Fannie Lou Hamer's America | Promo

Fannie Lou Hamer's America is a portrait of a civil rights activist and the injustices in America that made her work essential. Through public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs of the fearless Mississippi sharecropper-turned-human-rights-activist, Fannie Lou Hamer's America explores and celebrates the lesser-known life of one of the Civil Rights Movement’s greatest leaders.

TRANSCRIPT

- I question America.

Is this America?

The land of the free and the home of the brave?

[Fannie Lou Hamer singing]

I know what it's like to be hungry.

I know what it's like to be without clothes.

I know what it's like to be without food.

- [Narrator] An icon of civil rights history

tells her own story in words and song.

- The cry of hunger is the cry of hunger

whether it's coming from Black, white, brown, or red.

And this what Black power mean.

We want to have something to say about our destiny.

And we've been down so long,

we ain't got no other way to go but up.

(audience cheers)

- [Narrator] Fannie Lou Hamer's America.

[Fannie Lou Hamer singing]
