Our November pick for Ballerina Book Club, hosted by American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Isabella Boylston, is Frances Cha’s “If I Had Your Face.” The book is the Brooklyn-based writer’s debut novel.
~ What It’s About ~
Cha’s novel chronicles the journeys of four young women who share ambition and an address in Seoul, South Korea. Backdropped by the bustling city, the book explores feminine ideals, plastic surgery, survival, debt, class, filial piety and the bonds that hold us.
~ Why We Chose It ~
“If I Had Your Face” has landed on our recommendation list in the past and has lingered on our minds as one of our favorite reads of the year. Captivated by the resiliency, friendship and humor underscoring the novel, we were swept into the vivid portrait painted by Cha with the fluidity of her writing, which moves with ease between the characters as they grapple with what society expects of them.
As described by Isabella:
“Her prose has a cinematic quality, and I almost felt like I was watching a movie unfold before my eyes. The sisterhood the four women forge as they work toward reaching their dreams in a sometimes hostile environment was deeply relatable, and I was fascinated by this feminist glimpse into modern-day Korean culture.”
