>>> THIS TIME ON "BROAD &

HIGH" --

THEY CALL IT "THE MIGHT MORTON,"

ONE OF THE LAST SPECTACULAR

THEATER ORGANS BUILT FOR THE

SILENT MOVIE ERA.

COME WITH US TO THE OHIO THEATRE

WHERE "THE MIGHTY MORTON" STILL

GIVES YOU GOOSEBUMPS.

WHETHER YOU'RE THERE FOR A MOVIE

OR A SYMPHONY.

RIGHT NOW ON "BROAD & HIGH."

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

>>> WELCOME TO "BROAD & HIGH."

I'M YOUR HOST KATE QUICKEL.

100 YEARS AGO WHEN SILENT MOVIES

WERE ALL THE RAGE, THE MASSIVE

THEATER ORGANS THAT PROVIDED THE

ACCOMPANIMENT FOR THOSE FILMS

GOT STAR BILLING.

AND FEW OF THOSE ORGANS WERE AS

IMPRESSIVE AS "THE MIGHTY

MORTON" AT THE OHIO THEATRE.

IN THIS EPISODE, WE'LL LEARN

ABOUT THE ORGAN'S HISTORY, HOW

IT WORKS, HOW IT HELPED SAVE THE

THEATER, AND YOU WILL HEAR IT IN

ALL ITS GLORY.

>>> HELLO EVERYBODY AND WELCOME

TO THE BEAUTIFUL OHIO THEATRE IN

COLUMBUS, OHIO.

MY NAME IS JIM CANTRELL AND I

HAVE THE HONOR OF BEING THE

STAGE MANAGER AND HEAD CARPENTER

OF THIS BEAUTIFUL VENUE.

TODAY, WE'RE GONNA TAKE A TOUR

OF "THE MIGHTY MORTON" THEATER

ORGAN.

AT THIS TIME, I'M GONNA TAKE YOU

DOWNSTAIRS TO MEET THE AMAZING

CLARK WILSON, WHO'S GONNA TAKE

YOU ON A TOUR TO SEE THE BEHIND

THE SCENES OF HOW THIS AMAZING

INSTRUMENT FUNCTIONS AND

OPERATES.

COME WITH ME.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

ALL RIGHT EVERYBODY, LET'S SAY

HI TO CLARK.

>> HEY, HI.

WELCOME TO THE OHIO THEATRE.

IN THE BASEMENT, WHERE THE

ORGANIST LIVES.

THIS IS --

PARDON ME.

OF COURSE MASKED UP AS USUAL.

IN THESE COVID-TIMES.

I'VE EVEN GOT MY COVID HAIRCUT

OF NINE MONTHS NOW.

SO, WE DON'T USUALLY LOOK LIKE

THIS AT THE OHIO THEATRE.

BUT, WE THOUGHT TODAY RATHER

THAN THE TUXEDO AND JUST SHOWING

THE ORGAN AND MUSIC FROM OUT

FRONT WHERE THE AUDIENCES ALWAYS

GETS A CHANCE SEE, WE WOULD GO

BEHIND THE SCENES.

SO, EVERYBODY'S DRESSED DOWN FOR

THAT.

AND WE THOUGHT WE'D START DOWN

HERE.

SO, YOU CAN SEE THE DRESSING

ROOM AND THE HALLWAYS.

WE'RE GOING THROUGH THE

ORCHESTRA PIT TO SEE THE

ORCHESTRA LIFT.

WE'LL SEE THE BLOWER.

THE ACTUAL COMPRESSOR THAT RUNS

THE ORGAN AND SO ON.

AND, ALL SORTS OF THINGS.

UP IN THE ACTUAL ORGAN LOFTS

THEMSELVES.

WHILE WE'RE DOWN HERE IN THE

DRESSING ROOM, LET ME STAND UP

AND SHOW YOU A COUPLE OF THINGS

LIKE COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUES THAT

WERE MINTED YEARS AGO OF THE TWO

ORIGINAL ORGANISTS AT THE OHIO

THEATRE.

THIS ONE IS BILL DALTON, THE

ORGANIST FROM 1928-1933.

AND THEN IN 1933, ROGER GARRETT

PICKED UP AND PLAYED UNTIL 1942.

THEY WERE FULLTIME ORGANISTS.

