CONDUCTED BY BRENT HAVENS, WITH VOCALS BY MARSHALL CHARLOFF AND

YOUR HOST FRED NAHHAT AND MICHELLE MERRILL.

AND NOW, LIVE FROM ORCHESTRA HALL, IT'S THE MUSIC OF PRINCE.

>> DEARLY BELOVED WE ARE GATHERED HERE TODAY.

[ VIDEO PLAYING ] [ "LET'S GO CRAZY" ].

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> DETROIT, WHAT'S HAPPENING?

AND WELCOME TO THE DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.

I'M FRED NAHHAT FROM DETROIT PUBLIC TV WITH MICHELLE MERRILL.

>> COMING LIVE FROM ORCHESTRA HALL IN MIDTOWN DETROIT AS WE

SAY GOOD-BYE TO 2016 AND COUNT DOWN TO 2017.

AND TONIGHT WE'RE DOING IT IN STYLE WITH THE MUSIC OF PRINCE.

>> LET'S GET BACK TO THE MUSIC. GIVE IT UP FOR THE DETROIT

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> PLEASE ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF.

I'M MARSHALL CHARLOFF. I'M FROM MINNEAPOLIS MINNESOTA.

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> AND YEAH, GUESS WHO ELSE IS

FROM MINNEAPOLIS? ANYBODY?

ANYBODY GOT A GUESS? ALL THE MUSIC THAT YOU'RE GOING

TO HEAR TONIGHT, IS FROM MINNEAPOLIS.

THE LAST FIVE OR SIX YEARS NOW I'VE HAD THE HONOR OF TOURING

AROUND THE COUNTRY PERFORMING THIS MUSIC FROM MY MENTOR AND AN

INDIVIDUAL THAT LEFT HIS MARK ON ME AND ALL OF YOU I KNOW AS

WELL, AND SHAPED ME UP TO A MAN AND A MUSICIAN.

FEATURES DOCTOR FINK FROM PRINCE IN REVOLUTION.

BUT BEING FROM MINNEAPOLIS, I'VE WORKED WITH SO MANY FROM THE

MINNEAPOLIS AND ALL THE DIFFERENT MUSICIANS THAT PRINCE

HAS TOUCHED AND WORKED WITH. AND IT'S MY DISTINCT HONOR TO BE

WITH YOU GUYS HERE ON NEW YEAR'S EVE.

AND THERE IS SO MUCH MUSIC WE'VE GOT TO GET TO.

ARE Y'ALL READY TO PARTY TONIGHT?

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> ALL RIGHT.

BECAUSE YOU CAN PASS ON A COUPLE SONGS.

AND I WANT PEOPLE STANDING UP AND I WANT THE AISLES FILLED.

PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE DOING CART WHEELS AND THINGS.

IT'S THE MUSIC. [ LITTLE RED CORE VET ]

[ "LITTLE RED CORVETTE" ]. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> OKAY. SO LET'S HAVE IT FOR MINNEAPOLIS

P. I WAS BEST FRIENDS WHEN I WAS 18-YEAR-OLDS.

AND I WAS IN A BAND WITH PRINCE'S COUSIN.

HIS NAME IS FRANC. THANK YOU, IF YOU'RE WATCHING

IT'S COOL. JUST BEAR WITH ME.

AND IN THIS BAND, WE WERE TRYING TO BE FUNKY, WE WERE TRYING TO

BE PRINCE. AND THE DRUMMER WAS NOT FUNKY.

THE DRUMMER IS NOT FRUNGER, THAT'S FUNKY FIRST OF ALL, THAT

MAN RIGHT THERE. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> THE DRUMMER HAS TO BE DRUNGY. SO I COMPLAINED TO THE BAND

MEMBER. FRANK CAN'T PLAY.

THAT'S PRINCE'S COUSIN AND HE'LL GET A RECORD DEAL.

THAT'S AIN'T PRINCE'S COUSIN HE WOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY AND HE

CAN'T PLAY. IT GOT BACK TO FRANK AND FRANK

TOOK ISSUE WITH THE FACT THAT HE WASN'T PRINCE'S COUSIN.

