- Coming up is our broadcast of the Concert of Colors,

an annual celebration of diversity

and music from around the world.

Which has become one of Detroit's

most enduring and beloved events.

This year we're happy to bring the festival

into your home for the first time.

Recorded live from the Detroit Film Theater,

inside the Detroit Institute Of Arts.

It's the 28th annual Concert of Colors,

Detroit's annual diversity festival.

A celebration of the eclectic styles

and rhythms of music and art from across the globe

that shape our lives,

the city and the world around us.

- Hi, planetary citizens.

My name is Ismael Ahmed,

the director of the Concert of Colors,

Detroit's diversity festival.

28 years ago, new Detroit, a racial justice coalition

created after the 1967 rebellion.

Called together key organizations

from our communities of color to work together,

to celebrate our cultures, music, and diversity.

And just as important, to work together

to show justice and equality in our region.

Today we continue in that tradition,

while presenting some of

the finest performances on the planet.

To begin, we would like to honor

the native American people of this region.

After all, the Concert of Colors is taking place

on their land in Detroit.

In a city built by African Americans and others of color,

immigrants and working people of all races, religions,

creeds, colors, and sexual persuasions.

To them we dedicate this year's Concert of Colors.

Due to the COVID pandemic,

this year's Concert of Colors will be virtual,

but we hope powerful.

We would like to thank WTVS,

Detroit public television and WDET, Detroit public radio

for making this possible.

We also would like to thank the Detroit Institute of Arts

for their major role in this effort.

As well as the Charles Wright museum

of African American history,

the Arab American National Museum,

and the science gallery of Detroit for their contributions.

As well as the staff and volunteers

who've given so much to make this free event possible.

For information and schedule

for this year's Concert of Colors,

please go to www.concertofcolors.com.

Also take a minute to hit the donation button to help out.

- If starting early is any indication

to the success of a musician,

then Xiao Dong Wei is no exception.

At the age of five,

Xiao Dong Wei began studying the Erhu,

the Chinese to string violin with her father.

At age 11, she was accepted into

the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

10 years later, she earned the degree

becoming a master of the Erhu.

After receiving numerous awards,

she gained official notoriety

by touring with the Chinese Motion Picture Orchestra

for four years.

Before deciding to move to the United States in 2005,

where she performed in venues from coast to coast.

Near the completion of her tours across North America,

she was eager to find an eclectic music scene

where she could establish communal roots.

She found Detroit to be the ideal place.

Since 2007, Xiao Dong

continues to influence the sound of modern music

with her band Madame XD.

Xiao Dong has been featured on national public radio

and as a guest soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra,

Her music continues to cross international borders

by being heard on radio stations

throughout the United States, Australia and Europe.

In 2012, the Kresge Arts Foundation of Detroit

awarded Xiao Dong the Kresge Artist Fellowship.

Xiao Dong is currently a lecturer

at the University of Michigan, residential college.

Performing with her today is Yuki Mac on piano and keyboard,

Ken Hartman on bass and Guzang,

Steve Caldwell on guitar, James Simmonson on base,

Doug Austin on drums and Jeffrey Tran on saxophone.
