THAT GATE EVER

AGAIN, AND SHUTTERED HIS WINDOWS

OVERLOOKING THE SQUARE SO THAT

HE DID NOT HAVE TO SEE THAT

HOUSE, LADY CAROLINE GORDON

IT CONTAINS AN ART COLLECTION

FORMED OVER TEN GENERATIONS,

INCLUDING THIS VAN DYCK; THESE

PRICELESS CANALETTO'S IN THE

LONG HALL; THE GOBELINS

TAPESTRIES, A GIFT TO THE THIRD

DUKE FROM LOUIS XV; AS WELL AS

THIS PICTURE OF RACEHORSES

EXERCISING BY THE CELEBRATED

ENGLISH PAINTER GEORGE STUBBS.

A RITE OF PASSAGE FOR YOUNG

MEMBERS OF THE ENGLISH

ARISTOCRACY WAS THE GRAND TOUR

OF EUROPE TO SOAK UP THE ART AND

CULTURE OF THE CONTINENT.

AN ADDED BENEFIT OF SENDING

HE COMMISSIONED THIS GOLDEN

CARRIAGE FOR HIS FORMAL ENTREE

INTO PARIS, AND IN A GRAND

PROCESSION OF 50 CARRIAGES TWO

DAYS LATER, INTO VERSAILLES.

THE PLAYFUL, CHERUBIC PAINTINGS

ON IT REPRESENT BOTH THE FOUR

ELEMENTS AND THE FOUR SEASONS.

EMBRACING COUPLES, AT FIRST

SHOCKED POLITE SOCIETY.

NEXT IN POPULARITY ON THE DANCE

FLOOR WOULD BE THE POLKA.

ORIGINATING IN BOHEMIA, BY THE

MIDDLE OF THE CENTURY,

POLKAMANIA HAD OVERTAKEN ALL OF

EUROPE.