I KNOW I'M NOT THAT GREAT A DRUMMER BUT I AM PRINCE'S

COUNCIL INCHES. THAT'S COOL.

EVERYBODY SAYS THEY'RE RELATED TO PRINCE BECAUSE IT'S 1985 AND

WE'RE IN MINNEAPOLIS. THAT'S WHAT YOU SAY.

NO, I'M GOING TO PROVE IT. LONG STORY SHORT WE WENT TO

PRINCE'S REHEARSAL. AND I WENT UP TO PRINCE AND HE I

WAS INTRODUCED TO HIM. FIRST THING HE SAID TO ME WAS,

YOU LIE. HE SAID DO YOU LIE?

DO I LIE? WELL I TRY NOT TO BE LIE I TRIED

TO BE A GOOD PERSON. >> CAN I HAVE YOUR AUDIO GRAPHS.

NO, I DON'T GIVE AUDIO GRAPHS. BUT I'LL GIVE ONE TO YOU.

WHERE IS YOUR PEN? WELL I HAD TO RUN NEXT STORE,

THERE WAS AN INSTI PRINT, A WAREHOUSE I RAN IN THERE I SAID

-- OH, IS PRINCE OUTSIDE? YEAH.

SHE GAVE ME A PURPLE FELT TIP PEN AND AN ENVELOPE AND HE

SIGNED LOVE GOD. HE SAID ARE YOU COMING?

WHERE? WE WENT INTO THE REHEARSAL AND

IT WAS JUST ME AND FROOVNG AND THE REVOLUTION.

THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME I MET MATT.

MATT DOES NOT REMEMBER MEETING ME SADLY THAT LONG AGO.

BUT YOU DON'T GUYS DOERNT WANT TO HEAR THAT, YOU WANT TO HEAR

MUSIC RIGHT? I THINK YOU MIGHT LIKE THIS ONE.

WE MIGHT GET SOME STANDING UP FOR THIS ONE.

[ "I WANNA BE YOUR LOVER" ]. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> THAT WAS THE FIRST BIG HIT FOR PRINCE.

ALSO THE FIRST APPEARANCE PRINCE MADE ON A NETWORK TELEVISION

SHOW. AND HE APPEARED DOING THAT SONG

ON DICK CLARK. DO YOU REMEMBER THAT?

DO YOU REMEMBER HOW NERVOUS HE WAS.

KIND OF LIKE HOW I AM RIGHT NOW. I'M JUST KIDDING.

ALL RIGHT. I'M SAD THAT YOU SAT DOWN

BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO GET RIGHT BACK UP FOR THIS ONE.

[ "KISS" ] >>>

[ "DIAMONDS AND PEARLS" ]. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> ANN MARIE COST TOE LANO LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

[ APPLAUSE ] [ "RASPBERRY BERET" ]

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> WE HAVE LOTS MORE MUSIC

COMING, LOTS MORE MUSIC. WE HAVE A QUICK INTER MISSION

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. GO GET A BEVNG.

NEW YEAR'S EVE. WE'LL SEE YOU IN A MINUTE.

>> THE MUSIC F PRINCE BACKED BY A WORLD CLASS ORCHESTRA, WHAT A

SPECTACULAR EVENING WE'VE SEEN SO FAR.

HI FRED NAHHAT ALONGSIDE MICHELLE MERRILL LIVE IN DETROIT

AT ORCHESTRA HALL AS WE CELEBRATE NEW YEAR'S EVE WITH

THE DSO. WE'RE ABOUT 90 MINUTES AWAY FROM

2017 WITH A WHOLE LOT MORE IN STORE FOR YOU THIS EVENING.

IN JUST A FEW MINUTES, THE ORCHESTRA AND THE LEAD VOCALIST

MARSHALL CHARLOTTE WILL RETAKE THE STAGE.

