Now, it's an odd way to start a show.

Alright, this is the first track off my album.

It's called "Trouble In Paradise."

And, uh, I originally wrote it, uh, with Anna Wintour in mind.

The great fashion...uh, figure.

And, um, and I've met her a couple of times in passing,

and we have many friends in common.

But I still don't know what her thoughts are concerning

this piece of music, or if she's even heard it.

So...

- You know, this idea came to us, basically,

because my entire tour was canceled. [laughs]

And, um--and we wanted to still do--have sort of

a live component connected to the release of the album.

So we decided to do a show in this beautiful home--

the Paramour.

- ♪

- RUFUS: I've known about this place for many, many years.

I first did a concert here--or I appeared in a benefit here,

I think, about 20 years ago.

- ♪

- RUFUS: And it always stuck with me as a fantastic place.

It belonged to a silent movie star--Mr. Moreno.

And his wife was an oil heiress.

I think she had the money, really.

And, sadly, she apparently died in a car accident,

and she drove off Mulholland Drive--or her chauffeur did,

I should say, after a party.

So, it has that kind of Old Hollywood haunted feel.

Um, you know, I've been a fan all my life of the Golden Era of

Hollywood whether--you know, from the silents up until,

you know, I guess the '60s.

So, all of this kind of, you know,

faded glamour and luxury is--I find very interesting

and very, very exciting.

So, uh--so, I felt this would be a great place to,

uh--to do a concert.

- RUFUS: Uh, we now live in Laurel Canyon,

and this is sort of my homage

to that sensibility

and, uh, all the greatness that came out of California in

the '60s and '70s, and their incredible songwriter--and the

incredible songwriting, so here we go.

It's called "Damsel In Distress."

Um, and, uh, the title comes from, uh,

something my daughter said one day--our daughter, I should say.

She--she walked into the living room and expressed

very emphatically that, uh,

"Daddy, I would like to unfollow the rules,"

and then walked out of the room, and I knew I had a lyric

that latter became a song.

And now is the title of my new album, so here we go.

- What I love about the glamor of Old Hollywood is that it was

completely...centered around the imagination, you know?

There was no kind of boundaries in terms of expressing

what--what people's fantasies were.

You know, all the estates were versions of fairytale stories

or--or kind of legends.

And, you know, this--this--the Paramour still maintains some of

that, you know, crazy dream

that--that Hollywood is

and what it represented and still does, you know for,

I think, people to this day.

You know, people still come here to--to, uh,

be in the movies and to really become, you know,

larger than life and eternal and--

and I, of course, did the same thing

many, many years ago--20 years ago

when I made my first records for DreamWorks Records.

And I was flown out here and, you know,

I lived in the Chateau Marmont, and I embarked on, you know,

this is very, um...kind of old-fashioned, uh,

trajectory of, you know, making it big in Hollywood.

So--so, I'm still here, you know,

trying to make it big in Hollywood.

But I think I'm big. [laughs]

I'm on top of the hill.

[chuckles]

This next song I wrote about being big in the music business

which, technically, is--you have to be big, uh,

in the middle of America to really be big

all over the world.

Uh, "Romantical Man," which is a song I wrote after taking a very

long walk across the city and discovering this great

statue--or actually, it's a grave of--of an actress

named Sarah Siddons,

who was sort of the Bette Davis of her era.

I think it was during the 18th century, uh,

the Gainsborough time.

And, um--and, yes, so it's sort of modern London viewed

through the broken down eyes of a grave statue. [laughs]

And, uh--and I will say that it's--it's

in Paddington Green.

And I later found out, uh, when I was hanging out

with Chrissie Hynde, um, that she

too is obsessed with this statue.

And, uh--and her nose had been knocked off a few years ago.

And now, um, it's, uh, been fixed.

So, very much thanks to her, so thank you, Chrissie.

- So the other thing that's interesting about this

arrangement, about this setup is that there's no harmonies on it.

I mean, my--my--the album itself is full of stacked vocals.

A lot of them are me singing, you know,

with myself in very complicated harmonies.

And my sister, Martha, sings on it as well,

as well as Petra Haden, certain friends.

But, um--but on this--in this kind of, um, ensemble,

there's just me singing.

So, it's me and the instrumentalists,

and that's--that, I don't think I've ever done before.

I've always had sort of backup singers or--or sung a lot

with my sister, for instance.

But, um--but so this was a different approach.

which I wrote for our daughter, Viva.

And, uh, about sort of when--I believe she was conceived,

which was in Italy, in Florence,

at the Conservatorio Musicale Cherubini,

um, in Maria Callas's dressing room.

So, believe me, it was very--well, yeah,

so that's the song about that.

- You know, when it came time to do the actual filming, um,

it also coincided with the--uh, the protests in the city of L.A.

and across the world, really.

Um, and, uh, so there's been a lot of turmoil surrounding,

um, us on top of this, you know, majestic hill.

And it's great to be out there active and really, you know,

working for justice.

But it's also nice to have a break. [laughs]

And to come up to this beautiful

reclusive place and make music.

And so it's been, um--it's been a really wonderful,

enriching way to, um--to just, uh, you know,

keep going through this interesting period

we seem to be living through.

- Whenever I write a song,

my intention is that it lasts forever.

And I'm kinda always--always, you know,

taking in the world around me and trying to translate it

into music, whether I like it or not.

And, uh, sadly, I mean, with America, and this song,

"Going To A Town," the truth is that, you know,

this country--which we love and which we wanna fight for,

in which we--who deserves, you know,

our attention and is a great idea, you know, on paper.

Uh, it is also an incredibly troubled place,

and there is this cycle of--of treachery

that kind of reveals itself every few years.

So the song "Going To A Town," which I wrote, uh,

many years ago during the Bush years,

when we went to war in Iraq,

uh, I basically, um...

uh, sing it today,

and people relate to it in terms of how it,

you know--in terms of what's going on today

politically and socially.
