Here are the New York Public Library’s most checked-out books of 2019

The New York Public Library released its annual list of the top checkouts for 2019, and it turns out that a lot of New Yorkers read Michelle Obama’s memoir, “Becoming,” this year.

The work, which debuted last year, found its way to the homes of the most readers system-wide, securing the number one spot in both the Bronx and Manhattan. Also of note, in Staten Island, seven of the slots went to James Patterson, though “A Spark of Light” by Jodi Picoult ranked highest for the borough.

To determine the list, data is culled from the library’s branches in Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx, taking into consideration both books and e-books for the system-wide list. The library will also release its top checkouts of all time in January to mark the system’s 125th anniversary.

“The top checkouts at the New York Public Library may seem like a simple opportunity to identify what New Yorkers enjoyed reading in 2019, but at the Library we see the diversity these titles represent,” said Lynn Lobash, the NYPL’s assistant director of readers services, in a statement. “Whether it’s literary fiction, memoirs, the latest mystery or thriller — readers of all ages from all walks of life can find the book they’re looking for at their local branch or online and this annual list is our tribute to them.”
