I just have always had a love for roots music.

Just ingrained into me since I was really young.

So for me it's kind of, you know,

like playing something that I just know.

You know, it's kind of just the music

I've always had felt like I just had inside me

and wanted to make and express.

My name is Colin, I play the violin, the mandolin,

and a little bit of guitar

and I co-sing in The Way Down Wanderers.

- My name is Austin, I play guitar

and a little bit of keys

as well as co-sing in The Way Down Wanderers.

- I grew up playing music as a kid.

I was in violin lessons,

but my grandpa played in a folk band.

They were always singing.

I guess I always was singing as a kid.

So I got to watch his band play a bunch

and they really inspired me

to, kind of, play more roots music and bluegrass

and that sort of thing.

- Growing up I kind of started playing the drum set out

of, like, middle school

and later in high school just started playing keyboard

and writing songs and then joined a few bands

and then started playing guitar.

My earliest memories of performing

are probably lots of open mic nights,

then just my high school performing with my band

for a few variety shows and different things.

♪ I know that time's just a fleeting thing ♪

I can't remember a specific first time on stage

'cause I definitely had violin recitals growing up

and stuff like that as a little kid.

I did a lot of theater as a kid.

Maybe like eight years old,

I was in a couple local theater productions.

- We formed in late 2013.

Colin and I, we met in Peoria, Illinois,

at a show that was held at an art gallery

where all of the bands were playing covers

of other band's music

and Colin just complimented my drumming,

and I was actually already a fan of his band that he was in.

(laughs)

But yeah, he came up to me, just said hey,

and a few months later I ended up joining his band

and yeah, we kind of grew with that group.

We went on our first tour together.

I think Colin was like 14.

- Yeah, the band was pretty active

throughout my high school years.

So around like 17 right after high school,

we pretty much just hit the road full time.

♪ But you left me

I would describe our music as folk-rock, Americana,

with a little Bluegrass influence.

♪ I packed my dusty old guitar

- I definitely would say we've grown

into the band name a little bit.

It was almost like we put the name down

and we kinda set out for what it meant.

At the time we had a whole list of band names

that we were really digging,

but actually The Way Down Wanderers

was one of my favorites.

And I always loved it just because it felt

like it implemented adventure and exploration and travel,

which we're all about and we've started doing a lot more.

♪ With you it's been the hardest ♪

♪ It's like a harvest without a doubt ♪

So the writing style and the inspiration, it varies.

A lot of the time it just comes from experiences or stories

and sometimes we try to dive in to the perspective

behind someone else's story

or something that other people have gone through.

Abstract things can be metaphorical

for certain experiences and things like that.

The song "All My Words" is one of the first singles

off of our new album, Illusions.

And yeah, this song is just kind of an upbeat,

I don't even know how to describe it.

It's kind of poppy, it's got a little reggae vibe,

but there's also banjo and fiddle.

But it kind of all started with a really old,

just like progression that I had written

on keyboard years ago, but then years later,

I kinda revised it.

We kind of just stripped it down

to basically acoustic guitar in a room with the band.

And we kind of pieced together a few more parts.

So I kind of set out to write this song

almost as towards someone who might be wanting

to just keep you around or string you along in a way.

So it's kind of just about separating yourself

from a certain person and not being to move on

before settling things.

- I started writing this song "Headed North."

It's basically just a few years after the band started,

Sawyer just moved and sent off to college up in Wisconsin,

which was about just five hours north

of where I was staying,

but that was pretty much right

when we started seeing each other,

so it was kind of a hard time to separate.

So just be traveling up to Wisconsin all the time

to see Sawyer.

Colin and I would be going up all the time.

Taking road trips and hiking up there

and spending some great time together.

So yeah, that's kind of just where it came from.

And just kind of feeling

like you have a partner long distance away.

♪ Well I took right off
