♪ Hey

- I grew up on Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette

and Dolly Parton, and it wasn't until the mid '90s that

I worked with a guy who heard that I did some singing,

and he said, you should come to my house on Sunday night.

On every Sunday night, we have a blues jam in my garage.

(lively sax music)

Wow, cool, okay, so I showed up,

and the blues was just pouring out of this little garage,

ya know, nine guys drinking beer, you know,

smoking and playing the blues.

Somebody handed me some lyrics,

and I just started singing, and I was hooked.

And I started listening to Etta James,

and I didn't put Etta James down.

I still haven't.

I just kinda got addicted to it,

and it felt comfortable when I'm singing it,

and when I'm up on stage, it makes sense

and it makes you dance.

Nobody is ever going to sound like Etta James,

ya know, so somebody said put it down,

learn the song, walk away from this CD,

and just sing it and kind of make it your own,

and it takes some time to do that.
