Our October pick for Ballerina Book Club, hosted by American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Isabella Boylston, is Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Left Hand of Darkness.” The 1969 classic is one of the author’s most influential works, which also include her acclaimed Earthsea fantasy series and the 1974 novel “The Dispossessed.”
Set in the future on a world called Winter where gender is fluid, the science-fiction novel follows an ambassador who has come to the frigid planet on a quest to unite it with the Ekumen of Known Worlds.
We’re especially excited to share that we will be partnering with “American Masters” to read “The Left Hand of Darkness.” Throughout the month, we’ll be coming together to share features and clips about the author and her work.
In addition to reading “The Left Hand of Darkness,” we will also be streaming the 2019 “American Masters” documentary “Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin,” which will be available to watch through Oct. 31. Directed by Arwen Curry and produced with Le Guin’s participation over a decade, the film is an intimate journey through the writer’s worlds, both real and fantastic.
The extended festival version of “Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin” is available on Grasshopper Film’s website for download or on DVD. The DVD is subtitled in seven languages and includes three extra scenes and two additional special features. For a limited time, you can receive 25% off using the promotional code: americanmasters.
The co-presentation marks the first of many Ballerina Book Club and “American Masters” collaborations. Stay tuned in the coming months for special author spotlights and more.