ROGER WAS REMEMBERED WAY UP INTO

THE ë60s AND ë70s.

AND HE'S THE ONE THAT ACTUALLY

PLAYED THE FAREWELL CONCERT IN

1969 WHEN THEY SOLD OUT THE

THEATRE.

3,300 PEOPLE IN THIS PLACE.

AND THEY THOUGHT THAT WAS THE

END OF THE ROAD.

OF COURSE, THAT THE THEATRE

WOULD BE TORN DOWN.

AND OF COURSE, WE ALL KNOW THAT

THE REST IS HISTORY.

CAPA WAS FORMED, THE BUILDING

WAS SAVED, THE ORGAN WAS A BIG

PART OF THAT BUILDING, CALLING

ATTENTION TO THE NEED OF THE

OHIO AT THE TIME.

BUT, WE'RE ALL STILL HERE.

INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, 80 YEARS

AGO THIS YEAR, "THE DISPATCH"

AND DID A TWO-PAGE SPREAD ON THE

ORGAN CALLED "A TRIP TO THE

ORGAN LOFT."

SO, WE THOUGHT WE WOULD PARALLEL

THAT TODAY IN MODERN TERMS.

AND SO, IF YOU WANT TO FOLLOW

ME, WE'LL GO RIGHT AROUND THE

CORNER TO THE ORCHESTRA PIT

WHERE THE ORGAN LIVES.

HERE WE ARE IN THE ORCHESTRA PIT

AND THERE IS THE SECTION OF THE

ORCHESTRA PIT WHERE THE COUNSEL

LIVES.

IT'S OPEN RIGHT NOW FOR A LITTLE

BIT OF WORK BEING DOWN ON OUR

TECHNICIANS ON THE INSTRUMENT.

YOU'LL MEET THEM IN A LITTLE

WHILE.

ALL RIGHT, LET'S GO AND TAKE A

LOOK IN THE MACHINERY ROOM WHERE

THE BLOWER AND THE CONTROLS FOR

THOSE LIFTS LIVE.

YOU'RE GETTING A CHANCE TO SEE

SOMETHING ELSE VERY UNUSUAL.

TO GET TO THE BLOWER OF THE

ORGAN AND MACHINERY, WE GO RIGHT

THROUGH THE LIBRARY OF THE

COLUMBUS SYMPHONY.

SO, ALL OF THESE FOLDERS ARE

SOME OF THEIR THOUSANDS OF

ARRANGEMENTS THAT THEY PLAY YEAR

AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR IN

CONCERTS.

THIS IS THE ENTRANCE INTO THE

BLOWER ROOM.

AND WE DESCEND DOWN BELOW.

BUT, FIRST OF ALL I THOUGHT WE'D

TAKE A LOOK AT A COUPLE OF

ORIGINAL PARTS THAT WE HAVE TO

CONTINUE TO WORK THE ORIGINAL

MACHINERY.

THIS IS 1928 MACHINERY AND YOU

CAN'T JUST GO OFF TO THE

ELECTRIC STORE AND BUY A BRAND

NEW ONE.

SO, THIS IS A SPARE CONTACTOR

PANEL WITH ALL OF THESE HUGE

RELAYS AND CONTACTS THAT WOULD

RUN THE LIFT UP, OR THE LIFT

DOWN, OR THE LIFT TO PICTURE

POSITION.

THE KNIFE SWITCHES, AND THE

CARTRIDGE FUSES.

ALL OF THIS INCREDIBLE

MACHINERY, ALL RUNNING ON DC

POWER.

DIRECT CURRENT AS IT WAS IN

1928.

WE DON'T SEE MUCH OF THAT

ANYMORE, BUT WE ARE ABOUT TO GO

DOWNSTAIRS IN TO THE POWER ROOM

AND SEE ALL OF THAT IN

OPERATION.

DOWN IN THE BASEMENT OF THE

OHIO, THIS IS THE BLOWER AND

LIFT CONTROL ROOM.

AGAIN, EVERYTHING RUNNING OFF OF

HIGH VOLTAGE DC.

FIRST OF ALL, THE LITTLE PANEL

BEHIND ME, RUNS THE ORGAN LIFT.

