Thanks, Austin.

I think as I've gotten older, you know,

we've put out a lot of different types of songs,

and, you know, you see the way in which

not everybody got Vampire when we first came out.

You know, some of the songs are very, like, peppy,

major key, whatever.

And then you see, you know, "Okay, well,

what if I write a song that's grappling with

my relationship with God

or, like, the impending death of everyone I know?"

And you see the way in which people would be like,

"Okay, now, that's serious songwriting."

And I always have this feeling

of, like, chafing at that a little bit,

'cause the artists that I really love have a sense of humor

and can lean into corniness as much as they lean

into seriousness.

So, yeah, on this album, especially on an 18-song album,

I think you need the serious next to the stupid.

And when I really think about the people that I love --

There's a lot of artists that I admire

and that I respect from a distance,

lot of critically acclaimed artists

that I would always, you know, give them their props,

but you'd probably never catch me listening to

'cause it's just not me.

There's a lot of stuff that dwells exclusively

in a type of a certain -- yeah, a certain mode of seriousness.

And the writers that I really like

and that I feel connected to,

they almost seem cooler to me when they lean into stupidity

or corniness every now and then, you know?

Anytime I get, you know, annoyed

about some small element of being on the road

or just, you know, the hassles of being an artist,

then I pause for a second, and I realize, like,

we were gone for six years, and we're playing

our biggest shows, our biggest tours ever.

And we have fans who first heard us when they were kids,

and now they're in college or older.

We have parents bringing their children,

and the kids would be like, "Oh, yeah, I've heard you

since I was, you know, like, little,"

and they're still only like 8 or 9.

And then I kind of realize that

that's what it's all about, you know?

And I also have to pause and think how,

you know, of course I always believed in Vampire Weekend.

And, you know, when I was in a good mood,

I would have believed that we would still be doing our thing

all these years later, but the truth is,

I can look at it through another lens and say,

we're a band called Vampire Weekend.

It's a stupid name.

When we first came out, we were kind of, like, considered

borderline a novelty act by a lot of people.

So the idea that we'd be here on our fourth album,

and we could be playing 2-1/2-hour shows

to this group of people, like, truly --

Yeah, gratifying is almost, like, an understatement.

We're so lucky to be in that position.
