- All righty.

I'm from a little town called Afton

in Nelson County, Virginia.

We don't even really go by the city,

'cause the county is the only place

that people kind of know.

I went all the way through school

thinking that I was gonna be

a physical therapist, maybe,

and it just didn't stick.

I couldn't kind of shake

the dream of doing music.

And when I saw how many people

were here and were doing it independently,

and really making the music

that they wanted to make,

I kind of, I don't know,

I just felt like I needed

to be a part of it.

So started planning.

I'd never been to Texas,

so I picked San Marcos just because

it seemed to be decently close

to a lot of different places (laughs),

so I just sort of picked it out

on a map, and convinced one of my best friends

to move with me as well,

and we just went out.

We spent about a year planning,

and then just went for it,

and it's been awesome ever since.

So this next one is one that I kind of wrote

about the things that you realize

as you get older,

the things that you think about

and kind of compare to what it used to be

when you were younger.

And this one's called Magic.

I just needed to meet

as many people as I could

in this kind of Texas music scene

and just try and branch myself out,

but I knew about the Blue Light

song writer competition,

because of Thomas Mooney's podcast.

(laughs) I used to listen to that,

well still do,

but I started listening to it

in the year before I moved

just 'cause I love hearing other artists

talk about anything from how they write songs

to how they got started

or just telling stories.

It's always been really interesting for me.

I don't really remember

how I came across that podcast initially.

Probably an artist that I followed

must have said something about it,

but that's how I found out

about the Blue Light,

and when I moved here

I think they just had announced

that they were opening submissions or something

and I just thought,

maybe it's crazy to go all the way up there,

but why not?

It's a good way to try and make some friends

in the music scene

and so yeah, so I just came

all the way up here,

and it worked out (laughs).

What is going on in Texas

as far as the scene

or just this kind of whole community

and almost like an infrastructure built

around Texas music,

certainly not a thing in Virginia,

not to say that there aren't

tons of amazing musicians

and plenty of local people

that I met during my time there,

but I honestly just didn't really

put as much time and focus

into music when I was in Virginia.

When I was in college,

I was mostly just playing to my bedroom wall.

I wasn't really actively pursuing it,

just 'cause it takes a lot of effort.

It takes a lot of work

to book yourself,

and to really get out there

and I was a struggling science major (laughs),

and so it was just not something

that I gave a lot of attention

during that time,

and so I think after I graduated college,

I just really just kind of knew

that I wanted to get down here,

so I did play that one year

I did play around Virginia,

so I don't know if I had stayed

in Virginia for say five years

actively trying to only do music,

it might be different.

I don't wanna say anything negatively

about that scene, necessarily,

but it's certainly not as concentrated

as it is here.

I mean, it's just,

I feel like almost everybody you meet here

knows somebody who plays,

or writes, or has been,

I mean it's just, it's everywhere,

and the people here, fans wise,

are incredibly supportive.

That's I think one of the things

that I've really noticed is that people

even these like short,

or these kind of sitting there

at a random restaurant or bar

or something like that

kind of gigs where in Virginia

it was usually a much smaller,

I feel like, crowd,

and a lot of times the people

that were coming out were my friends

and family which was awesome,

but here I mean people are,

I mean as far as like tips go

and everything I feel like people

are really, really generous

to local musicians, I don't know.

And I don't know if that's

necessarily a difference.

It's just something I've had

a lot more I guess success here

in a very short time

compared to my year in Virginia.
