‘May we never forget’: Read a poem by E.C. Church
House of Abundance Poetry member E.C. Church.

House of Abundance Poetry’s four-year anniversary event fell in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In absence of the physical gathering of this mighty community, ALL ARTS partnered with House of Abundance Poetry (HOA) and introduced an ongoing series with a single-word prompt for each writer: quarantine.

HOA member E.C. Church was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and he grew up in LeFrak City, Queens.

He shared with ALL ARTS:

“Writing is something which soothes me and helps me tell my story and my experiences growing up in the inner city. With this experience, I’ve realized that I’ve never brought a poem to life which is shockingly true.

Never would I have imagined in a thousand years that I would pen a poem about a pandemic the world is facing, which has impacted us all in this manner. Being able to witness firsthand the scourge of the virus on the frontline being a health care provider brought me to tears, expressing myself and the realities of those who have lost someone.

In times like these, having community and being a part of the House of Abundance family has been a blessing and reward. I have been a part of HOA gatherings for a little under two years and there’s nothing like it! The founders and poets are world-class ladies, and the experience and warmth always leaves me going back for more.”

Here is his quarantine poem submission.

A poem by E.C. Church

As time pulls us further and further away from youth.
A reminder, which is unspoken
the power of wisdom and truth

To the mother’s we’ve once loved, the brothers who fought our battles, the sisters
in which we once relied upon
now just a memory forever gone
now in my memory you shall forever live on

The tears of our seldom cries
bitter is our reality, tragic how
it all turned into such a calamity
Why must my love one’s die

To my friends and coworkers,
the ones we have lost, a battle well fought, may we never forget those who stood the front lines giving their lives with no regrets selfless, they are truly the glory
the heroes of this story

May we never forget
The names and the faces
Of the nameless and faceless
Man woman and child
May we never forget