THE MOTOR MOUNTED UPWARD BEHIND

IT IS THE ORGAN LIFT MOTOR.

OVER HERE, THE LARGE PANEL THAT

WE HAVE IS THE ORCHESTRA LIFT

CONTROL.

AND THE LARGE MOTOR BEHIND IT,

RUNS THE ORCHESTRA LIFT.

THIS IS A TEN HORSEPOWER MOTOR.

THIS ONE IS A 20 HORSEPOWER

MOTOR.

OVER THE IN THE CORNER, WE HAVE

THE ACTUAL STARTER FOR THE ORGAN

BLOWER THAT CREATES THE WIND FOR

THE ORGAN.

AND BEHIND ME, THEN IS THE ORGAN

BLOWER ITSELF.

SOMEWHAT LIKE A TURBINE OR A JET

ENGINE TYPE THING.

IT'S A 25 HORSEPOWER DC.

ONE OF THE LARGEST BLOWERS OUT

THERE.

OKAY, LET'S HAVE THE MOST FUN

AND START UP BIG MAMA NOW.

SO, WE'VE GOT MOTOR TO THE WATCH

AND WE'VE GOT THE CONTACTORS TO

WATCH BOTH.

[ ENGINE RUNNING ]

ALL RIGHT.

AND THAT'S IT.

A LOT OF FUN.

ALMOST 100 YEARS OLD AND STILL

JUST PURRING LIKE A TOP.

OKAY EVERYBODY, RIGHT NOW WE ARE

HERE AT THE CONTROL PANEL FOR

THE ORGAN LIFT AND THE PIT LIFT.

THERE IS A CLUSTER OF BUTTONS,

ONE LOW AND ONE HIGH.

THE BOTTOM IS FOR THE ORCHESTRA

PIT AND THE TOP ONE IS FOR THE

ORGAN LIFT.

THIS IS A SYSTEM THAT HAS BEEN

IN PLACE SINCE THE LATE 1920s.

BOTTOM WILL BRING THE PIT OR THE

ORGAN LIFT ALL THE WAY DOWN.

PICTURE WILL BRING IT UP TO A

MID LEVEL, FOR SHOWING FILMS.

AND TOP WILL BRING LIFT ALL THE

WAY BACK UP.

AND IT FUNCTIONS THE EXACT SAME

FOR THE PIT AND THE FOR THE

ORGAN LIFT.

DOWN HERE HAVE A LOCK OFF SO WE

CAN LOCK IT.

WHEN WE'RE DOING BROADWAY SHOW,

WE DON'T WANT PEOPLE OVER HERE

PLAYING WITH THIS BECAUSE IT

COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS.

WE MAKE SURE THAT WE LOCK IT OFF

SO THAT IT IS COMPLETELY SAFE.

OKAY EVERYBODY, WE'RE GONNA

STANDBY.

READY TO RUN THE LIFT.

WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY'S

OFF THE LIFT AND THAT IT'S SAFE.

MOVING LIFT NOW.

>> OKAY, STAND BY ON A LIFT.

AND MOVING.

>> THE ORCHESTRA PIT RUNS THE

FULL WIDTH OF THE STAGE.

AND IT CONSISTS OF THREE

ELEVATORS THAT ARE CAPABLE OF

RAISING AN ENTIRE SYMPHONY OF

40 PEOPLE UP AND DOWN.

AS WELL AS THE ORGAN AND A GRAND

PIANO.

THIS WHOLE BUSINESS IS THE

RECEIVING END OF ALL THE

MACHINERY THAT WE SAW EARLIER.

NOW, YOU GET A VIEW THAT NOT

VERY MANY PEOPLE BESIDES

PERFORMERS GET.

WE CAN SEE FROM THE ORCHESTRA

PIT AND THE ORGAN PIT ALL THE

WAY OUT INTO THE HOUSE.

YOU CAN FIT 40, 50, 60 MUSICIANS

DOWN HERE FOR BROADWAY SHOWS,

OPERA, WHATEVER MIGHT HAPPEN.

AND THE AREA'S DOWN HERE AT

STEPPED DOWN AS WELL SO PLAYERS

CAN BE STATIONED BACK

UNDERNEATH.

1928, NEW WITH THE HOUSE.

IT'S A ROBERT MORTON ORGAN.

