a Many-Splendored Thing ]

♪ It's the April rose that only

grows in the early spring ♪

Love is the most written-about

topic in the American Songbook.

Now, technically speaking, it's

not the easiest thing to write

lyrics about because less than a

dozen words in the English

language rhyme with "love."

But that hasn't stopped

lyricists from writing tens of

thousands of songs about that

oft-expressed emotion.

So, on this episode of

"American Songbook at NJPAC,"

we're going to revisit some of

the world's greatest love songs

that have been performed on this

stage by some incredible

artists.

We're also going to take you

through the roller coaster of

emotions we've all experienced

from falling in and out of love.

from that moment when you see

a stranger

subtly change.

Doubt can certainly make you

crazy, and it creeps into all

relationships at one point

or another

and into popular songs as well,

particularly into

the American Songbook.

It's so universal that the

Righteous Brothers'

"You've Lost That Lovin'

Feelin'" was the most played

song of the 20th century.

Of course, the most sung song

was still "Happy Birthday," but

the Righteous Brothers, "You've

Lost That Lovin' Feelin'."

There are lots of books, and

there are blogs about the best

way to break up a relationship.

It's become a cottage industry.

But personally I've always felt

that the American Songbook had a

lot more meaningful suggestions.
