Our June pick for Ballerina Book Club, hosted by American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Isabella Boylston, is “The Chosen and the Beautiful” by Nghi Vo. A magical reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” the novel places Jordan Baker at its center as she navigates high society as a queer, Vietnamese American woman.
When we say a “magical reimagining,” we mean that literally. Taking cues from the book’s source material, the novel is set in the 1920s, but it’s more than the era’s glistening wealth that sets the pages aglow. Magical elements are woven throughout the text, shifting the Jazz Age world into fantasy.
The first chapter opens on a hot June day, with Daisy and our protagonist lounging in the heat at Daisy’s East Egg mansion. From there, familiar relationships found in “The Great Gatsby” are explored anew.