BUILT BY THE MORTON ORGAN

COMPANY VAN NUYS, CALIFORNIA.

THEY WERE ONE OF THE TWO BIGGEST

THEATER ORGAN BUILDERS OF THE

TIME.

AND BY THE TIME, 1925, ë26 CAME

AROUND, NO THEATER WAS

CONSIDERED COMPLETE WITHOUT A

THEATER ORGAN.

IT WAS ONE MAN BAND.

A ONE PERSON ORCHESTRA.

IN THOSE DAYS, THESE MOVIE

PALACES OPERATED ALL DAY LONG.

FIVE SHOWS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A

WEEK.

AND THERE WAS MUSIC FROM OPENING

UNTIL CLOSING.

BUT, THAT WAS AN EXPENSIVE

PROPOSITION AS IT WOULD BE TODAY

TO HAVE AN ORCHESTRA OF

40 MUSICIANS IN THE PIT THAT

ENTIRE TIME.

AND SO, THE FOUND THAT WITH ONE

OF THESE INSTRUMENTS AND A

COUPLE OF GOOD ORGANISTS, IN

MANY THEATERS THEY COULD DO ALL

OF THE MUSICAL DUTY.

AND IN THE BIG DELUXE HOUSES

LIKE LOEW'S OHIO IN COLUMBUS,

THEY HAD THE ORCHESTRA AND THE

ORGAN TO AUGMENT.

AND THEY WOULD SWITCH BACK AND

FORTH.

WELL, THE ORGAN IS A PIPE ORGAN.

IT'S RUN ON WIND PRESSURE.

AND OF COURSE ALL THAT BUSINESS

WE SAW DOWNSTAIRS IS THE MEANS

TOWARDS THE END TO CREATE THE

MUSIC OUT OF THIS INSTRUMENT.

THIS IS ONE OF NINE OR TEN,

MAYBE 11; REALLY LARGE

ROBERT MORTON ORGANS BUILT.

AND IS THE ONLY ONE OF ITS TWIN

SISTER ORGANS TO REMAIN PLAYABLE

IN ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION.

ORIGINALLY THERE WERE ALMOST

10,000 THEATER ORGANS PRODUCED

BACK IN THE 1920s.

BY THE TIME SOUND CAME IN, THE

DEPRESSION HIT, AND ENDED IT

ALL.

THIS IS ONE OF LESS THAN

23 THAT'S STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL

LOCATION.

A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY SURE, WE

HAVE A PIPE ORGAN IN THE CHURCH

AND SO ON.

WELL, NOT LIKE THIS YOU DON'T.

AN ORCHESTRAL ORGAN OR A

SYMPHONIC ORGAN, A THEATER ORGAN

LIKE THESE ARE WERE VERY SPECIAL

INSTRUMENTS.

THEY WERE BUILT AT VERY LARGE

SCALES AND VERY HIGH WIND

PRESSURES.

SOMETIMES FIVE TIMES THE SIZE OF

A CHURCH INSTRUMENT.

FIVE TIMES THE PRESSURES ON THE

PIPES AND SO ON.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

THIS IS ONLY THE CONTROL CENTER.

THIS IS THE NOT THE ORGAN.

THE ORGAN WHICH YOU WILL SEE

VERY SHORTLY IS ACTUALLY IN TWO

CHAMBERS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE

PRESENIUM ARCH, UP NEAR THE

CEILING.

AND SPEAKING THROUGH THE SUN

BURSTS.

IT'S ALMOST 2,500 PIPES, RANGING

IN SIZE FROM ALMOST 20 FEET TALL

AND ABOUT THE SIZE OF A

55 GALLON TRASH BARREL RIGHT

DOWN TO ONE THAT IS A HALF INCH

TALL AND ABOUT THE DIAMETER OF A

TYPICAL PENCIL.

NO SPEAKERS, NO AMPLIFICATION,

NO NOTHING.

THIS IS AN ACOUSTICAL WINDBLOWN

INSTRUMENT.

AND THE TECHNOLOGY WHAT WE'RE

HEARING IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS

IT WAS ON OPENING NIGHT IN MARCH

OF 1928.

TO SHOW YOU AROUND THE COUNSEL,

SOME OF THE INDIVIDUAL VOICES.