AND IF YOU'RE A PRINCE'S 90S HITS, YOU'RE GOING TO WANT TO

STICK AROUND. >> BUT RIGHT NOW WE WANT TO

SPEND A LITTLE TIME LOOKING BACK AT ONE OF DPTV A'S BIGGEST

MOMENTS OF 2016. IN OCTOBER, WE BROUGHT TOGETHER

SOME OF DETROIT'S BIGGEST NAMES TO CELEBRATE ARTS AND CULTURE IN

THE MOTOR CITY. HERE'S A LOOK BACK AT THE

INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE FROM THE VOICE OF FINE ALLIST AND ANN

ARBOR NATIVE, DETROIT'S QUEEN OF BLUES, THORNETTA DAVIS.

[ VIDEO PLAYING ]. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> BY CONDUCTOR AND ARRANGER BRENT HAVENS.

>> YOU HAVE DONE A LOT OF ARRANGE MS FOR POP AND ROCK

SHOWS. HOW DO YOU TAKE THE ICONIC SOUND

AND CHANGE THAT TO A ROCK SIMILAR FONNY.

>> I TRY TO REALLY TAKE THE ORIGINAL MATERIAL AND HAVE IT

PLAYED PRETTY MUCH THE SAME WAY IT IS ON THE RECORDED, PEOPLE

REALLY KNOW IT. FANS ARE FANATIC ABOUT IT.

THEY KNOW THE MUSIC INSIDE AND OUT.

I TRY TO TAKE THAT AND WRAP THE ORCHESTRA AROUND IT RATHER THAN

DO MY OWN REINTERPRETATION OF THE MUSIC.

>> IT SOUNDS GREAT. THIS IS MY FIRST TIME BEING HERE

AT ONE OF YOUR SHOWS. AND I LOVE IT.

YOU CAN TELL THE CROWD IS GOING CRAZY ABOUT IT.

>> IT'S A FUN SHOW. >> WHAEZ IT LIKE TO WORK WITH

THE DETROIT SYMPHONY. >> FANTASTIC ORCHESTRA.

MY WHOLE TEAM LOVES MERE. WE HAVE BEEN HERE 6, 7 TIMES.

IT'S WONDERFUL. WHEN YOU HAVE WORLD CLASS

MUSICIANS LIKE THIS AS YOU KNOW, IT'S SPECTACULAR.

>> WELL, YOU KNOW, TONIGHT IS NEW YEAR'S EVE.

THE MUSE PRINCE WE HAVE A DIFFERENT CROWD.

DO YOU THINK THERE IS A CROSS-OVER THAT OTHER PEOPLE

WOULD COME TO A CLASSICAL SHOW LATER ON OR A POP SHOW MAYBE.

>> WELL, THE INTENTION OF THE MUSIC IS REALLY TO BRING IN A

NEW CROWD, TO GET SOME EXPANSION OF WHAT -- YOU KNOW, COME AND

SEE THE DSO. I MEAN THIS ORCHESTRA CAN PLAY

ANY KIND OF MUSIC. NOT JUST CLASSICAL MUSIC, NOT

JUST POP MUSIC, NOW THEY CAN BRANCH INTO ROCK MUSIC AND A

LITTLE BIT OF FUNK. >> PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE WITH

YOUR ARRANGEMENT THAT THE ORCHESTRA CAN SOUND GREAT ON POP

MUSIC. >> EXACTLY.

YOU CAN TELL TONIGHT HOW WONDERFUL IT IS.

>> THAT'S A LOT OF YOU TOO. YOU DID A GREAT JOB.

>> WE ALL KNOW THE WHOLE WORLD WAS SADDENED BY PRINCE'S

PASSING. WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DO THIS SHOW

AFTER NEW YEAR'S EVE. >> WELL WE WERE REALLY HONORED

TO DO THE SHOW TONIGHT, ESPECIALLY TONIGHT, BECAUSE

WE'RE BRINGING IN A NEW YEAR. AND SO MANY CELEBRITIES PASSED

AWAY THIS YEAR. AND PRINCE BEING ONE OF THE BIG

ONES AS WELL. AND IT'S, YOU KNOW, IT'S AN

HONOR FOR US TO COME HERE AND CELEBRATE THE MUSIC AND THE WAY

THAT WE'RE GETTING TO DO IT. >> SURE.

