Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo broke genre boundaries with his debut recital album “ARC” by juxtaposing the Baroque music of Handel to that of contemporary composer Philip Glass — a thoughtful pairing that, on Friday, garnered the singer a 2019 Grammy nomination in the category of Classical Solo Vocal Album.
With the release of his album, Costanzo challenged audiences to see concerts and his music in a new and (literally) moving way. Costanzo staged an experiential performance — aptly titled “Glass Handel” — with live art, music, fashion, dance and visual media on display while audience members were carted through the show by so-called “people movers” at St. John the Divine.