WE ALWAYS HEAR THE FULL SOUNDS

OF THE ORGAN AT THE MOVIES

SERIES STARTING WITH THE BRASS.

AND WE HAVE TRUMPETS AND

FANFARE.

REEDS.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

WE HAVE TUBA THAT SOUNDS VERY

MUCH LIKE IT MIGHT BELONG IN

TCHAIKOVSKY.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

WE DO HAVE CHURCH ORGAN SOUNDS.

BOTH SOFT CHURCH ORGAN SOUNDS.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

OR, AT THE PRESS OF A BUTTON WE

HAVE THE CATHEDRAL ORGAN.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

SPECIAL STOPS ON THE THEATER

ORGAN WERE BIG FAT FLUTES CALLED

TEVIAS.

AND THEY COULD BE USED TWO WAYS.

SORT OF IN A BURLESQUE-Y TYPE

WAY TO IMITATE THE CIRCUS

CALLIOPE.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

OR, AGAIN AT THE PRESS OF A

BUTTON, THIS MIGHT BE WHAT YOU

HEARD WHEN THE LOVERS WERE

KISSING ON THE SILVER SCREEN.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

THEN WE HAVE THINGS LIKE AN

OBOE.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

OR ANOTHER ONE.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

OR A SPECIAL LITTLE THING CALLED

A KENURA THAT SOUNDS LIKE A

SWARM OF BEES BUZZING.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

THE MARIMBA.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

AND THE XYLOPHONE.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

AND THE GLOCKENSPIEL.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

AND THE BELLS.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

AND CRISOGLOT OR THE CELESTA.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

AND THE CHIMES.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

SO, YOU COULD MIX THESE

DIFFERENT SOUNDS INTO DOZENS,

HUNDREDS, THOUSANDS OF DIFFERENT

COMBINATIONS.

IMITATING EVERYTHING FROM A

STEAM LOCOMOTIVE STARTING UP, TO

BAGPIPES, TO COWS MOOING, PIG

OINKING, CATS MEOWING.

YOU NAME IT.

THE CLEVER THEATER ORGANIST

COULD CREATE A THUNDERSTORM.

THEY COULD HIT THE LIGHTNING AND

THEN THE THUNDER --

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

ON THE ORGAN.

AND THEN THEY COULD USE SOME OF

THE ACTUAL EFFECTS THAT CAME

ALONG.

WELL, THEY WERE INCLUDED SO YOU

COULD CREATE SOUNDS FOR SILENT

FILMS.

THAT'S WHY ALL THIS MUSIC IN THE

MOVIE PALACES IN THOSE DAYS

BECAUSE THE FILMS HADN'T LEARNED

HOW TO TALK YET.

THERE WAS NO SOUNDTRACK, SO IT

WAS LIVE MUSIC.

ALL RIGHT, SO YOU MIGHT BE

WONDERING GOSH, HOW MUCH DOES AN

ORGAN LIKE THIS TAKE IN

MAINTENANCE, AND TUNING, AND SO

ON AND SO FORTH?

AND THE ORGAN IS REALLY IN

SUPERB CONDITION.

BUT, BECAUSE IT IS THE SIZE IT

IS, AND OF COURSE BECAUSE IT'S

THE AGE IT IS.

I HOPE I'M IN ANY KIND OF SHAPE

WHEN I'M THIS AGE.

IT DOES REQUIRE MAINTENANCE.

AND WE HAVE ONE OF THE BEST

PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRY WHO IS

REALLY CONVERSANT WITH THEATER

ORGANS.

NOT CHURCH ORGANS, BUT THEATER

ORGANS.

AND THEY'RE SUCH A DIFFERENT

BREED OF CAT.

AND WE'RE REALLY LUCKY TO HAVE

HIM HERE WITH US TODAY.

AND HE'S GOING TO TAKE YOU ON A

LITTLE BIT OF A TOUR BEHIND THE

SCENES IN THE ORGAN CHAMBERS TO

SEE WHAT CREATES ALL OF THIS

WONDERFUL SOUND THAT WE LUCKY

ORGANISTS GET TO TICKLE THE

IVORIES AND HEAR ABOUT.

AND THAT IS MR. GLEN TALLAR.

