Artbound Presents: Studio A

FULL EPISODE

Milck

Cathartic pop artist MILCK performs an intimate set which includes her viral song “Quiet,” which provided a post-election call for people of all races, creeds, and colors who have suffered and survived gallantly in the face of trauma, trials, and tribulations with resounding piano chords and shuddering, soulful delivery.

TIME AND TIME AGAIN, THE LESSON

THAT I LEARNED AS AN ARTIST WAS

HOW TO SPEAK UP FOR MYSELF AND

HOW TO NOT TRY TO PLEASE OTHER

PEOPLE AND JUST TAKE UP SPACE

WITHOUT APOLOGIZING.

I HAD TO LEARN HOW TO TRUST MY

VOICE AND MOVE FORWARD FROM

LEARNED THAT I AM THE TEAM, I

PEOPLE, IT'S ALL WITHIN ME,

THAT'S WHEN EVERYTHING STARTED

[PLAYING "QUIET"]

UM, SO THIS NEXT SONG HAS

CHANGED MY LIFE, AND I DIDN'T

THINK IT WOULD.

I JUST NEEDED TO WRITE IT

BECAUSE I HAD--

LIKE, IT FELT LIKE A LUMP IN MY

THROAT, AND FOR A FEW YEARS, I

WAS TRYING TO WRITE THIS SONG TO

BE THIS VERY LOVING MIDDLE

FINGER TO ALL THOSE MOMENTS IN

MY LIFE WHERE I FELT OPPRESSED

OR SILENCED OR NOT HEARD, AND

FOR A LOT OF MY LIFE, I THOUGHT

THAT SPEAKING UP WOULD BE A BAD

THING, AND IT SCARED ME TO NO

END, SO I THOUGHT THE ONLY WAY

THAT I COULD MAKE PEOPLE LISTEN

WAS WHEN I SANG, SO I SANG ALL

THE TIME, AS MUCH AS I COULD,

AND AS I'VE GOTTEN TO BECOME A

WOMAN, I REALIZED THAT IF I

DIDN'T START TRAINING MY

REAL-LIFE, DAY-TO-DAY VOICE AS

THANK YOU.

THE LYRICS OF "QUIET" CAME FROM

MY OWN LIFE AND--AND ALSO

SEEING MY OTHER FRIENDS' LIVES,

AS WELL.

YOU KNOW, THERE'S A LOT OF GREAT

THINGS ABOUT A TRADITIONAL

CULTURE WHERE, YOU KNOW, WE

RESPECT FAMILY AND WE--WE PUT A

LOT OF LOVE INTO THE FAMILY

STRUCTURE, BUT THERE'S ALSO SOME

DIFFICULTIES WITH WOMEN TRYING

TO FIND THEIR VOICE AND THEIR

PLACE NOT JUST WITH MY CULTURE,

BUT I THINK AROUND THE WORLD,

AND THAT'S WHAT I LEARNED.

AS "QUIET" BECAME OTHER WOMEN'S

SONG, IT WAS NO LONGER ABOUT ME.

IT'S ABOUT WOMEN AND--AND ALL

GENDERS IN BETWEEN.

WHOEVER HAS EVER FELT UNSAFE OR

A MINORITY IN THEIR OWN HOME OR

FELT LIKE THEY WEREN'T BEING

HEARD, I THINK THIS SONG IS VERY

IMPORTANT FOR THEM BECAUSE IT

HELPS THEM CHANNEL THAT POWER,

AND THAT'S ALL I CAN REALLY

HOPE FOR.

I HAD WRITTEN "QUIET" AT THE END

OF 2015, AND THEN I HAD SIGNED

WITH MANAGERS, AND THEY HEARD

THAT SONG, AND THEY THOUGHT,

"OH, THIS MIGHT BE A RADIO

SONG," AND THEN THEY STARTED

ASKING ME TO CHANGE MY IMAGE,

AND THEN THEY WANTED ME TO

CHANGE MY NAME AND CHANGING A

LOT OF THINGS, AND I--I ACTUALLY

TOLD THEM, I WAS LIKE, "I THINK

THAT MAYBE--MAYBE THE VISION

THAT I HAVE ISN'T WHAT YOU

BELIEVE IN, AND SO MAYBE WE

SHOULD TAKE SOME SPACE," SO I

WAS REALLY HEARTBROKEN.

THEN I JUST WENT ON THIS JOURNEY

TO REALLY SING "QUIET" THE WAY I

SAW FIT, AND, YEAH, "QUIET" HAS

BECOME AN ANTHEM, AND THAT WAS

KIND OF SECRETLY MY DREAM.

I DIDN'T EVER VERBALIZE IT.

I WAS LIKE, "HOW COOL WOULD IT

BE TO HAVE THIS BE THE ANTHEM

FOR THE PEOPLE?" BEING IN DC

DURING THE WOMEN'S MARCH WAS

ABSOLUTELY ELECTRIC.

THE AIR WAS FILLED WITH THIS

HIGH, VIBRATING ENERGY.

I HAD NOT MET THE 25 WOMEN I HAD

SUNG WITH, NOT AS A COMPLETE

WHOLE, UNTIL THE DAY, THE

MORNING OF THE MARCH, AND I HAD

PLANNED WITH THEM. I HAD SENT

THEM MUSIC AND REHEARSED WITH A

LOT OF THEM ONLINE, AND I WAS

JUST HOPING FOR THE BEST BECAUSE

I'M KIND OF CRAZY.

I HAD JUST SPENT A LOT OF MONEY

TO FLY TO DC TO SING WITH 25

WOMEN I'VE NEVER SUNG WITH.

IT COULD SOUND TERRIBLE, UM,

BUT ON THURSDAY WHEN WE DID

REHEARSE, IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL,

AND WE ALL SAT IN A CIRCLE AFTER

WE SANG, AND EVERYONE--

I ASKED EVERYONE TO TELL ME

SOMETHING THAT THEY DESIRE AND

WHAT THEIR INTENTIONS ARE FOR

WHY THEY'RE SINGING WITH ME, AND

IT WAS COOL BECAUSE HALF OF THE

WOMEN WERE MOTHERS AND WORKING

WOMEN, AND THEN THE OTHER HALF

WERE JUST, LIKE, 18 TO 22, JUST

IN COLLEGE, SO THEIR DESIRES

WERE THE SAME YET VERY

DIFFERENT, YOU KNOW, AND WE ALL

STARTED TEARING UP WHEN ONE OF

THE MOTHERS WAS LIKE, "I--MY

DESIRE IS THAT WHEN WE GO AND DO

THIS MARCH, MY DAUGHTER WON'T

HAVE TO DO THIS MARCH."
