Discovering a Dream
John Waters discusses how, when he was a child, he attended a Howdy Doody show and, at that moment, knew he wanted a career in entertainment.
- Our family life, we were upper middle class.
My father started his own business.
I lived in a functional family.
- What did you wanna be when you grew up?
- The filthiest person alive.
No, I wanted to always be what I became.
I knew I was going to be in show business
after my parents took me.
My uncle, who lived in New York, got me
on the Howdy Doody Show when it was at the height of when
it was the biggest television show in all of America.
And I was in the peanut gallery.
- No kidding.
- And I remember seeing it all
and thinking, "It's all fake, it's a lie."
But I wasn't disillusioned.
I thought this is what I'm going to do.
I know what I'm going to do.
I want to be inside the magic trick.