>> EVERYTHING BEHIND HERE IS THE

ORGAN CHAMBER, SO LET'S OPEN THE

DOOR AND GO ON IN.

OF COURSE, THERE'S A LADDER TO

GO UP TOO.

AND THEY DIDN'T MAKE THESE

PLACES EASY TO GET INTO.

THERE WERE MOSTLY WORRIED ABOUT

SELLING SEATS.

[ LAUGHTER ]

JIM, CAN YOU GUYS TURN THE ORGAN

ON?

>> DARN IT.

>> ALL OF THE SOUND THAT YOU'RE

HEARING DOWNSTAIRS IN THE

THEATER, FROM WHAT YOU HEAR

CLARK PLAYING ON THE ORGAN

COUNSEL, UP IN THESE CHAMBERS ON

EITHER SIDE OF THE THEATER, THIS

IS WHERE YOU HEAR ALL OF THE

SOUND COMING OUT.

YOU'VE SEEN THE DOWNSTAIRS

BUSINESS WITH THE BLOWER.

WELL, AFTER IT GOES THROUGH THE

THEATER WALLS AND INTO THE

CHAMBERS.

IT COMES IN THIS BIG WIND LINE

HERE.

AND THEN YOU SEE ALL THESE METAL

WIND LINES ALL OVER THE CHAMBER.

THAT'S AIR GOING TO EACH ONE OF

THE CHESTS THAT THE PIPES SIT ON

TOP OF.

BEFORE IT GOES TO THOSE CHESTS,

IT GOES INTO THESE THINGS CALLED

RESERVOIRS.

SO, WHAT IT'S ESSENTIALLY DOING

IS THE WIND THAT'S COMING OUT OF

THE BLOWER IS A STATIC PRESSURE.

IF YOU PUT THAT STATIC PRESSURE

TO SOME OF THESE PIPES, THE

PIPES WILL ACTUALLY FLY OUT OF

THE CHEST.

SO, THEY NEED TO BE REGULATED.

SO, THERE'S RESERVOIRS WITH

SPRINGS ON THEM THAT BRING IT

DOWN TO THE CORRECT PRESSURE FOR

WHAT THE PIPES CAN HANDLE.

ALSO, THIS IS WHAT GIVES YOU THE

VIBRATO EFFECT WHEN YOU TURN ON

THESE WOODEN BOXES THAT HAVE

JUST A LITTLE MOTOR THAT GOES

LIKE.

AND IT'S A PNEUMATIC MOTOR

THAT'S MOSTLY MADE OUT OF EITHER

RUBBER CLOTH OR LEATHER THAT

CAUSES THAT VIBRATO EFFECT.

TURN THE TREMULOUS ON PLEASE.

YOU CAN SEE ALL THE RESERVOIRS

START BOUNCING UP AND DOWN.

OKAY, WE'RE GOOD.

AND THERE YOU GO.

SO, THE OVERALL ORGAN HAS

32 RANKS.

THERE'S SOME ON THIS SIDE AND

THEN THERE'S SOME OF THE OTHER

SIDE.

THE SIDE THAT WE'RE STANDING IN

RIGHT NOW IS A SOLO.

SO, IT HAS ALL OF THE SOLO

RANKS.

SO, A RANK IS MADE UP OF EITHER

61 NOTES OR A LITTLE MORE

DEPENDING ON HOW MANY PITCHES IT

HAS.

SO, IF IT HAS A 16 FOOT PITCH

LIKE GOING DOWN TO LOW C THERE.

IT'S OBVIOUSLY GONNA HAVE MORE

THAN 61 PIPES.

IT'S GONNA HAVE ANOTHER TWELFTH

NOTE EXTENDED TO IT.

SO, EACH ONES OF THESE ARE MADE

UP.

SO, THERE'S 61 NOTES.

PART OF THIS RANK IS THE ENGLISH

HORN.

SO, THE ENGLISH HORN, THE

ENGLISH POST HORN WOULD MAKE UP

A RANK THAT'S A SOUND.

SO, IN ESSENCE THERE'S AS FAR AS

MANY OF RANKS ARE IN THE ORGAN,

THAT'S HOW MANY DIFFERENT SOUNDS

THERE ARE ON THE ORGAN.

[ BELL CHIMING ]

AT FIRST, WE WANT TO SHOW YOU

THE TOY COUNTER OF THE ORGAN.

