As we celebrate the life

and music of legendary blues artists, John Lee Hooker.

John Lee recorded music for over five decades

and performed with everyone

from Bonnie Raitt to Carlos Santana

to Van Morrison to the Rolling Stones.

If there was a blues Bible,

John Lee's gospel would be part of it.

On the final Saturday,

before he passed in June of 2001,

he performed to a sold out crowd

in Santa Rosa, California.

Tonight Detroit musicians perform his music

to honor his life

and his profound contribution to the blues.

Please welcome once again,

of which 95% were white men

and the black officers totaled less than 50.

Or as the NAACP put it in 1965,

"The Negroes in Detroit,

feel up their part of an occupied country.

The Negroes have no rights,

which the police have to respect.

It would appear that the average policeman

looks upon a negro as a criminal type."

But the police force

couldn't contain the rebellion.

And 8,000 Michigan army National Guardsmen

almost 100% white men from out state Michigan

were deployed with their tanks

on the streets of Detroit.

Followed by 4700 paratrooper

from both the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions

plus 360 Michigan State police dogs.

They placed the city under curfew

and started rounding up the suspects,

until more than 7200 citizens

had been taken off the streets

and stuffed into the jail.

Held in the (indistinct)

shipped to Jackson prison 80 miles away in Kansas.

Bill Murray.

(musical instrument playing)

Fire bombs were bursting all around me baby.

As the soldiers were standing everywhere.

The fire bombs were bursting all around me, baby.

And the National Guard was everywhere.

I could hear my people screaming.

Sirens filled the air,

filled the air,

filled the air.

Four days of carnage, arson and looting.

Sunday July 21st to Thursday, July 27, 1967.

43 people killed, 1189 injured

more than 2000 buildings destroyed

in the center of city.

But the damage was carefully directed

at the objects of their oppression.

As in the inhabitants of the ghetto,

and as the police

and troops who tormented them.

And most of the people who were killed

were gunned down by the police.

Like the predente Algiers Motel

the most fully documented

of all the police atrocities

committed during the rioting.

Although there was no rioting at the Algiers Motel

except for the police terrorism

unleashed upon the victims.

This was a rebellion

an uprising against racial oppression,

segregated housing, greedy landlords and businessmen.

Who controlled the environment.

The denial of economic opportunity

the refusal to provide proper education

and the relentless persecution by the police.

No relief in sight.

Nothing to look forward to.

No way to get ahead.

Why not burn the (indistinct) down.