WELL ANYTHING ON THE HORIZON? ANY NEW SHOWS YOU CAN LET US

KNOW ABOUT. >> WELL, WE'RE LOOKING AT SOME

OTHERS. BUT WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING IN

CONCRETE YECHT. I HAVEN'T STARTED WRITING.

>> VERY NICE. YOU KNOW YOU HAVE LOTS OF GREAT

THINGS GOING ON. SO HAPPY YOU CAN BE HERE.

THANKS AGAIN, BRENT. WE CAN'T WAIT UNTIL -- WE'RE

DONE WITH THE FIRST THIRD. WE HAVE TWO-THIRDS TO GO.

WHY DON'T WE TAKE IT BACK TO YOU, FRED.

>> SINCE 2011, THE DSO HAS BEEN PERFORMING FOR AUDIENCES AROUND

THE WORLD VIA ITS WEB SERIES. LIVE ORCHESTRA HALL.

MAKING IT THE MOST ACCESSIBLE ORCHESTRA ON THE PLANET.

EARLIER THIS YEAR THE ORCHESTRA PERFORMED LED BY MUSIC DIRECTOR

LEONARD SLATKIN. HERE'S A LOOK BACK NOW.

[ VIDEO PLAYING ]. >> I'M WITH JOE LAND AN WEST.

IS THIS THE FIRST TIME CELEBRATING WITH THE DSO.

I LOVE IT. I LOVE CLASSICAL MUSIC AND

PRINCE. >> I NOTICE THE NECKLACE YOU'RE

A GREAT PRINCE FAN. >> I GOT THIS AT McARTHUR.

IT WAS MY THIRD TIME. >> IT'S REALLY VIBRANT DOWNTOWN

WITH ACTIVITY. DO YOU HAVE ANY RESOLUTIONS FOR

THE NEW YEAR? A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY THEY WANT TO

GET WITH FRIENDS. I JUST WANT TO BE HAPPY.

>> SOMETHING WE ALL WANT. THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US.

WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK. [ VIDEO PLAYING ].

>> WE'RE A LITTLE MORE THAN AN HOUR AWAY FROM MIDNIGHT AND

THERE IS SO MUCH MORE MUSIC IN STORE FOR US.

>> THAT'S RIGHT, FRED. WE'VE GOT TWO MORE SETS BEFORE

THE COUNT DOWN AND MANY MORE GREAT PRINCE HITS.

YOU'RE GOING TO WANT TO STICK AROUND.

>> OKAY. WELL IT SOUNDS LIKE THE

ORCHESTRA IS BACK ON STAGE AND WARMING UP.

SO LET'S GO INSIDE ORCHESTRA HALL FOR MORE MUSIC WITH THE

DSO. [ APPLAUSE ]

[ "TAKE ME WITH YOU" ]. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> WE'RE RAMPING THIS PARTY UP Y'ALL.

SO LET ME TELL YOU A LITTLE STORY ABOUT THIS NEXT SONG.

THIS NEXT SONG I'M GOING TO GIVE YOU A HINT.

ACTUALLY I'M NOT GOING TO GIVE YOU A HINT.

I'LL TELL YOU IT'S CALLED "CREAM."

ISN'T MY GUITAR PRETTY? SO, AS I SAID, WITH THE PURPLE

EXPERIENCE OF PERFORMING THOSE SONGS FOR A LOT OF YEARS.

AND IT ALWAYS AMUSES ME WHEN WE GO TO AN EVENT AND THE PROMOTER

SAYS DON'T PLAY THE DIRTY PRINCE SONG AND IT'S COOL AND THERE ARE

SOME SONGS WE SHOULD NOT BE DOING.

BUT "CREAM" LADIES AND GENTLEMEN IS NOT ONE OF THOSE DIRTY SONGS.

IT'S NOT A DIRTY SONG. LET ME TELL YOU WHAT "CREAM" IS.

BEHAVE. WE'RE ON TV.

PRINCE WROTE THE SONG WHILE LOOKING INTO A MIRROR.

HE HAD FINISHED THE ALBUM FOR "DIAMONDS AND PEARLS."