AND THAT'S THE STUFF HERE.

HEY CLARK, CAN YOU DO THE

MILITARY MARCH BAND THING WITH

THE DRUMS?

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

OKAY, NOW SHOW HER THE HORSE'S

HOOVES.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

WE KIND OF JOKE AND SAY THAT'S A

THREE LEGGED HORSE BECAUSE

THERE'S OBVIOUSLY THREE OF THEM.

SHOW THE FIRE BELL.

[ BELL RINGING ]

NOW TAMBOURINE NEXT.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

THE WIND CHIMES.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

GO AHEAD AND PLAY ON THE

MARIMBA.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

FOR VOLUME CONTROL, ALL THIS

STUFF PLAYS AT ONE VOLUME.

YOU CAN'T SIT HERE AND TURN THE

VOLUME DOWN LOWER WITH LOWER

WIND PRESSURE.

OR YOU CAN'T USE HIGHER WIND

PRESSURE FOR IT TO WORK.

SO, WE HAVE THESE THINGS CALLED

SWELL SHADES THAT THE ORGANIST

CONTROLS WITH THEIR RIGHT FOOT.

AND YOU CAN SEE THEM MOMENT OPEN

AND CLOSING, THAT CONTROL THE

SOUND.

THE MORE THAT THEY'RE CLOSED,

THE LESS VOLUME GETS OUT.

THE MORE THEY'RE OPEN, GETS THE

VOLUME OUT.

WE'LL SHOW YOU WHAT THE HIGHEST

NOTE SOUNDS LIKE ON THE ORGAN.

HEY CLARK, PLAY HIGH C ON THE

VOX.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

SO, THAT WAS THE HIGHEST NOTE ON

THE ORGAN.

OKAY CLARK, GO AHEAD AND PLAY

THE 16 FOOT LOW C OF THE TUBA.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

ALL RIGHT CLARK, GO AHEAD AND

HIT THE CHINESE GONG.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

SO, AS YOU CAN SEE, ALL THIS

OPERATED BY PNEUMATICS.

SO, THE LITTLE ELECTRIC COIL

UNDERNEATH THE BOX THAT RELEASED

THE AMOUNT OF AIR PRESSURE

INSIDE THE BOX CAUSING THE

LITTLE VALVE TO CLOSE.

HIT IT ONE MORE TIME.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

SO, THAT WAS THE FIRST VALVE AND

AS THAT VALVE CLOSES, IT PUSHES

THIS MOTOR TO OPEN UP WITH AIR

INSIDE IT.

SO, IT WAS A LITTLE VALVE

UNDERNEATH AND THIS VALVE, AND

THEN IT HITS THIS.

SO, PRETTY MUCH TECHNICALLY YOU

COULD JUST SIT HERE AND DO THAT.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

EVERY SINGLE PIPE, EVERY SINGLE

SOUND EFFECT, ANYTHING THAT YOU

HEAR HAS SOME TYPE OF VALVE ON

IT TO MAKE THE ORGAN WORK.

ALL THE PIPES ON THE ORGAN ARE

EITHER MADE OUT OF METAL OR

WOOD.

IT GIVES YOU JUST A DIFFERENT

STYLE OF SOUND.

AS FAR AS METAL PIPES, WE HAVE

LIKE THAT CHURCH ORGAN SOUND

WHICH IS RIGHT BACK HERE.

THE DIAPASON.

PLAY ON THE DIAPASON.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

STRINGS.

THESE ARE THE STRING SOUNDS

RIGHT HERE.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

THOSE ARE YOUR FLUES.

AND THEN WE HAVE REED PIPES.

WHAT HAS THESE LITTLE, ALMOST

LIKE KAZOO REEDS INSIDE THEM

THAT GIVES YOU YOUR REED SOUNDS

OF YOUR TRUMPETS.

FRENCH TRUMPET PLEASE.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

AND THEN THERE'S A FANFARE

TRUMPET THAT IS OVERALL THE

LOUDEST THING ON THE ORGAN.

JUST TO CUT THROUGH.

ENGLISH POST HORN.

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

!!musiC@!!!musiC@!

>>> WANNA HEAR "THE MIGHTY

MORTON" IN PERSON?
