- I grew up in Southern Mexico in the state of Oaxaca.

I moved here when I was a young boy.

I went to high school and college,

and even medical school here in Detroit.

I wanted to do something that pulled out all these ideas,

and then brought them together.

I wanted to pick the very best musicians that I could.

These musicians are people that I've known,

and are, I think, superlative in their own right.

They're excellent musicians.

The name you asked me about is something I made up.

I didn't know what to call it.

Then I thought, "Well, what do I like?"

And I started making a list of things that I like,

and I put down water because I like

the sound of running water.

So, in Spanish that's "agua".

And then I liked the guaguancó,

which is a rhythm from Cuba.

So, I said, "How about if I call it Aguankó,

so I mixed the name.

I went to Google, typed it in, it didn't exist.

There were no queries, nothing, so I said,

"Okay, that's my name, I made it up, so it's mine."

So, the band sounds great when we play.

When we do the rehearsals I go to bed smiling and dancing,

and wife says, "What are you so happy about?"

I go, "Honey, you don't understand.

"Everything feels like the world is right."

For me, the most wonderful thing is to go from an event,

something that happens in my life

that's important, or valuable, or wonderful,

put it into music and then have people experience it.

That's why I do this.
