-It was back in 2008, so people can flash back

to, you know, what was going on during that time.

We were in the middle of the Obama campaign.

We were all involved in some way.

We were all contributing our time and energy

to get people out to vote.

And it was, you know, it was a very inspiring time.

It was a very -- a time of heightened awareness.

I wanted to do something musically

that was closer to the political moment that we were in

and the social moment that we were in,

and so the idea was to do a cover project

that kind of captured the feelings

that were going on at that time.

So we started to, you know, imagine, like,

what the album would sound like, and the more we got into it,

we figured, let's focus on this musical era --

late '60s, early '70s,

political, revolutionary civil rights music

from that era, and...

let's make a whole album of that.

-I mean, soul music was so inspiring...

during the civil rights period,

and -- and the post-civil rights period.

Um...

And inspiring during even the golden age of hip-hop,

which basically echoed the same sentiments

of the civil rights.

And I guess just, you know, the post-Clinton...

ironic glamour era, uh...

of, like, '92, it just --

just a bunch of, I guess, diminished returns.

-I think, first of all, there's a lack of depth

in popular music right now in general.

I think everything's kind of surface,

everything's kind of instant.

It has, you know, a quick flavor,

but it doesn't have much -- many layers to it.

It doesn't have much -- much depth to it.

There isn't a sense of urgency.

I think people don't feel the pain

of the struggle as much, I think,

as people felt it back in the '60s and '70s.

-But you also have to look at the times that we're in.

I think a lot of the music has no depth to it

because people just want to escape

and not be reminded of how bad it is.