AND THE RECORD COMPANY WANTED ONE MORE HIT.

BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE KA HONE AS TO SAY IT IT TO HIS FACE.

TELL PRINCE WE NEED ONE MORE HIT SONG.

AND THAT PERSON HAD TO REALLY HAVE THE HORRIBLE JOB OF GOING

TO TELL PRINCE THAT THE RECORD COMPANY SAYS WE NEED ONE MORSE

HIT. PRINCE KICKED EVERYBODY OUT OF

PAISLEY PARKED, LOOKED INTO THE MIRROR AND WROTE THIS STONG IN

ONE NIGHT. AND IT'S ABOUT BEING THE BEST.

SO SERIOUSLY THAT'S WHAT THE SONG IS ABOUT.

AND LEVI FOR TELLING ME THAT STORE.

LEVI IS PRINCE'S GUITAR STORY. LISTEN TO THE LYRICS FROM THAT

STORE. "CREAM" RISING TO THE TOP AND

BEING THE BEST. [ CHEERS ]

[ "CREAM" ]. [ APPLAUSE ]

[ "I FEEL FOR YOU" ]. >> Y'ALL KNOW THIS ONE.

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> WE NOW KNOW WHO THE PARTY

PEOPLE ARE TONIGHT. [ "POP LIFE" ].

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> SO, I WANT TO SET UP THIS

NEXT SONG. AS YOU KNOW, PRINCE WAS AMAZING

IN THE STUDIO. AND ON ALL LEVELS BUT HE

PRODUCED HIS OWN MUSIC. THERE IS ONLY ONE EXCEPTION TO

THAT AND THIS IS THE NEXT SONG, THE BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD,

AND HE BROUGHT IN RICKY PETERSON CAME IN TO HELP HIM OUT.

RICKY WAS ACTUALLY PRINCE'S FIRST PICK FOR KEYBOARD PLAYER

BUT HE WAS ALREADY ON TOUR AND THAT'S HOW MATT FINK GOT THE

JOB. SORRY, MATT.

BUT -- SO I CALLED RICKY AND SAID I'M DOING THIS COOL GIG

WITH THE SIMILAR FONNY. WHAT WAS IT LIKE

>> THE ONE COOL THING IS, TLGS THE PART TEARS OF JOY AFTER THAT

LYRIC, YOU HEAR THE SOUND EFFECT, BUBBLES, LIKE THAT.

ACTUALLY -- ACTUALLY GEORGE WAS DOING IT AT DINNER.

GEORGE GIVE ME THAT SONG EFFECT. YOU HAVE IT.

NOT BAD. VERY TALENTED MAN.

GEORGE. ANYWAY, WE'LL DO THE SONG FOR

YOU. WHEN YOU HEAR THAT PART, GEORGE

(NOISE) THERE WE GO. [ "THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL" ]

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> ANN MARIE COSTOLANO, ONE MORE

TIME. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> NATURALLY, ANN MARIE MIGHT JOIN ME, BECAUSE THE NEXT SONG

WE'LL DO IT TOGETHER, AND IT ALSO CONTINUES MY LOVE AFFAIR

WITH THE PETERSON FAMILY, WE'RE VERY MUCH INVOLVED WITH PRINCE,

IN ALL OF HIS DEVELOPMENT. PAUL PETERSON WAS IN THE TIME.

AND THEN HE ALSO WAS CHOSEN TO FRONT THE FAMILY, I DON'T KNOW

IF YOU GUYS KNOW THE FAMILY. THE FAMILY.

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> SO PAUL PETERSON IS THE FIRST

TO RECORD -- NOTHING COMPARES. IT WAS THE FIRST ONE IS PAUL

PETERSON. AND ANYWAY, SHEN AO'CONNOR MADE

IT INTO A HUGE HIT AS YOU KNOW. PRINCE DIDN'T LIKE THAT VERSION.

PAUL SAID, PRINCE NEVER LIKED THAT SONG BY SHEN A, THAT

VERSION. PAUL SAID TO PRINCE, I BET YOU

LIKED THE CHECK THAT YOU GET FROM SHEN AO'CONNOR.

>> NO MAN, IT AIN'T ABOUT THAT, IT NEVER WAS

[ NOTHING COMPARES 2 YOU ] [ NOTHING COMPARES

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> WE HAVE A SHORT INTERMISSION.

WE'LL BE BACK. GET YOURSELF A DRINK

. >> JUST ANOTHER INCREDIBLE

PERFORMANCE BY THE DE TROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TRA.

HI I'M FRED NAHHAT HERE ALONG MI SHEFL MERLE AS WE COUNT DOWN THE

FINAL HOURS OF 2016. >> WE ARE HERE LIVE AT THE

MAXIMUM M. AND MARCH ZWROR I S. FISHER CENTER FOR OUR 3RD ANIMAL

KNEW JERS EVE PERFORMANCE AND THE NIGHT'S NOT OVER YET.

>> FOR ONE, I AM TRILD TO BE BACK FOR THE THIRD TIME, RINGING

IN THE NEW YEAR WITH THE DSO AND DETROIT PUBLIC TV.

AND THE FIRST TWO YEARS WE CELEBRATED WITH THE MORE

TRADITIONAL MUSIC, INAUGURAL YEAR FEATURED TRUMP ET PLAYER

EXTRAORDINAIRE BYRON STRIMG. AND THEN LAST YEAR WE WERE

SERENADED BY THE SOULFUL VOICE OF MICHAEL LYNCHE WHO FOLKS KNOW

FROM SEASON NINE OF AMERICAN IDOL.

AND THIS YEAR, WE'RE CLEARLY SHAKING IT UP ONCE AGAIN WITH

THE MUSE PRINCE. >> SO MICHELLE, AT THE ASSISTANT

CONDUCTOR HERE WITH THE DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, WHAT DO YOU

THINK SO FAR OF THE MUSIC THIS YEAR.

>> WELL, THE DSO HAS HAD AN INCREDIBLE YEAR OF PERFORMANCES,

MICHELLE, DO YOU WANT TO INTERDUTIES THIS NEXT CLIP.

>> YES, OF COURSE. HEARS A LOOK BACK AT OUR

PERFORMANCE OF GERSHWIN. [ VIDEO PLAYING ].

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> ALL RIGHT JOINING ME FRESH

OFF THE STAGE IS TONIGHT'S LEAD VOCABULARY KALAMAZOOIST MARSHALL

CHARLOFF. YOU TRANSFORM YOURSELF.

WHAT'S THAT LIKE. >> WELL TONIGHT IT'S REALLY A

CELEBRATION OF MUSIC. I DO ATTRIBUTE.

AND YEAH, I GUESS YOU'RE RIGHT. I AM -- TRYING, BUT HIS

MANNERISMS, HIS RANGE, JUST BY INSTINCT.

BUT TONIGHT, THAT'S JUST COMING OUT OF ME.

I'M NOT TRYING TO PUT IT ON, IMPERFECT SONATION, MORE OF

ATTRIBUTE. >> THE PREPARATION, WHAT IS THE

PREPARATION LIKE FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS?

WITH A FULL ORCHESTRA. >> WELL, THE PREPARATION IS

BEING A FAN F PRINCE FOR'S OVER 30 YEARS AND HAVING MUSIC BE

JUST ORGANIC TO WHO I AM AT THIS POINT.

AND ALSO SIX YEARS OF TOURING WITH THE PURPLE EXPERIENCE AND

MATT FINK, THE REVOLUTION KEYBOARD PLAYER.

IT'S ABOUT AS AUTHENTIC AS YOU CAN GET.

I'VE BEEN IN TRAINING FOR A LONG TIME.

THIS YEAR NO ONE COULD HAVE PREDICTED THE OUTCOME.

THE CRAZY YEAR. >> FOLKS ARE LOVING IT ON STAGE.

AND IT REMINDS ME OF THE ORCHESTRA.

HOW IS IT THEN PERFORMING WITH THE DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA?

>> I WOULD SAY IT'S NOTHING SHORT OF A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE.

TO HAVE EVERYBODY COMING TOGETHER WITH THIS CATALOG, WITH

THIS MUSIC, WHICH I BELIEVE TRANSLATES VERY, VERY WELL TO

THE SYMPHONY AND BEING EXECUTED ON THE LEVEL HERE IT'S

EXTRAORDINARY. I'M REALLY GRATEFUL.

>> I KNOW FOLKS ON TWITTER ARE ASKING ABOUT THE VOCALIST WHO IS

PERFORMING THE DUET WITH YOU. TALK ABOUT HER.

>> SO THIS IS THE THIRD TIME PERFORMING WITH ANN MARIE CASS

CASTELLANO. AND SHE'S AN EXTRAORDINARY

MUSICIAN. SHE'S ALSO A MUSIC TEACHER.

SO IT GOES DEEP WITH HER. SHE'S NOT JUST A GOOD VOCALIST

BUT SHE'S A GREAT MUSE SIGNIFICANCE.

>> WHAT'S IN STORE FOR YOU IN 2017.

>> LOTS OF TOURING WITH THE PURPLE EXPERIENCE.

PURPLE EXPERIENCE.COM. ANOTHER ORIGINAL ALBUM COMING

OUT. I HAVE A COUPLE OUT THERE NOW

BUT I HAVE A NEW ONE COMING OUT THAT I'M RECORDING WITH MY

FRIEND JOHN FIELDS. AND WATCH FOR THAT.

AND JUST GOING FOR THE RIDE, JUST ENJOY IT AND TAKING EACH

DEI AS IT COMES AS A BLESSING >> MORE TO COME MARSHALL

CHARLOFF, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE, BEING IN DETROIT AND

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH US. FRESHT IT.

ANNUAL GALA, DETROIT PERFORMS LIVE EARLIER THIS FALL RG.

>> YOU CAN SEE HOW DETROIT PERFORMS EVERY TUESDAY AT 7:30

ON DETROIT PUBLIC TRN. WE'VE GOT JUST A LITTLE OVER 30

MINUTES BEFORE THE NEW YEAR. >> AND WE'VE SAID IT BEFORE BUT

WE'LL SAY IT AGAIN. THE NEXT SEGMENT IS PACKED WITH

>> IT WOULDN'T BE A CELEBRATION WITHOUT THAT ONE.

THE ORCHESTRA IS TUNING UP SO LET'S HEAD BACK INTO THE HALL

FOR MORE MUSIC OF PRINCE WITH THE DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.

[ APPLAUSE ] [ "WHEN DOVES CRY" ].

[ APPLAUSE ] >> LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, YOUR

DETROIT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> LET'S GIVE THEM A HAND. [ APPLAUSE ].

>> JUST STAY UP. [ "DELIRIOUS" ].

[ APPLAUSE ] [ "I WOULD DIE FOR YOU" ].

[ APPLAUSE ]. >> LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I WILL

INTRODUCE TO YOU MY FRIEND ON THE PIANO, MR. JUSTIN AVERY.

[ "BABY I'M A STAR" ]. [ CHEERS ].

>> WE LOVE YOU PRINCE. [ APPLAUSE ] LADIES AND

GENTLEMEN, ISN'T HE PRETTY? I MEAN WE CAN ALL AGREE, I HAVE

A NICE FALSETTO, BUT THAT'S JUST SO PRETTY, THAT'S SO GOOD.

BEST BROTHER. JUSTIN AVERY EVERYBODY.

SO THIS NEXT SONG, HOPE YOU GUYS AIN'T TIRED BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO

GET BACK ON YOUR FEET FOR THE NEXT SONG, PRINCE IN ALL THE

SONGS, IF YOU LISTEN TO THE LYRICS, THERE IS A LOT OF

PROCESSING. THERE IS A LOT OF DISCUSSION

ABOUT WHAT WE'RE HERE TO DO ON THIS EARTH AND THE LIMITED TIME

AND THE MORTALITY THAT IS GIFTED TO US.

AND THIS NEXT SONG EPITOMIZESES THAT.

IT'S 1999. IT'S ABOUT LIVING.
